    Notes: The adsorption and dissociation of molecular water on the defective (001) surface of galena (PbS) have been investigated using both periodic and embedded cluster electronic structure methods. The results show that in the periodic calculations, the energies are particularly sensitive to the thickness of the simulated slab. The predicted activation and reaction energies from the different approaches are in good agreement given the different levels of theory used, and show that water will easily dissociate at a surface step site, with the product structure being the more stable in such an environment. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Recent experiments (Miller et al. 1987; Bell and Rossman 1992; Bai and Kohlstedt 1992) have shown that olivine, the dominant mineral in the Earth's upper mantle, can contain substantial amounts of water in the form of OH. There is uncertainty, however, as to the mechanisms by which water dissolves into the mineral structure and as to the site it occupies in the host lattice. We have therefore used atomistic computer simulation techniques based on the Born model of solids, to investigate the structures and energies of OH defects in olivine. Our calculations suggest that the most favourable route for incorporation of OH into olivine involves reactions with water accompanied by the reduction of ferric iron for which we obtain a solution energy of 0.46 eV. We propose therefore that the OH content will be largely controlled by the concentration of Fe3+.

    Notes: Abstract Oxygen exchange experiments have been performed between single crystals of sanidine feldspar and oxygen gas enriched in 18O, at temperatures in the range 869–1053 °C, total pressure 1 atmosphere, for times up to 28 days. Oxygen isotope diffusion profiles in a direction perpendicular to (001) were determined with an ion microprobe. The experimental data obey a single Arrhenius relationship of the form D = 8.4 × 10−11 exp. (−245 ± 15 kJ mol−1/RT) m2s−1. The results indicate that oxygen diffusion in anhydrous sanidine feldspar is marginally slower than oxygen diffusion in anhydrous anorthite. Comparison with published atomistic simulation studies suggests that oxygen transport in feldspar is by an interstitial mechanism.

    Notes: Abstract Computer simulation techniques are used to investigate the energetics and mechanisms of dissolution of water in the upper mantle mineral wadsleyite (β(Mg, Fe)2SiO4). We show how reactions involving the reduction of Fe3+ with water incorporated as hydroxyl groups are exothermic. Reactions with water leading to the formation of Mg vacancies are also favourable, having low energies. The results suggest that wadsleyite may accommodate high concentrations of protons.

    Notes: Abstract We have used computer simulation methods to model the structure and energetics of the hydrogarnet defect in grossular. The predicted structure is in good agreement with experimental data. The calculated energy for the reaction of water with grossular to form the hydrogarnet defect is 1.02 Ev (98 kJ mol-1). This low energy of reaction suggests that such defects will be common in garnets where they could play an important role in effecting processes such as atomic transport.

    Description: This book documents the unique reporting practices of humanitarian journalists – an influential group of journalists defying conventional approaches to covering humanitarian crises. Based on a 5-year study, involving over 150 in-depth interviews, this book examines the political, economic and social forces that sustain and influence humanitarian journalists. The authors argue that – by amplifying marginalised voices and providing critical, in-depth explanations of neglected crises – these journalists show us that another kind of humanitarian journalism is possible. However, the authors also reveal the heavy price these reporters pay for deviating from conventional journalistic norms. Their peripheral position at the ‘boundary zone’ between the journalistic and humanitarian fields means that a humanitarian journalist’s job is often precarious – with direct implications for their work, especially as ‘watchdogs’ for the aid sector. As a result, they urgently need more support if they are to continue to do this work and promote more effective and accountable humanitarian action. A rigorous study of how unique professional practices can be produced at the ‘boundary zone’ between fields, this book will interest students and scholars of journalism and communication studies, sociology and humanitarian studies. It will also appeal to those interested in studies of news and media work as occupational identities.

    Description: The use of integrated sustainability plans is an emerging trend in higher education institutions (HEIs) to set sustainability priorities and to create a work plan for action. This paper analyses the sustainability plans of 21 Canadian HEIs that have used the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System (STARS) from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). The plans were coded thematically with a focus on the sustainability goals, process of plan creation, and aspects of plan design outlined in the texts. This paper finds that sustainability goals focused on the environmental aspects of sustainability, while social and economic aspects were less emphasized. Further, most plans were described as being created through a broad stakeholder-consultation process, while fewer plans assigned timelines and parties responsible to sustainability goals. This paper contributes to our understanding of the priorities of Canadian HEI institutions at the end of the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development and is useful for practitioners interested in developing their own sustainability plans.

    Description: If change for sustainability in higher education is to be effective, change efforts must be sensitive to the institutional culture in which they will be applied. Therefore, gaining insight into how institutional stakeholders engage with the concept of sustainable universities is an important first step in understanding how to frame and communicate change. This study employed Q methodology to explore how a group of professors conceptualize sustainable universities. We developed a Q sample of 46 statements comprising common conceptions of sustainable universities and had 26 professors from Dalhousie University rank-order them over a quasi-normal distribution. Our analysis uncovered four statistically significant viewpoints amongst the participants: ranging from technocentric optimists who stress the importance of imbuing students with skills and values to more liberal arts minded faculty suspicious of the potential of sustainability to instrumentalize the university. An examination of how these viewpoints interact on a subjective level revealed a rotating series of alignments and antagonisms in relation to themes traditionally associated with sustainable universities and broader themes associated with the identity of the university in contemporary society. Finally, we conclude by discussing the potential implications that the nature of these alignments and antagonisms may hold for developing a culturally sensitive vision of a sustainable university.
