    Description: The photochemistry of dimethylsulfide (DMS) was examined in the Southern Ocean to assess its impact on the biogeochemical dynamics of DMS in Antarctic waters. Very high DMS photolysis rate constants (0.16–0.23 h−1) were observed in surface waters exposed to full sunlight. DMS photolysis rates increased linearly with added nitrate concentrations, and 35% of the DMS loss in unamended samples was attributed to the photochemistry of ambient nitrate (29 μM). Experiments with optical filters showed that the UV-A band of sunlight (320–400 nm) accounted for ~65% of DMS photolysis suggesting that dissolved organic matter was the main photosensitizer for DMS photolysis. During the austral spring, DMS photolysis was the dominant loss mechanism under non-bloom and non-ice cover conditions owing to the high doses and deep penetration of UV radiation in the water column, low observed microbial consumption rates, and high in situ nitrate concentrations.

    Notes: : Nutrient contents of canopy throughfall precipitation (TFP) from fertilized and unfertilized crops were analyzed and compared to determine the importance of fertilization on this source of nutrients in runoff. Continuous barley, corn, oats, rye, and wheat plots, that had been unfertilized since 1941 and divided and half fertilized since 1959, were studied. TFP soluble PO4, total PO4, and soluble K amounts were usually larger from fertilized plots in comparison to unfertilized ones but the differences usually were not significant. NH4-N and NO3-N may have been adsorbed from precipitation by corn canopies.

    Notes: A tubular hyperfiltration membrane system was studied with tomato juice in a recirculation mode. Two aromatic polyamide thin film composite membranes (ZF 99) (1.3 m2) were examined. After 52 hr of operation with tomato juice one membrane exhibited a flux of 39.7 Lm−2hr−1 (72°C, 55.2 bar). Another membrane, after 717 hr, gave a flux of 41 Lm−2hr−1 (78°C, 41.4 bar) and natural tomato soluble solids (NTSS) rejection of 94 to 〉98%.

    Notes: Microspectrophotometry (MSP) revealed the presence of a rod and at least two cone classes (mid- and long-wavelength sensitive) in the intertidal peacock blenny Salaria pavo. Both rhodopsin and porphyropsin based visual pigments were found in all fish, together with high individual variation in the chromophore ratio. The three morphs (females, males and sneaker males) differed in their spectral sensitivities (as measured with the optomotor response) with sneakers having higher sensitivity at long-wavelengths than either males or females. This long-wave displacement of peak sensitivity could be due to elevated proportions of porphyropsin visual pigments in the sneakers’ retinae. The lenses of all morphs exhibited a short-wavelength cut-off and an unusual layer of carotenoid was found behind the retinal pigment epithelium and in the outer segments of some cones. These screening pigments could serve a photo-protective role or to improve visual contrast. No short-wave photoreceptors were located using MSP. This indicates that this cone class may be absent or present at very low numbers in the retina. This is the first in depth study of the visual system of a blenniid fish and indicates potential within-species visual variation that may be related to the species’ habitat and morph-specific behavioural requirements.

    Notes: Studies were conducted during 1991–1993 on environmental factors affecting the upstream migration of eels in the Rivers Severn and Avon, England. Migrants (〉 156 000 pigmented elvers and 〉 189 000 juveniles) were trapped as they attempted to ascend weir or sluice barriers. Multiple regression models were developed to compare catches per trap per night (C) with data for various key environmental parameters at seven sites, from the tidal limit to a maximum of 42.5 km upstream. The key stimulus for migration of both elvers and juveniles at the tidal limit was water temperature, with some weaker monthly influences related to seasonal temperature increases. Smaller annual influences probably related to earlier glass eel recruitment into the lower estuary. A weak early tidal effect was demonstrated only once, in 1993 in the Severn. Temperature also exerted significant effects on C of juvenile eels at the tidal limit and in the non-tidal rivers, although effects weakened with distance upstream. Year, month, river flows and whether traps were mounted on weirs or sluices made only small contributions at a few sites. Distance between traps also contributed to combined data for upper Severn sites. The threshold temperature in all cases was 14–16°C, with low to zero catches below 10–11°C, catch maxima being achieved above 18–20°C. The implications of strong temperature-dependence of migration in relation to stock recruitment and management are discussed. Special reference is made to recent decreases in recruitment of eels to Europe and N. America and possible long-term effects of global warming.

    Notes: A stepwise multiple regression was used to evaluate the relative importance of antecedent-, event-, and high-intensity-precipitation amounts; runoff volume; and precipitation nutrient contents and concentrations in determining nutrient losses in runoff. Plots were fertilized at high, medium, and low rates and had cultivation ridges oriented up-and-down slope or on the contour. Runoff volume was the important factor in determining the loss of NO3, soluble PO4, total PO4, and soluble K ions in runoff from fallow, corn, or soybean plots. NH4-N loss was controlled mainly by the precipitation content and antecedet precipitation since fertilizer had been applied. Nutrient losses were greater from plots fertilized at the high rate and from plots with cultivation ridges oriented up-and-down slope rather than on the contour.

    Notes: A two-stage tubular hyperfiltration (reverse osmosis) pilot plant equipped with 15.6 m2 of aromatic polyamide thin film composite membrance (ZF 99) was studied with tomato juice (4–6% natural tomato soluble solids [NTSS]). It was operated over 100 hr in recirculation and single pass modes. The single pass mode was operated at33–38 bar (feed inlet pressure) and 70–93°C for 18.2 hr. Stage 1 flux was 48 to 34 Lm−2hr−1. Stage 2 flux was 30 to 20 Lm−2hr−1. Concentration went to 7.4–9.0% NTSS at 8.6 L/min, and to 6.3–6.4% NTSS at 18.6 L/min. NTSS rejection was 〉98%. Of permeate samples tested none showed detectable levels of sugars; only 25% showed detectable levels of organic acids.

    Notes: Summary Genomic clones ofDrosophila andTetrahymena histone H2A variants were isolated using the corresponding cDNA clones, (van Daal et al. 1988; White et al. 1988). The site corresponding to the initiation of transcription was defined by primer extension for bothDrosophila andTetrahymena genomic sequences. The sequences of the genomic clones revealed the presence of introns in each of the genes. TheDrosophila gene has three introns: one immediately following the initiation codon, one between amino acids 26 and 27 (gln and phe), and one between amino acids 64 and 65 (glu and val). TheTetrahymena gene has two introns, the positions of which are identical to the first two introns of theDrosophila gene. The chicken H2A.F variant gene has been recently sequenced and it contains four introns (Dalton et al. 1989). The first three of these are in the same positions as the introns in theDrosophila gene. The fourth intron interrupts amino acid 108 (gly). In all cases the sizes and the sequences of the introns are divergent. However, the fact that they are in conserved positions suggests that at least two of the introns were present in the ancestral gene. A phylogenetic tree constructed from the sequences of the variant and major cell cycle-regulated histone H2A proteins from several species indicates that the H2A variant proteins are evolutionarily separate and distinct from the major cell cycle-regulated histone H2A proteins. The ancestral H2A gene must have duplicated and diverged before fungi and ciliates diverged from the rest of the eukaryote lineage. In addition, it appears that the variant histone H2A proteins analyzed here are more conserved than the major histone H2A proteins.
