Notes: Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) and photofragmentation data for (KI)−n, K(KI)−n , and K2(KI)−n (n up to 13) are presented. The excess electrons in these clusters are all loosely bound with vertical detachment energies below 1.6 eV, and the photofragmentation data correlated well with the UPS results. Our results for the stoichiometric clusters are in good agreement with theoretical predictions, and the ground state geometry of these clusters are discussed. For the excess potassium cluster series, we suggest the possible existence of electron spin pairs in some of these cluster anions.

Notes: We have performed outgoing resonant Raman scattering and photoluminescence measurements on as-grown, Be- and C-implanted GaN in the temperature range of 77–330 K. In implanted GaN after postimplantation annealing at 1100 °C, the A1(LO) multiphonons up to the seventh order were observed with the very strong four longitudinal optical (LO) and five LO modes at ∼2955 and ∼3690 cm−1, respectively, showing extraordinary resonance behavior. With the sample temperature, these two modes significantly decreased and increased in intensity, respectively. The phenomenon is attributed to the variation of resonant conditions due to the shift of the band gap energy. Meanwhile, the combination of E2(high) and quasi-LO phonons was strongly enhanced by quasi-LO phonon involvement and thus the corresponding overtones can be clearly observed even up to the sixth order (m=6). The mechanisms that such strong outgoing multiphonon resonance Raman scattering occurred to implanted GaN instead of high-quality as-grown GaN samples can be attributed to the strong Frohlich-induced scattering by LO phonons and exciton-mediated resonant Raman scattering with impurity inducement. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In this paper, we introduce the notion of interval structures in an attempt to establish a unified framework for representing uncertain information. Two views are suggested for the interpretation of an interval structure. A typical example using the compatibility view is the rough set model in which the lower and upper approximations form an interval structure. Incidence calculus adopts the allocation view in which an interval structure is defined by the tightest lower and upper incidence bounds. The relationship between interval structures and interval-based numeric belief and plausibility functions is also examined. As an application of the proposed model, an algorithm is developed for computing the tightest incidence bounds.

Notes: Rapid thermal processing with a controlled cooling ramp as a postoxidation annealing in nitrogen is of considerable influence on the quality of thin (6 nm) thermal oxides. We studied how the annealing condition affected the electrical characteristics of the dielectrics, the charge-trapping properties, the gate voltage shift ΔVG, the flat band voltage shift ΔVFB, the increase of midgap interface state density ΔDitm under high field stress, the charge to breakdown, and the breakdown field. We found that controlled cooling after oxidation improved the interface between silicon and silicon dioxide. The postoxidation annealing in nitrogen reduced the fixed charge in oxides. The above measurements were correlated.

Notes: The 584 A(ring) photoelectron spectra of rotationally cold C2H2 and C2D2 were obtained with improved resolution, permitting the first three electronic states of the ions to be characterized in greater detail. Temperature-dependent studies led to a definitive assignment of the low intensity features in the X˜ 2∏u state, yielding ν4=837±12 cm−1 for C2H+2 and ν4=702±12 cm−1 for C2D+2. The ν5 origin of the Renner–Teller multiplet was identified. In the case of C2D+2, a Fermi resonance with this multiplet contributed intensity to the ν1 mode, facilitating its evaluation at 2572±16 cm−1. The C2h geometry of the A˜ 2Ag state was determined from the two previously unobserved bending progressions, assigned to ν4 and ν5B, and evaluated at 492±12 and 605±12 cm−1 for C2H+2 and 339±12 and 516±12 cm−1 for C2D+2, respectively. A more extensive vibrational progression than previously evident, comprised of irregular spectral features indicative of nonadiabatic effects, was observed for the B 2∑+u state. Autocorrelation functions were derived from the spectra for all three electronic states, and the two electronically excited states exhibit an ultrafast decay on a 10−14 s time scale. The A˜ 2Ag state decays within one period of bending vibration, while the B˜ 2∑+u state survives only 14 fs, corresponding to a single period of symmetric stretching motion.

Notes: The 584 A(ring) photoelectron spectra of supersonic molecular beams of H2O and D2O have been obtained with improved resolution. The spectroscopic constants of the X˜ 2B1 and A˜ 2A1 state ions, including ω01, x011, ω02, x022, and x012, are reported. For the first two electronic states of the ion, precise line splittings were evaluated with a least squares fitting procedure, employing sums of empirical instrument response functions and a linear background. A simulation of the vibrational manifolds of the B˜ 2B2 state ions with combination progressions in the symmetry-allowed modes ν1 and ν2 failed to reproduce the diffuse photoelectron bands observed for both H2O and D2O. Autocorrelation functions were calculated from the photoelectron bands of all three electronic states. The B˜ 2B2 state correlation functions exhibit ultrafast decay, occurring on a 10−14 s time scale. The ν2 motion appears to define the decay in the correlation function. This behavior supports a previously proposed B˜ 2B2–A˜ 2A1 curve-crossing model for the nonradiative relaxation of the B˜ 2B2 state ions.
