    Notes: Charged particle production in thermal-energy K(nd)–CS2 collisions is investigated for intermediate values of n. The data show that collisions result in the formation of relatively long-lived CS−2 ions and of free electrons. A fraction of the CS−2 ions is observed to undergo rapid electric-field-induced detachment in fields of only a few kilovolts per centimeter and this novel phenomenon is discussed.

    Notes: Translational energy release in dissociative electron attachment to C2Cl4, CCl4 , CFCl3, and 1,1,1-C2Cl3F3 has been investigated at subthermal electron energies through studies of collisions involving K(nd) Rydberg atoms. For CCl4 and CFCl3 , the observed mean translational energy release is in good agreement with the predictions of quasiequilibrium theories of unimolecular decay, suggesting that the excess energy of reaction is well-distributed among the internal modes of the intermediate negative ion prior to dissociation. In contrast, the data for 1,1,1-C2Cl3F3 indicate rapid dissociation before effective redistribution of the excess energy can occur. Implications of this as regards measurement of free-electron attachment cross sections at very-low energies are discussed.

    Notes: Photodetachment cross sections for WO−3 have been measured near the detachment threshold (3.0–3.7 eV). A fast beam of WO−3 is merged with a coaxial cw laser beam and the photodetached electrons are detected with a magnetic confinement slow electron collector. The photodetachment spectrum yields an electron affinity for WO3 of 3.33+0.08−0.15 eV, somewhat lower than values obtained in thermodynamic equilibrium measurements. In addition, a lower limit of 3.7 eV is obtained for the electron affinity of HWO4.

    Notes: Negative ion production via electron transfer in collisions between K(nd) Rydberg atoms and CF3Br and CF2Br2 has been investigated over a wide range of of n (10≤n≤70). For both species, the major negative ion observed is Br−, although with CF2Br2, a small Br−2 signal is also detected. Kinematic studies show that Br− production via dissociative attachment is accompanied by sizable translational energy release (∼0.35 eV for CF3Br; ∼0.2 eV for CF2Br2). These studies further show that, despite this large energy release, post-attachment interactions between the product ions are important at intermediate values of n(n(approximately-less-than)20) and suggest that the transient CF3Br−@B| and CF2Br2−* ions initially formed by electron capture have quite different lifetimes against dissociation. Cross sections for free-electron attachment to both species are derived from measurements of rate constants for electron transfer at high n. These cross sections are in reasonable agreement with results obtained in free-electron studies using the threshold photoelectron spectroscopy technique.

    Notes: A kinematic study of the velocities and angular distribution of I− ions detected following Rydberg electron transfer in K(nd)/CF3I collisions is reported. The data show that post-attachment interactions between the product ions are important at intermediate n (9(approximately-less-than)n(approximately-less-than)20) even though the I− ions are formed with appreciable kinetic energies.

    Notes: Predissociation in several singlet valence and Rydberg states of molecular nitrogen has been investigated using photofragment spectroscopy. We report here measurements of the yields of the atomic fragment products N(4S0), N(2D0), and N(2P0) from predissociation of specific rotational levels in the b' 1Σu+ (v=9–13), c' 1Σu+ (v=3,4), c 1Πu (v=3,4), and o 1Πu (v=3) states of N2. These states are prepared by laser excitation from the metastable a‘ 1Σg+ (v=0) level in a fast (3 keV) molecular beam. Correlated atomic fragments from single molecular dissociation events are monitored using a position- and time-sensitive detector to obtain a complete and sensitive scheme for all possible N2 dissociation products. Dissociation of the N2 states is found to occur to N(2D0)+N(4S0), and N(2P0)+N(4S0) products; production of N(4S0)+N(4S0) is found not to occur from any of the states investigated here. Branching of the dissociation products between the two active limits is found to be strongly correlated with the energy of the predissociating level: levels lying 〈112 200 cm−1 above N2 X 1Σg+ (v=0) predissociate primarily to the N(2D0)+N(4S0) limit, while states above this energy primarily predissociate to N(2P0)+N(4S0). This behavior is discussed in terms of the potential energy structure of the triplet states of nitrogen that lead to predissociation.

    Notes: We have investigated electron transfer to O4+ in reactions with O2, NO, and Cs. We observe formation of O4 molecules that decay by predissociation and by direct dissociation. The kinetic energy release in dissociation as well as the nature of the dissociation products are determined. Evidence for three short-lived electronic states of tetraoxygen at energies near 2 eV above O2+O2 is obtained in electron transfer from O2 and NO. In the experiment with cesium we find evidence for longer-lived electronic states (10−13≤τ≤10−7 s) at 9.4 and 10.5 eV. The energy release and symmetry of the dissociation pattern suggests that the high lying states are symmetric molecular configurations at extended bond lengths (∼2.4 A(ring)).

    Notes: The nascent rovibrational population of O2+ produced from the reaction of near-thermal O+(4S)+CO2 is measured by observing the translational energy spectrum of its dissociative charge transfer products following neutralization in Cs vapor at keV energies. It is found that of the 1.19 eV exothermicity in the formation reaction, the product O2+ is formed on the average with 0.48 eV of internal energy partitioned nearly equally between vibrational excitation (0.27±0.03 eV) and rotational excitation (0.22±0.03 eV). Populations measured for O2+(v=0−5) are: 0.38, 0.30, 0.18, 0.09, 0.05, 0.01, respectively. The O2+ rotational temperature decreases with increasing vibrational excitation, from Trot=3100 K in v=0 to Trot=450 K in v=5. The present populations show some disagreement with recent flow tube measurements. Details of the technique and a determination of the O2+ rovibrational population following electron-impact ionization of O2 are also presented. The O+(4S)+CO2 reaction and its products are important in the ionospheres of Mars and Venus and in CO2 releases in the Earth's ionosphere.
