Abstract 2905 Introduction: Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are a group of malignant bone marrow stem cell disorders characterized by a predisposition for transformation to acute myelogeneous leukemia (AML). MDS disorders are heterogeneous in their morphology, cytogenetics, survival time, and ability to transform to AML. Although numerous classification schemes have been developed to provide a reproducible method for estimating patient survival and risk of leukemic evolution, research continues to identify factors that affect prognosis and survival time (e.g., treatment type, WHO FAB subgroups, karyotype, and transfusion status) and refine existing classification schemes.
