Description / Table of Contents: Abstract An applicable interpretation of fabrics should be based mainly on geometrical considerations in order to cover available field data. Therefore a theory on the formation of foldtype fabrics including congruent and concentric flexural-slip folds as well as kink bands in materials subjected to rhombic and different monocline strain types is derived by means of particle motion fields for homogeneous and isotropic bodies. The analysis of experimental results and their comparison with field observations largely confirms the theory and contributes to its improvement. Some trends can be established: With increasing monocline character of the strain type, the probability of concentric and congruent flexural-slip folding is reduced. It is substituted by kink band formation. While the portion of monocline strain is enlarged with depth, rhombic fold symmetry indicates, in the realm of elastic-plastic behaviour, the proximity of the surface of the earth or of a detachment surface. With gradual increase of the rock anisotropy, the development of shear faults, kink folds and, finally, congruent and concentric flexural-slip folds is favoured.

Notes: Abstract  For the modelling of Hot Dry Rock systems the interactions between macrofractures, prominent microcrack sets and the in situ stress field is of fundamental importance. In this study complete 3D analyses of microcrack orientations were carried out on granitoid samples from the Soultz geothermal borehole (EPS-1). The crack population is dominated by healed cracks in quartz forming three orthogonal sets (I, II, III) with strong preferred orientation, which probably result from superposition of internal thermal stresses during cooling and external tectonic stresses. The inferred orientation of paleo-σH is NE–SW. Based on the microthermometry of secondary fluid inclusions it can be assumed that cyclic crack/healing events occurred at P/T conditions roughly ranging between 1 and 2 kbar and 200–400 °C. A younger generation of open cracks in quartz which coincide with macroscopic fractures can be correlated with the Tertiary N–S direction of σH. The distribution of P-wave velocities (Vp) was measured by using the pulse transmission technique in 132 propagation directions at confining pressures up to 200 MPa. These Vp data and their variation with confining pressure are a suitable tool for detecting prominent crack patterns and to estimate the crack-controlled in situ properties. The observed bulk Vp anisotropy roughly reflects the composite microcrack fabric and the relative importance of individual sets. It can be assumed that the prominent crack sets represent planes of weakness and hence may cause a mechanically anisotropic behaviour dependent on their orientation with respect to the recent in situ stresses.

Notes: Abstract  Microfabrics and textures indicate that progressive mylonitization of granitoids from the vicinity of the KTB site occurred under high temperature and probably prograde conditions by pure shear deformation. Diffusion-controlled deformation mechanisms and diffusional mass transfer for all rock-forming minerals were prominent processes which also contributed to the development of compositional layering. Typical chessboard patterns in quartz suggest that even the latest increments of plastic deformation took place at high temperatures within the stability field of high quartz. Largely constant chemical bulk-rock compositions and lack of retrogressive reactions are evidence of a dry and closed system during mylonitization. Only a late post-mylonitic fluid influx is documented by secondary fluid inclusions along healed microcracks. Taking recent geochronological data into account, different geological scenarios are most suitable: (a) intrusion of the protolith between 525 and 475 Ma into Cadomian basement and subsequent mylonitization in a related extensional regime; and (b) Early Variscan mylonitization in a subduction zone environment between 475 and 380 Ma.

Description: The Ivrea Zone (southern Alps) is one of the key regions interpreted as exposing a section of the lower continental crust and was the subject of several review-type articles. The Ivrea-Verbano Zone was rotated into an upright position along the Insubric mylonite belt. In the southeast, this unit is in contact with the Strona Ceneri Zone, which is interpreted as upper continental crust crossing the Permian Cossato-Mergozzo-Brissagio Line (CMB Line). The CMB mylonites are locally overprinted by the mylonites and cataclasites of the Pogallo Line, which was active during the Jurassic. In addition, the sinistral, steeply inclined Rosarolo shear zone was active over a long time span from the ductile into the brittle field, i.e. from the Early Permian (high-temperature ultra-mylonites) to the Neo-Alpine basic dykes and pseudotachylites. The high-temperature mylonites accommodated crustal extension and may be related to normal faults generated by magmatic underplating. The reactivation at different crustal levels during exhumation and tilting is documented by strain increments at decreasing P/T conditions. Its present subvertical orientation was attained during the Neo-Alpine deformation. Constraints on its exhumation history are based on new 40Ar/39Ar hornblende ages, K-Ar biotite ages and zircon fission-track data along the NE-SW trending Valstrona section. A re-interpretation of existing U-Pb monazite ages is included, based on a higher closure temperature for monazite. The oldest monazite ages are observed in proximity to the Pogallo Line (c. 292 Ma). Heat input by mafic intrusions was sufficient to reset the U-Pb monazite system, as is evidenced by the youngest ages in the vicinity of the Insubric Line. The re-interpretation favours the hypothesis that the oldest monazite ages are the result of complete resetting by a Permian thermal event. The 40Ar/39Ar hornblende ages and K-Ar biotite ages document the cooling after Permian heating. Roughly parallel age progressions decrease from the Pogallo Line (hornblende: 271 Ma vs. biotite: 227 Ma) towards the Insubric Line (hornblende: 201 Ma vs. biotite: 156 Ma). Zircon fission-track ages run parallel to the biotite ages in the upper part of the profile, whereas towards the Insubric Line a significant deviation from the biotite age progression is attributed to tilting of the basement during the Oligocene. Zircon fission-track ages around 38 Ma are found close to the Insubric Line. No age offset, neither at the CMB nor at the Pogallo Line, is observed. This confirms the hypothesis that the Pogallo Line is an oblique normal fault, and that the CMB Line has accommodated only minor vertical displacement. The capture of the different cooling ages confirms the tilting of the Ivrea-Verbano Zone during the Neo-Alpine deformation and contradicts the tilting of the Ivrea-Verbano Zone during the Permian.

Description: In recent years, the electromagnetic radiation (EMR) method has been used to detect faults and to determine main horizontal stress directions from variations in intensities and directional properties of electromagnetic emissions, which are assumed to be generated during micro-cracking. Based on a large data set taken from an area of about 250 000 km2 in Northern Germany, Denmark, and southern Sweden with repeated measurements at one location during a time span of about 1.5 yr, the method was systematically tested. Reproducible observations of temporary changes in the signal patterns, as well as a strongly concentric spatial pattern of the main directions of the magnetic component of the EMR point to very low frequency (VLF) transmitters as the main source and hence raise serious concerns about the applicability of the method to determine recent crustal stresses. We conclude that the EMR method, at its current stage of development, does not allow determination of the main horizontal stress directions.
