Notes: 1H NMR line shapes of hydrogen adsorbed on silica-supported ruthenium at pressures of 10−6–10 Torr were studied by using selective excitation via DANTE sequences. A transition from inhomogeneous to homogeneous line broadening was observed at hydrogen coverage of ∼0.5. The spectra were simulated by using generalized Bloch equations that included N-site exchange processes. The homogeneous line shape originates from increased hydrogen mobility, whereas proton–proton dipolar couplings are negligibly small. A rate parameter k obtained from this model quantifies the average mobility of hydrogen in the exchange process. This parameter increases by more than three orders of magnitude when the hydrogen coverage changes from 0.4 to 0.8. The simulations of line shapes obtained at variable temperatures showed that k exhibits Arrhenius behavior with an activation energy of 52 (±5) kJ/mol and preexponential factor k0=4×1010 s−1. It is implied that the motion of hydrogen must involve desorption, interparticle diffusion, and readsorption.

Notes: Abstract A study of inertial scale gravity wave motions in the region of the atmosphere between 30 and 60 km has been undertaken, using wind and temperature data derived from rocket-borne falling sphere density experiments performed over Woomera, Australia between 1962 nad 1976. The gross features of the wave field compare favorably with those found in similar northern hemispheric studies. Wave propagation is found to be both vertically and horizontally anisotropic. A rotary spectral analysis indicates predominately upgoing wave energy, suggesting that the majority of sources of these waves lie below 30 km. A detailed statistical investigation of the waves, made using the Stokes parameters technique, reveals that phase progression is also highly directional in the horizontal, with a significant zonal component in summer, but with a strong meridional component in winter. Propagation towards the southeast is inferred in summer, with the waves possibly emanating from tropospheric sources in equatorial regions to the north of Australia. The technique also shows that, on average, the waves appear to have mean ellipse eccentricities (=f/ω) around 0.4–0.45. Indirect estimates of a number of important wave parameters are made. In particular,v′ andw′ flux estimates are made over several height intervals. The vertical gradient of density weighted flux implies wave-induced mean flow accelerations of the order 0.1–1 ms−1day−1. This suggests that dissipating gravity waves are a significant source of the momentum residuals that are encountered in studies of satellite data from this region.

Notes: Abstract The quantitative study of the Brønsted acidity of niobic acid (Nb2O5·xH2O) using broad-line1H NMR at 4 K has been performed by interacting niobic acid, pretreated at 573 K under vacuum, with water molecules. The number of oxyprotonated species (H3O+ and H2O...HO species formed, unreacted acidic OH groups or excess H2O molecules) deduced from the simulations of the broad-line1H NMR spectra shows a continuous increase in the number of H3O+ species with adsorbed water molecules. This increase may be due to a classical dilution effect or to a synergistic interaction between Brønsted and Lewis acid sites. These results are compared with those of some HY zeolites with or without framework defects.

Notes: Abstract 1H broad-line (4 K) and MAS (room temperature) NMR have been used to study the acid strength of two amorphous silica–aluminas interacting or not with adsorbed water. The study is more difficult than for zeolites, because the acidic SiO(H)Al bridges are reversibly destroyed by dehydration. However, an acidity coefficient value (H3O+ concentration per Brønsted acid site when one water molecule interacts with each Brønsted site) of 0.34±10%; has been determined. This value is equal to that obtained for H-faujasite and H-mordenite samples with Si/Al ratios high enough for maximum acid strength.

Description: ABSTRACT Earthworm calcite granules (ECG) are secreted by several earthworm species, mostly Lumbricus terrestris and Lumbricus rubellus , which release them at the surface and in the upper part of soil horizons. For a long time, they have been found in various calcareous Quaternary deposits, but more recently in Western European loess sequences where they can be abundant in specific layers. In this study, we present the first continuous record of ECG abundance variations from two loess sequences in northern France dating from the last glacial period. The aim of this research is to evaluate the reliability of ECG as a new palaeoenvironmental proxy for the study of loess environments. ECG counts reveal a link between their abundance and the nature of stratigraphic units, i.e. very high abundances in tundra gley and boreal brown soil horizons and almost none in typical calcareous loess. These abundance variations are similar to those of terrestrial molluscs. The ECG signal thus suggests, along with sedimentological parameters (grain size index, calcium carbonate, total organic carbon), that milder climatic conditions occurred during the development of tundra gleys during the Upper Pleniglacial (∼20–35 ka), and of boreal brown soils during the Middle Pleniglacial (∼35–40 ka).
