Notes: Both metal-insulator-semiconductor and p-n junction electroluminescence have been observed in thin-film, metalorganic chemical vapor deposition-grown GaN diodes thermally annealed in N2. UV radiation, peaking near 380 nm, is emitted when electrons are injected from the undoped, n-type material into the Mg-doped, p-type GaN. Violet light, peaking near 430 nm, is obtained by injecting electrons into p-type material from either n-type material or non-ohmic metal contacts. The present results support and extend earlier interpretations of the nature of the recombination centers in GaN.

Notes: Purpose - To examine the post 9/11 communication of the bond-trading firm, Cantor Fitzgerald and its CEO Howard Lutnick, according to the discourse of renewal framework. Design/methodology/approach - This case-study of the discourse of renewal draws upon the messages and statements made by the company and its employees following the 9/11 attacks. The discourse of renewal framework emphasizes provisional responses, prospective statements, and the role of the leader as a symbol of stability in the face of a crisis. Findings - This study provides support for viewing crisis as change-inducing events with the potential to fundamentally alter the form, structure and direction of an organization. Renewal discourse helped the company survive an attack where over 600 employees were killed and the company offices completely destroyed. While a crisis inevitably create severe harm, it also has the potential to serve as a renewing force for the organization. Research limitations/implications - Few examples of post-crisis discourse of renewal have been examined in the literature and more research is needed. Work needs to identify the conditions necessary for this kind of discourse. Practical implications - Organizations may have the opportunity to fundamentally reframe a crisis, focusing on the opportunities that arise from these events. Originality/value - This paper explores both organizational crisis and organizational discourse from unique positions. Discourse is positioned as the means whereby crisis can become a positive force for change

Notes: Abstract The complexity of crisis situations allows for corporate responses to create multiple interpretations for organizational stakeholders concerning crisis evidence, the organization's intentions, and the locus of responsibility. Hence, organizations have the ability to emphasize an interpretation where the organization is viewed most favorably. Using Jack in the Box as a case study, we apply stakeholder theory to ascertain the ethical implications of employing strategic ambiguity in organizational crisis communication. We conclude that the crisis response provided by Jack in the Box's leaders was ethically questionable in the areas of evidence, intent, and locus because the ambiguity they introduced privileged their financial stakeholders over others. Ultimately, this strategic use of ambiguity diminished the deliberative ability of Jack in the Box's publics.

Notes: The thermal stability of glucose oxidase in solution was studied as a function of time and temperature between 37-60°C. As expected, the rate of thermal inactivation increased with temperature and at 60°C more than 80% of the enzyme's activity was lost after 0.5 hr incubation. Similar stability measurements on enzyme solutions containing water soluble synthetic polymers showed that several of the polymers significantly enhanced the thermal stability of glucose oxidase. Copolymers of vinyl acetate with either vinyl pyrrolidone or vinyl alcohol were found to be particularly effective. The molecular weight of the added polymers was found to be unimportant in the stabilization process but both polymer concentration and compositions were shown to be critical parameters.

Notes: Poly(methyl α-chloroacrylate) (PMCA) and the copolymers of methyl methacrylate and methyl α-chloroacrylate (poly(MMA-co-MCA)) have been reported recently to be more susceptible to radiation degradation than poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). In this paper we report our studies of PMCA and poly(MMA-co-MCA) as electron-sensitive positive resists. It has been found that both PMCA and the copolymers are more sensitive than PMMA. Using mixtures of dimethylformamide and 2-propanol as developers, the sensitivities of PMCA and poly(MMA-co-MCA) (38 mole percent MCA) have been found to be 1 × 10-5 and 6 × 10-6 coulomb/cm2, respectively. It has also been found that crosslinking predominates in PMCA when the electron dose exceeds 6 × 10-4 coulomb/cm2.
