Notes: We have developed a high-speed method to compress the two-dimensional angular distribution of space particles gathered by space plasma instrumentation into the pitch angle distribution, where the pitch angle is polar angle with respect to the ambient magnetic field. The pitch angle sorter can handle rates of up to 2 MHz and it is designed to accommodate high angular resolution plasma analyzers that are placed on a rotating spacecraft. This compression is achieved by relying on digitally encoded lookup tables to eliminate all arithmetic operations while applying the high symmetry of this compression to reduce the amount of digital memory.

Notes: Abstract We present the first electron time-of-flight measurements obtained with the Electron Drift Instrument (EDI) on Equator-S. These measurements are made possible by amplitude-modulation and coding of the emitted electron beams and correlation with the signal from the returning electrons. The purpose of the time-of-flight measurements is twofold. First, they provide the drift velocity, and thus the electric field, when the distance the electrons drift in a gyro period becomes sufficiently large. Second, they provide the gyro time of the electrons emitted by the instrument, and thus the magnitude of the ambient magnetic field, allowing in-flight calibration of the flux-gate magnetometer with high precision. Results of both applications are discussed.

Notes: Abstract In spite of its short operational life of only five months, the major goals of the Equator-S mission were fulfilled, except that its contribution to the ISTP science is restricted to the morning sector of the outer magnetosphere. A set of twelve papers following this introduction is a first documentation of the achievements. They span from the successful testing and operation of the most advanced and complex way of measuring electric fields in a hot plasma environment by means of electron beams, to various investigations at or near the equatorial magnetopause and in the plasma sheet.

Notes: Abstract We present the first triangulation measurements of electric fields with the electron drift instrument (EDI) on Equator-S. We show results from five high-data-rate passes of the satellite through the near-midnight equatorial region, at geocentric distances of approximately 5–6 RE, during geomagnetically quiet conditions. In a co-rotating frame of reference, the measured electric fields have magnitudes of a few tenths of mV/m, with the E × B drift generally directed sunward but with large variations. Temporal variations of the electric field on time scales of several seconds to minutes are large compared to the average magnitude. Comparisons of the “DC” baseline of the EDI-measured electric fields with the mapped Weimer ionospheric model and the Rowland and Wygant CRRES measurements yield reasonable agreement.

Notes: Abstract The interaction of nuclear and mitochondrial genomes in the alteration of maize (Zea mays L.) mitochondrial orf221 transcript patterns was examined. Northern analyses involving specific maize nuclear genotypes associated with N, C or S cytoplasms revealed considerable orf221 transcript heterogeneity. F1 progenies were developed from maize inbred-cytoplasm combinations that differed for orf221 transcript patterns. Northern analyses revealed that the presence or level of abundance of certain orf221 transcripts was dependent on nuclear genotype. The maize inbred B37(C) exhibits orf221 transcripts of 3500, 3200, 2800, and 1300 nt whereas the F1 of B37(C) x Ky21(N) does not exhibit a 2800-nt transcript but does give transcripts of 2100 and 1250 nt in addition to 3500-, 3200- and 1300-nt transcripts. Northern analyses also suggested that the size or the presence of certain orf221 transcripts was related to the mitochondrial genome configuration. Maize inbred A619 exhibits a 2300-nt orf221 transcript when associated with N cytoplasm and a 2100-nt orf221 transcript when associated with C and S cytoplasms. As a result of deletion of the gene T-urf13, the A188(T7) mitochondrial mutant exhibits only a 3100-nt orf221 transcript and not the very complex T-urf13/orf221 transcript pattern associated with A188(T). The genetic stock A188(T7) x W64A(N)2 gives a highly abundant 2100-nt orf221 transcript not detected in A188(T7). Deletion of T-urf13 has enabled the nuclear genotype of W64A(N) to alter orf221 transcript patterns in a manner not detected in T cytoplasm. This observation suggests that alteration of the mitochondrial genomic configuration adjacent to orf221 results in a different response to nuclear gene products from that observed when or2f21 is present in the T mitochondrial genome configuration.

Notes: Abstract Electric field measurements are reported at 11 magnetopause crossings that occurred during a single in-bound ISEE-1 satellite pass near a local time of 10∶30. In combination with magnetic field data, these measurements show the existence of electric field components tangential to the actual magnetopause in the frame of rest of the magnetopause on every crossing of the current carrying layers associated with the 11 magnetopause traversals. These tangential electric field components were oriented with respect to the magnetopause sheet currents such that there was an electrical power dissipation of between 30 and 110 W km-2 on 10 of the 11 crossings. These results are in agreement with requirements of reconnection theories. Histograms of the normal electric field components and of the orientation, velocity, and thickness of the current carrying layer are presented. Suggestions of the existence of a parallel electric field in the magnetosheath near the magnetopause and of propagation of large amplitude waves along the magnetopause are also made.

Notes: Abstract Spherical double probes for measurements of electric fields on the GEOS-1, GEOS-2, and ISEE-1 satellites are described. An essential feature of these satellites is their conductive surfaces which eliminate errors due to differential charging and enable meaningful diagnostic experiments to be carried out. The result of these experiments is a good understanding of interactions between the plasma, the satellite and the probes, including photo-electron emission on satellite and probes. Electric field measurements are compared with measurements of plasma drift perpendicular to the magnetic field in the solar wind and the magnetosphere and the error bar for the absolute values of the electric field is found to be in the range ±(0.5–1.0) mV m-1 whereas relative variations can be determined with much better accuracy. A useful by-product from a spherical double probe system is the determination of satellite floating potential which is related to the plasma electron flux. This measurement allows high time resolution studies of boundary crossings. Examples of electric field measurements, which reflect the recent scientific results, are given for different regions of the magnetosphere from the bow shock, the inner magnetosphere and the tail. Several examples of simultaneous GEOS-ISEE observations are described.

Notes: Abstract The Electron Beam Instrument (F6) onFreja is the first attempt to apply the electron drift technique in a region of large ambient magnetic fields. The paper describes the operational principles, the technical realization, and the difficulties encountered in the derivation of the electric fields.
