Notes: Abstract The Prt-2 locus is linked with Es-1 and Es-2 loci on chromosome 8 (linkage group XVIII). Recombination frequencies were 8.2% between Es-1 and Es-2, 12.7% between Es-1 and Prt-2, and 4.5% between Es-2 and Prt-2. From these data, the map position of Prt-2 has been estimated on chromosome 8. The Prt-1 and Prt-3 loci, which are linked very closely on the same chromosome, were not determined.

Notes: Abstract Twenty-eight biochemical markers were examined in three strains (Mol-A, Mol-N and Mol-T) derived from the Japanese wild mouse, Mus musculus molossinus, as well as five laboratory strains, Mus musculus musculus. The Mol strains showed specific alleles at as many as 12 loci. These findings emphasize that the Mol strains have significance in future genetic and developmental studies.

Notes: Abstract Restriction endonuclease fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) were found using the cDNA probe Hox-2.1 for the homeo box-2.1 gene in the mouse. Polymorphism was detected in restriction patterns generated by fragments fromHindIII digestion. The great majority of laboratory strains of mice carries theHox-2.1 a allele. Only two laboratory strains carry theHox-2.1 b allele. Among strains of wild origin, the European subspecies (Mus m. domesticus, M. m. brevirostris, andM. m. musculus) and some Asian subspecies (M. m. castaneus) carry theHox-2.1 a allele. The subspecies from Far Eastern countries (M. m. molossinus, Chinese mice of wild origin, andM. m. yamashinai) carry theHox-2.1 ballele. Using the RFLP, theHox-2.1 gene was mapped on chromosome 11. Three-point cross test data showed that the recombination frequency is 29.6% between theHba and theHox-2.1 genes and 23.5% between theHox-2.1 and theEs-3 genes. The gene order ofHba-Hox-2.1-Es-3 has been confirmed.

Notes: Abstract An analysis of patterns of cleavage of mtDNA by restriction endonucleases was performed for nine individuals from the Philippine population of native cattle. MtDNA polymorphisms were detected in the restriction patterns generated by the following six enzymes,BamHI,BglII,EcoRV,HindIII,PstI, andScaI. The restriction patterns showing polymorphisms were distributed nonrandomly among the nine individuals examined from the Philippine population of native cattle, indicating the existence of two separate types of mtDNA. These two types of mtDNA are very different from each other, at the level of subspecies. Since the native Philippine cattle are considered to represent an admixture of European and Indian cattle, the two types of mtDNA must be derived from the mtDNAs of both varieties. The polymorphic sites in mtDNA have been located on a restriction map, and the nucleotide substitutions at some of the sites have also been estimated.

Notes: Abstract Restriction endonuclease fragment length variations (RFLV) were detected by use of the cDNA probeHox-3.1 for the homeo box-3.1 gene and also thec-myc oncogene probe for exon 2. RFLV ofHox-3.1 were found inHindIII restriction patterns, and RFLV of theMyc-1.2 gene inEcoRV patterns. From the RFLV, theHox-3.1 andMyc-1.2 genes were mapped on chromosome 15. Three-point cross test data showed that the frequency of recombination is 26.4% betweenMyc-1.2 andGpt-1, 30.2% betweenGpt-1 andGdc-1, and 9.4% betweenGdc-1 andHox-3.1. The following order of these genes is proposed,Myc-1.2—Gpt-1—Gdc-1—Hox-3.1. All laboratory strains carry theHox-3.1 a andMyc-1.2 a alleles. Among strains of wild origin, domesticus strains carry only theHox-3.1 a andMyc-1.2 a alleles, as do the laboratory strains. One strain ofbrevirostris carries theHox-3.1 a andMyc-1.2 b alleles. Other wild subspecies from Europe and Asia,M. m. musculus, M. m. castaneus, M. m. molossinus, Chinese mice of wild origin, andM. m. yamashinai carry theHox-3.1 b andMyc-1.2 b alleles.

Notes: Abstract Restriction endonuclease cleavage patterns of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in pigs were analyzed using 18 enzymes which recognize six nucleotides and 1 four-nucleotide-recognizing enzyme. Pigs including Taiwan native breeds and miniature strains maintained in Japan were examined in this study; four commercial breeds of pigs and Japanese wild boars have been investigated earlier [Watanabe, T., et al. (1985). Biochem. Genet. 23:105]. mtDNA polymorphisms were observed in the cleavage patterns of five restriction enzymes, Bg1II, EcoRV, ScaI, StuI, and TaqI. The results support the previous hypothesis that pigs must be derived from two different maternal origins, European and Asian wild boars, and that a breed, Large White, arises from both European and Asian pigs. Two HindIII cleavage fragments were cloned into the HindIII site of M13mp10 and were partially sequenced by the dideoxynucleotide-chain termination method. Furthermore, DraI and StuI cleavage sites were newly determined on the restriction endonuclease map. On the basis of these results, the restriction endonuclease cleavage map of pig mtDNA was rewritten. Comparing sequence data of pig mtDNA at 237 positions with those of cow, human, mouse, and rat mtDNA, the sequence difference, silent and replacement changes, and transitions and transversions among mammalian species were estimated. The relationships among them are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Genetic variants were found at two loci for pancreatic proteinase in mice. The Prt-1 locus contains a pair of allelic genes, Prt-1 a and Prt-1 b , ad the Prt-2 locus contains two codominant allelic genes, Prt-2 a and Prt-2 b .Expression of the two genetic variants of proteinase allowed mice strains used in this study to be classified into three phenotypic classes. Prt-1 b andPrt-2 a were found in most of the Japanese inbred strains, Prt-1 b andPrt-2 a were found in most of the inbred strains imported from the United States, and, furthermore, Prt-1 b and Prt-2 b were present in Japanese feral-origin mice strains. Prt-1, Prt-2, and Amy-2 loci did not belong to the same linkage group.
