Notes: Genetic and biochemical studies have shown that the product of the Escherichia coli secY gene is an integral membrane protein with a central role in protein secretion. We found the Bacillus subtilis secY homologue within the spc-alpha ribosomal protein operon at the same position occupied by E. coli secY. B. subtilis secY coded for a hypothetical product 41% identical to E. coli SecY, a protein thought to contain 10 membrane-spanning segments and 11 hydrophilic regions, six of which are exposed to the cytoplasm and five to the periplasm. We predicted similar segments in B. subtilis SecY, and the primary sequences of the second and third cytoplasmic regions and the first, second, fourth, fifth, seventh, and tenth membrane segments were particularly conserved, sharing greater than 50% identity with E. coli SecY. We propose that the conserved cytoplasmic regions interact with similar cytoplasmic secretion factors in both organisms and that the conserved membrane-spanning segments actively participate in protein export. Our results suggest that despite the evolutionary differences reflected in cell wall architecture, Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria possess a similar protein export apparatus.

Notes: A medical food was formulated as a dry powder product containing free essential amino acids, fat and carbohydrates. Samples were stored at 4°C, 25°C, and 40°C and evaluated periodically during storage. Proximate analysis, pH, amino acid analysis, osmolarity, emulsion stability, Hunter color difference, and sensory evaluation tests were performed. Changes could not be detected by the chemical tests employed, but were manifested in sensory analysis. This study indicated that sensory testing of medical foods is a critical tool in the assessment of product stability and must be considered an integral part of any medical food stability program. Chemical analysis alone will not provide sufficient data to allow prediction of either patient acceptance or product integrity.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, work that has been carried out on the processing of data derived from interview forms is discussed. Various attempts have been made to process the data using Kohonen self-organising maps. The object of the processing was to identify both local and global trends within the data sets. The difficulty encountered in training the networks and interpreting the results led to the development of a new vector quantisation network, the ‘Euclidean Memory Array’, a network made distinct by the lack of a conventional learning process. This technique provided a valuable insight into the trends within the data, proving effective even on extremely small data sets.

Notes: A helicopter’s airspeed and sideslip angle is difficult to measure at speeds below 50 knots. This paper describes the application of Artificial Neural Network (ANN) techniques to the helicopter low air-speed problem. Three ANN methods were applied to the problem: a linear network, a Radial Basis Function (RBF) network, and a Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), trained using an implementation of the Levenberg–Marquardt (L–M) algorithm. Internally available measurements, such as control positions and body attitudes and rates, were generated using a realistic simulation model of a Lynx helicopter. These measurements formed the inputs to the ANN methods. The MLP was found to be the superior method. Further testing, including a Tagu-chi analysis, indicated the validity of the method. It is concluded that ANN techniques present a promising solution to the helicopter low airspeed problem.

Notes: Abstract The metabolism of 14CO2 in the cool temperate saltmarsh grass Spartina townsendii was investigated in plants grown in their natural habitats at two temperatures. Both in the spring at 10°C and in the late summer at 25°C radioactivity was initially incorporated into the organic acids malate and aspartate and then transferred to 3-phosphoglycerate in the manner characteristic of the C4 pathway of photosynthesis. Metabolism was not disrupted at the lower temperature as in some C4 plants. Radioactivity was transferred more slowly from malate into alanine, glycine and serine at 10°C, but sugars were labelled equally at both temperatures.

Notes: Abstract It is of practical value to estimate the center and radius of a circle from a given set of noisy coordinate measurements. Since the coordinates of the points on a circle relate to its parameters through the nonlinear circle equation, the estimation problem is inherently nonlinear. Additionally, if the measurements are available only along a small arc, the estimation exhibits generally a bias, together with large variances, even at low-noise magnitudes. This paper presents two algorithms, one iterative and another which has a closed-form solution, aiming at the elimination of biases that occur at small arcs. Simulation results show that the two algorithms do provide unbiased and reliable estimates of the circle parameters for noisy measurements on arcs as small as 45°.
