Summary In order to calculate wave propagation phenomena in fluid-filled tubes one needs a pressure-strain relation besides the basic equations of continuum mechanics. With the assumption that the wall thickness of the tube is small in comparison to its radius, this relationship is of linear form. By combination of the different equations one gets a system of nonlinear partial differential equations of hyperbolic type. It will be shown that there is a steepening effect. Formulas for the flow quantities at such a discontinuity have been derived. Finally one has studies the propagation of triangular waves.
Notes:
