    Notes: The low-temperature electronic spectra of Pr3+ at an octahedral site of symmetry in the PrCl63− moiety, in crystals of Cs2NaPrCl6, Cs2LiPrCl6, and Cs2NaMCl6:Pr(M=Gd, Y) have been measured and interpreted. Together with the results from d–f emission spectra and resonance electronic Raman spectra, these new data permitted the assignment of symmetry representations of up to 39 out the possible 40 crystal field levels of the 4f2 configuration. The inclusion of configuration interaction with the next highest even parity configuration, 4f6p, into the energy level parametrization reduced the mean deviation of the energy level fit using the single 4f2 configuration model alone, by a factor of 2.9 (i.e., from 32.7 to 11.6 cm−1). In particular, the interaction mechanism for the "anomalous" multiplets 1D2 and 1G4 was shown to arise from crystal field mixing with 4f6p states. This leads to the inclusion of up to about 0.5% of fp-orbital character for these 4f2 eigenvectors. In the 4f2 single-configuration fits to triplet levels alone, the fourth-degree crystal field parameter turned out to be larger than in the fits to singlet terms, which is the reverse of the expected order if correlation crystal field effects are important. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract The preparation, crystal structure, and infrared spectrum are reported for the new compound U(H2PO2)4. The coordination geometry of uranium is approximately described as a square antiprism. The four independent hypophosphite groups which are bonded to each uranium atom also serve as bridging groups in linking the uranium centers into a three-dimensional network. The internal H2PO 2 − vibrational modes in the infrared spectrum of U(H2PO2)4 show unit-cell group couplings, particularly for the P-H stretching vibrations, making the spectrum distinctly different from that of the simple bidentate non-bridging H2PO 2 − ion in KH2PO2 and VO(H2PO2)·H2O.

    Notes: Abstract Major urban areas in south-western China exhibit unique air pollutionproblems due to increasing use of high sulphur-content fuels in an environmentof unfavourable topography and climate. Ambient levels of sulphur dioxideexceed the air quality objectives, and this gas is the major precursor of acidrain. Cloudwater chemistry studies are reported for urban, suburban andcountryside locations, during the period 1985–1989. Although cloudwateracidity was found to increase towards the cloud base, the acidity was muchgreater for rainwater samples collected simultaneously, and was morepronounced in urban rather than neighbouring suburban or countryside regions.The main contribution to the acidity arises from below-cloud scavenging of gasand aerosol and model calculations are able to simulate this behaviour.

    Notes: Abstract The composition of Hong Kong rainwater has been studied in the context of seven types of prevailing synoptic weather system. These represent different precipitating airmass origins in terms of continental, maritime, local or mixed sources. Replicate sampling was performed on a daily basis from 1994–1995 for both bulk deposition (n = 60) and simultaneous wet deposition (n = 27) collectors. Reliable analytical data were obtained for the concentrations of the soluble components H+, Na+, Ca2+, K+, Mg2+, Cl-, NO3- and SO42-. The acidity of rainwater was found to be greater when Hong Kong was under the influence of an approaching cyclone (type AC), northeasterly monsoon (type NE) or cold front (type CF) than for prevailing easterly anticyclones (type E), southerly/southwesterly monsoon systems (type S), or cyclonic flows (type C). A common characteristic of occasions of acid rain in Hong Kong was the build-up of local pollutants under conditions of low windspeed, as shown by the significant correlation between rainwater pH and lognormal surface windspeed, but not windvector. The acidity of Hong Kong rainwater was thus largely determined by local sources, although the participation of a continental airmass was evident for some systems. The daily bulk deposition flux of H+ on rainy days varied by more than an order of magnitude from type C (0.2 meq m-2 d-1) to types AC, trough (T) and NE (〉2 meq m-2 d-1).

    Notes: Abstract The concentrations of major anions andcations in bulk deposition were found to varyspatially by factors of up to 65, for two samplings at17 sampling sites separated by 45 km or less in theTerritory of Hong Kong. Under predominantly maritimeairstreams, these variations resulted from localemissions, as well as from lower seasaltconcentrations at the more northerly sites. The weakacidity of the bulk deposition resulted fromneutralization of hydrometeors by basic particulatematter, leading to an unusual anticorrelation of theconcentrations of non-seasalt sulphate and hydrogenions. Greater anthropogenic activity at inland andindustrial sites was generally marked by highernitrate concentrations, with the ratio of nitrate ionconcentrations from the two samplings being stronglycorrelated with that of calcium ion. Chloride lossincreased with increasing concentrations ofnon-seasalt nitrate and sulphate. Most of the variancein the bulk deposition data for 8 major anions andcations could be explained by 2 factors: seasalt andanthropogenic, in common with the 1997 EnvironmentalProtection Department data for these species in totalsuspended particulate matter. Results for 14 solubletrace metal species in the bulk deposition at thesites are also reported.
