Notes: [Auszug] Fine charcoal samples were collected by D. Berry from and around an ancient dumpsite outside the ancient city wall of Terqa, Syria and stored in glass jars (see rf. 1 for details). Obvious extraneous matter, such as rootlets, was removed; the samples were converted to acetylene via lithium carbide2 ...

Notes: [Auszug] Tektite samples weighing about 10 gm. each were broken into fragments having dimensions of about 3 mm. These fragments, together with a known quantity of 97-5 per cent argon-38, prepared by neutron irradiation of sodium chloride, were introduced in a vacuum into a stainless-steel system containing ...

Notes: Abstract A set of careful radiocarbon measurements of historically dated samples from ancient Egypt (approx. 2500–3300 B.C.) show excellent agreement with the historically expected age if the conventionial C-14 dates are corrected for variations in the atmospheric C-14 level over the past millenia. These variations have been established by calibration measurements on dendrochronologically dated bristlecone wood (pinus aristata), and are in the range of several percent, corresponding to age deviations of several hundred years.

Notes: Abstract 1. A light source was constructed for the investigation of the photolysis of water vapor. A xenon discharge arc of a pressure of about 50 mm in a thin wall quartz tubing was used. 2. Molecular hydrogen formed from water vapor in the presence of other gases was measured by employing tritium as a tracer. A vacuum system was constructed, allowing the separation of water vapor from hydrogen to better than 10−8 parts, and the counting of tritiated hydrogen in a Geiger counter. All measurements were carried out in a semi-quantitative way and it was found that the light source and the technique of measuring small amounts of free hydrogen by employing a tritium tracer can be used effectively for further studies of the reactions involving hydrogen and water. 3. Self-decomposition of tritiated water vapor with and without addition of oxygen was measured and was found to be negligible under the particular conditions of the experiments over periods of several months. 4. The photochemically induced exchange of tritium between tritiated water vapor and molecular hydrogen was studied. The quantum yield of this exchange was found to be under the conditions of the experiments of the order of one and probably slightly larger than one. 5. It was possible to demonstrate the formation of free hydrogen from the photolysis of water vapor in the presence of oxygen and to measure these amounts as a function of oxygen pressure. The steady state concentrations of H2 formed from water vapor by irradiation in the presence of oxygen under the influence of UV light were found to be smaller than expected. 6. Photochemical oxidation of H2 by O2 under the particular conditions of the experiments and at pressures of about one millimeter was found to have a quantum yield of the order of magnitude of one.

Notes: Summary By multiplying by certain factors of correctionGoldschmidt's orUnsöld's values for the relative abundance of the elements, a general and coherent picture of the abundance of nuclei can be derived showing that simple rules hold for the abundance of the different types of nuclei. From the fact, that these factors of correction are small and within the limits of error for the majority of the elements, it is to be concluded that the values given by these authors are not far from representing the relative amounts in which the elements originally have been formed. For a small number of elements a comparatively large correction ofGoldschmidt's values is needed, but these elements do nearly all belong to the same geochemical group, viz. that of the „calcophile“ elements. Revised abundance values are tabled, including those for the rare gases. Two plots illustrate the general picture of nuclear abundance. Reference is made to the significance of this picture as a lead towards better theoretical understanding of the structure of the nuclei, and of the formation of the elements.
