Description / Table of Contents:
The metathesis mechanism predicts the formation of polypentenylenes (3), not only from cyclopentene (1) but also from 1,6-cyclodecadiene (2), which is formed during the first step of the ring opening polymerization of cyclopentene. Former attempts to confirm this concept have been unsuccessful. The conformation of the cis,cis-1,6-cyclodecadiene (2) at room temperature should be the reason for these results. In agreement with predictions from Dreiding-models, it was now possible to cleave cis,cis-1,6-cyclodecadiene (2) to cyclopentene (1) at temperatures above 50°C. From these results a synthesis of 1 of high-purity based on ethylene and butadiene appears possible, opening another pathway to this monomer of technical importance, which is independent of C5-cuts.Mass spectrometric analysis of the byproducts, formed during the metathesis reaction, confirmed our hypothesis about the formation of polypentenylenes. Furthermore, it explained the causes for a number of undesired side reactions observed during the reaction of olefins with tungsten-containing metathesis catalysts.
Notes:
