Notes: The effect of column temperature on the separation of the sixteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) of mixture SRM 1647a of the US Environmental Protection Agency has been studied on different micropacked ODS columns. Isothermal temperature optimization was successfully used for complete separation of the PAHs on a polymeric ODS stationary phase, whereas temperature programmed conditions were selected for separation on a monomeric ODS stationary phase.

Notes: Fused silica columns (320 μm i.d.) were packed with 10 μm, 15-25 μm, and 25-40 μm microcrystalline cellulose triacetate (CTA) and the influence of the particle diameter on column efficiency was investigated. The dependence of retention, selectivity, resolution, and analysis time on column temperature was studied for the separation of several racemates on microcolumns packed with 15-25 μm CTA. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Open tubular columns of 25 and 50 μm i.d. have been coated with up to 2 μm thick layers of SE-54 (lowest β-value = 6.25). Filling of the columns and evaporation of the solvent were studied as a function of column length and time. Since the viscosity of the stationary phase solution increases exponentially with concentration, the filling process becomes time consuming and high filling pressures are required. The evaporation or coating speed is shown to be controlled by the resistance to mass transfer of the solvent vapor through the coated sections of the column. For 25 and 50 μm i.d. columns, experimental evaporation times deviate little from theoretical predictions. Almost no influence of the stationary phase on the coating speed was observed. The transition from mass transfer limited coating speed to heat transfer limited coating speed is illustrated using literature data.

Notes: The chromatographic performance of 50 μm internal diameter (i.d.) fused silica columns coated with up to 2 μm films of immobilized SE-54 (methyl phenyl (5%) silicone) is evaluated under gas chromatographic conditions. The influence of pressure drop on the plate height is discussed. In comparison to thick film 250-530 μm i.d. columns, much higher efficiencies and faster analyses are obtained. Practical examples, performed on a standard GC instrument, illustrate the features of thick film 50 μm i.d. columns.
