    Description: Although hydrologic models provide hypothesis testing of complex dynamics occurring at catchments, freshwater quality modeling is still incipient at many subtropical headwaters. In Brazil, a few modeling studies assess freshwater nutrients, limiting policies on hydrologic ecosystem services. This paper aims to compare freshwater quality scenarios under different land-use and land-cover (LULC) change, one of them related to ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA), in Brazilian headwaters. Using the spatially semidistributed Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model, nitrate, total phosphorous (TP) and sediment were modeled in catchments ranging from 7.2 to 1037 km². These headwaters were eligible areas of the Brazilian payment for ecosystem services (PES) projects in the Cantareira System, which had supplied water to 9 million people in the Sao Paulo metropolitan region. We considered SWAT modeling of three LULC scenarios: (i) recent past scenario (S1), with historical LULC in 1990; (ii) current land-use scenario (S2), with LULC for the period 2010-2015 with field validation; and (iii) future land-use scenario with PES (S2 + EbA). This latter scenario proposed forest cover restoration through EbA following the river basin plan by 2035. These three LULC scenarios were tested with a selected record of rainfall and evapotranspiration observed in 2006-2014, with the occurrence of extreme droughts. To assess hydrologic services, we proposed the hydrologic service index (HSI), as a new composite metric comparing water pollution levels (WPL) for reference catchments, related to the grey water footprint (greyWF) and water yield. On the one hand, water quality simulations allowed for the regionalization of greyWF at spatial scales under LULC scenarios. According to the critical threshold, HSI identified areas as less or more sustainable catchments. On the other hand, conservation practices simulated through the S2 + EbA scenario envisaged not only additional and viable best management practices (BMP), but also preventive decision-making at the headwaters of water supply systems.

    Description: Actual Evapotranspiration (AET) consists of evaporation from rainwater intercepted by the canopy before it reaches the ground, from wet and moist soil, and the transpiration through stomata on plant stems and leaves. Evapotranspiration claimed 61% of all rainwater that falls on land. Using the satellite remote sensing data, evapotranspiration from earth land surface have been collected by NASA. Zhang, Kimball et al. (2009) spatially aggregated the global 8-km NASA dataset and published the global monthly AET data with half-degree and one-degree resolutions (Zhang, Kimball et al. 2009). These datasets cover the time period 1983 to 2006. We reformatted the MODIS-AET data, prepared by Zhang et al 2009, in order to be compatible with SWAT-CUP input data. We prepared the MODIS-AET data in two formats (Fig 1). This dataset could be used for calibration and validation of SWAT actual evapotranspiration outputs. SWAT provides monthly actual evapotranspiration at HRU and Subbasin levels in "output.hru" and "output.sub" files, respectively. The SWAT output could be calibrated against observed MODIS-AET data through one of the following approaches: 1) Overlaying the MODIS-AET grids extracted from the 2W2E website with subbasin map of SWAT project and aggregating the located AET grids inside each subbasin to one single grid as the representer of AET of the subbasin. 2) Assessing the individual AET grids files and selecting a proper grid as a representative grid for every subbasin.     Notes: : The El Nino/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomena alter global weather patterns with consequences for fresh water supply. ENSO events impact regions and their natural resource sectors around the globe. For example, in 1997 and 1998, a strong El Nino brought warm ocean temperatures, flooding, and record snowfall to the west coast of the United States. Research on ENSO events has improved long range climate predictions, affording the potential to reduce the damage and economic cost of these weather patterns. Here, using the Hydrologic Unit Model for the United States (HUMUS), we simulate the impacts of four types of ENSO states (Neutral, El Niño, La Niña, and strong El Niño) on water resources in the conterminous United States. The simulations show that La Niña conditions increase water yield across much of the country. We find that water yield increases during El Niño years across the south while declining in much of the rest of the country. However, under strong El Niño conditions, regional water yields are much higher than Neutral, especially along the West Coast. Strong El Niño is not simply an amplification of El Niño; it leads to strikingly different patterns of water resource response.

    Notes: : BASINS (Better Assessment Science Integrating Point and Nonpoint Sources) version 3.0, is the updated software system developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Office of Water in order to meet the requirements of developing Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) programs. BASINS provides an enhanced set of nation-wide databases, several new and interchangeable tools and models integrated in a new modular architecture, operating within ArcView Geographical Information System (GIS) for desktop PCs. This paper describes the integration of three new key components: (1) a tool that optimizes the automatic definition and segmentation of the watershed and stream network based on topography (Digital Elevation Models), NHD (National Hydrography Dataset) or other ancillary stream data; (2) a tool to define the Hydrologic Response Units (HRUs) over the watershed and subwatersheds; and (3) SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) model and a respective integrated user-friendly interface. The first two components, based on raster functionality, improve the previously adopted simplistic methods for the hydrologic definition, segmentation and basic geomorphic assessment of the watershed and open to the usage of external datasets besides those distributed with the whole BASINS package. In addition, these components share generating datasets, hereby promoting the usage by other tools and models as well as other models that in the future could be introduced in BASINS. The third component introduces the SWAT model into BASINS. SWAT is a hydrologic distributed model with proven success in watershed assessment of both agricultural and urban scenario management effects on water quality and is based on over 30 years of USDA modeling experience. The description of these integrated components is followed by a simple, yet promising, application to the Upper North Bosque River watershed in Texas, using the default data distributed with BASINS.

    Notes: : The cascade correlation neural network was used to predict the two-year peak discharge (Q2) for major regional river basins of the continental United States (US). Watersheds ranged in size by four orders of magnitude. Results of the neural network predictions ranged from correlations of 0.73 for 104 test data in the Souris-Red Rainy river basin to 0.95 for 141 test data in California. These results are improvements over previous multilinear regressions involving more variables that showed correlations ranging from 0.26 to 0.94. Results are presented for neural networks trained and tested on drainage area, average annual precipitation, and mean basin elevation. A neural network trained on regional scale data in the Texas Gulf was comparable to previous estimates of Q2 by regression. Our research shows Q2 was difficult to predict for the Souris-Red Rainy, Missouri, and Rio Grande river basins compared to the rest of the US, and acceptable predictions could be made using only mean basin elevation and drainage areas of watersheds.

    Notes: Abstract The Ogallala or High Plains aquifer provides water for about 20% of the irrigated land in the United States. About 20 km3 (16.6 million acre-feet) of water are withdrawn annually from this aquifer. In general, recharge has not compensated for withdrawals since major irrigation development began in this region in the 1940s. The mining of the Ogallala has been pictured as an analogue to climate change in that many GCMs predict a warmer and drier future for this region. In this paper we attempt to anticipate the possible impacts of climate change on the sustainability of the aquifer as a source of water for irrigation and other purposes in the region. We have applied HUMUS, the Hydrologic Unit Model of the U.S. to the Missouri and Arkansas-White-Red water resource regions that overlie the Ogallala. We have imposed three general circulation model (GISS, UKTR and BMRC) projections of future climate change on this region and simulated the changes that may be induced in water yields (runoff plus lateral flow) and ground water recharge. Each GCM was applied to HUMUS at three levels of global mean temperature (GMT) to represent increasing severity of climate change (a surrogate for time). HUMUS was also run at three levels of atmospheric CO2 concentration (hereafter denoted by [CO2]) in order to estimate the impacts of direct CO2 effects on photosynthesis and evapotranspiration. Since the UKTR and GISS GCMs project increased precipitation in the Missouri basin, water yields increase there. The BMRC GCM predicts sharply decreased precipitation and, hence, reduced water yields. Precipitation reductions are even greater in the Arkansas basin under BMRC as are the consequent water yield losses. GISS and UKTR climates lead to only moderate yield losses in the Arkansas. CO2-fertilization reverses these losses and yields increase slightly. CO2 fertilization increases recharge in the base (no climate change) case in both basins. Recharge is reduced under all three GCMs and severities of climate change.

    Notes: Ductile phase toughened composites contain phases with significantly different physical properties. Consequently, these phases thin at different rates depending on the sample preparation procedure. A new TEM foil preparation method for the ductile phase toughened Nb-10 a/o Si material has been developed. The method involves chemical thinning in a 70% nitric acid/ 30% hydrofluoric acid solution followed by electropolishing in a 12.5% sulfuric acid/87.5% methanol electrolyte at -40°C. This procedure for making TEM foils results in large thin areas with the minimum of artifacts. Mechanical grinding of a sample followed by either ion milling, dimpling, or electropolishing produced foils with large electron transparent areas, but with uncharacteristic features of the original Nb-10 a/o Si alloy microstructure. These artifacts were identified as dislocations, surface mottling, and antiphase domains. © 1992 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Description: AlGaN/GaN high electron mobility transistor stacks deposited on a single growth platform are used to compare the most common transition, AlN to GaN, schemes used for integrating GaN with Si.
