Description: After a few years of serious illness Dr. W. L. van Utrecht, born 13 December 1926 in Tiel, died still very unexpected at the age of 67 year on 10 August 1994. After a study of chemistry and biology he joined from 1952 till 1963 the working group for Cetacea of the Netherlands Organisation of Applied Sciences (TNO), and the University of Amsterdam in the periods 1953-1956 and 1963-1988. In the season 1953/54 his first large expedition took place with the catcher “Enern”, a three month trip for whale marking, and two month visit to South Georgia. As an inspector he made a cruise to the Antarctic ocean with the Dutch whalefactory ship “Willem Barendsz” in the seasons 1959/1960 and as a scientist in the period 1962/1963. In 1966 he got his PhD at the same day as his wife C. N. Van Utrecht-Cock. In the period 1955-1963 important contributions were made to the Scientific Subcommittee of the International Whaling Commission. His last important field work was done during a scientific cruise in 1980 to the North Atlantic Ocean, studying bathypelagic fish and eel larvae. Van Utrecht was a broadly educated person, discussing politics, arts and economics with the same ease as biological problems, always having the literature and newest developments at hand to enlighten the discussions. His main interest foccussed on Whales and whaling, growth in all kind of animals, and marine biology as is clear from his literature list. A great number of manuscripts he left, however, in an unfinished state, not inclined to complete minor details in general theory or results. For this reason he did not publish on, for example, the history of whaling and sciences, development of universities, general principles of symmetry in biology. Many students still have great profit from his allround interest and knowledge.

Description: The Royal Dutch Navy participated in the cruises of the Cooperative Investigations in the Caribbean and Adjacent Regions (Cicar) from 1970 up to 1973 with H.Nl.M.S. “Luymes” and made 39 cruises. For general information on these cruises and preliminary results one is referred to the titles in the list of literature marked with a asterisk. Plankton collecting was executed by the ornithologists Drs. S. van Halewijn and Drs. D.M.C. Poppe and when ornithologists were not aboard the crew of the researchship did valuable work by continuing sampling. As plankton samples could in many cases not be correlated with the official Cicar Stations new numbers are added when possible. Confusion of the numbers is impossible as the new numbers are single numbers, the original ones are double numbers separated by a hyphen. The stationlist is divided into two parts, one dealing with the net samples and one with the pump samples. To correlate the net samples with the pump samples, the list of pump samples (numbers starting with a “P”) should be consulted wich gives the correlating net samples also.

Description: The mid North Atlantic between 24°N and 55°N along 30°W and between 20°W and 30°W along approx. 25°N, investigated by the AMNAPE cruises in the four seasons, spring (1980), summer (1983) autumn (1981) and winter (1982), is dominated by Temperate waters with a northern and southern branch of the North Atlantic Drift, Subtropical Sargasso Sea waters in the south and Subarctic waters in the north (Yen der Spoel, 1981, 1986; Van der Spoel & Meerding 1983; Pafort- van Iersel, 1985). The present study gives the relation of the microplankton distribution in the upper 5m of the water column with the hydrography and seasons.

Description: The medusa fauna of the mid North Atlantic Ocean between 24\xc2\xb0 and 55\xc2\xb0 N along approximately 30\xc2\xb0 W is studied. Two Hydromedusae new to science, Oceania tydemani and Annatiara lempersi, are described. The differences in fauna south and north of 42\xc2\xb0 N, and faunal borders near 50\xc2\xb0, 48\xc2\xb0, 45\xc2\xb0, 35\xc2\xb0, 30\xc2\xb0, and 34\xc2\xb0-37\xc2\xb0 N are discussed. The vertical distribution and for some species the diurnal migration and subtropical submergence are recorded.

Description: In C. inflexa the mantle gland and its border show twenty-two bands. Differences in banding with C. longirostris are discussed. It appeared to be possible to discriminate the soft parts of juveniles in both species. Of special value for discrimination is the shape of the lateral appendages. The shells can be distinguished by the relative length of the caudal spine, which is longer in C. inflexa than in C. longirostris. Different developmental stages of C. longirostris are described and those of C. inflexa are added for comparison. While for the latter species the soft parts grow larger parallel with the increment of the shell, this is not the case in C. longirostris, due to the occurrence of minute stages and shedding of the caudal spine. The differences in shedding between C. longirostris and Diacria are described.

Description: The polychaetous worms collected by the Siboga-Expedition (1899-1900) are listed with some annotations. A few specimens \xe2\x80\x93 identified by Augener and Pettibone but never published \xe2\x80\x93 are added, so that this list gives a complete survey of all Polychaeta collected by the mentioned expedition. The types of 269 nominal species present in the Institute of Taxonomic Zoology (Zoological Museum), Amsterdam are incorporated in this list, for some species lectotypes are desinated.

Description: Re-examination of the Diacria quadridentata species group based upon morphology of the shell and zoogeographic data, led to a new classification comprising the recent taxa: D. quadridentata, D. costata with an equatorial and a central water form, D. danae with an equatorial and a central water form, D. schmidti schmidti, D. erythra crassa and the fossil taxa D. schmidti cocidentalis and D. erythra erythra from surface sediments. A method has been developed to estimate the relative age of the population, based on the development of shell and soft parts. Shell growth in the period of minute and adult stages together does not exceed 0.2 mm, and differs from species to species.
