Description: Reusable surface insulation is considered a prime candidate for heat shielding large areas of the space shuttle vehicle. The composition and fabrication of RSI materials are discussed, followed by evolution of RSI and current problems, physical and thermal properties, arc plasma test data and results, and material improvement research. Finally, a summary of RSI technology status is presented.

Description: The flammability test program for Apollo command module and lunar module mockups is described. The fire safety design of the modules was verified by performing deliberate ignitions at many locations while the interior atmosphere was controlled to simulate realistic flight conditions. The data obtained for each test and restrictions on various materials are discussed.

Description: In response to the failure of a conical section of the Insat C satellite during certification testing, the use of beryllium for payload structures, particularly in sheet product form, is being reevaluated. A test program was initiated to study the tensile, shear, and out-of-plane failure modes of beryllium cross-rolled sheet and to apply data to the development of an appropriate failure criterion. Tensile test results indicated that sanding the surface of beryllium sheet has no significant effect on yield strength but can produce a profound reduction in ultimate strength and results obtained by finite element analysis. Critical examination of these test results may contribute to the modification of a JSC policy for the use of beryllium in orbiter and payload structures.

Description: A flight experiment was performed on the eighth Space Shuttle mission to measure reaction of surfaces with atomic oxygen in the low earth orbital environment. More than 300 individual samples were exposed to ram (normal to surface) conditions for 41.75 hr leading to a total atomic oxygen fluence of 3.5 x 10 to the 20th atoms/sq cm. Reaction rates for surface recession measured primarily by mass change of several organic films were in the range of 3.0 x 10 to the -24th cu cm/atom, and less than 5 x 10 to the -26th cu cm/atom for Teflon. Effects of parameters such as temperature and solar radiation were assessed, as was the importance of atmospheric ionic species on surface recession. In an experiment performed on the fifth Space Shuttle flight, no temperature dependence of reaction rate for the organic films studied was found in the temperature range of 25 to 125 C. Preliminary findings indicate that the reactivity of organic films is not affected by temperature (in the range of 65 to 125 C), solar radiation, or ionic species. Significant surface morphology changes led to a carpet-like appearance also consistent with previous findings.
