Notes: [Auszug] SIR - We have reconstructed the phy-logeny for various mammal species based on the sequence of the prion protein gene. By tracing the pattern of amino-acid sub-stitutions through the phylogeny, we have identified two pairs of derived substitu-tions uniquely shared by cattle (Bos taunts) and the ...

Notes: [Auszug] The apparatus is a portable electric blower (Type N.W.B.E.) as supplied by Wolf Electric Tools, Ltd., London, and run on the mains supply. A metal barrel (10 in. long, 5-5 in. diam.) is attached to the intake, and on the lid of this barrel is a flexible hose ending in a hard rubber nozzle with a ...

Notes: [Auszug] Recent work, carried out by us independently, together with some work by earlier authors, leads to the conclusion that most of the families of Geocorisae fall naturally into two groups ; the evidence is as follows : (1) Tullgren5 erected a group, Trichophora, which included families from three of ...

Notes: Abstract In the spring female frit flies (Oscinella frit) migrate more than males. This is concluded as aerial populations and those on young oat crops show a preponderance of females, whilst in the grasslands where they have emerged there is an excess of males. Laboratory and field studies confirm that at emergence the proportions of males and females in the population are equal. The excess of males at the emergence sites will increase the probability of females being inseminated soon after emergence and hence having a high reproductive value when they migrate.

Notes: Abstract Dispersal of adult Viburnum whitefly,Aleurotrachelus jelinekii (Frauenf.) was assessed over a period of 6 years, both in the field and in the laboratory. Flight activity did not appear to be strongly affected by normal variation in either temperature or windspeed. The aerial density of flying adults decreased rapidly with distance from the host plant. Movement up to 5 m from the host plant was found to be density dependent, although there is no suggestion that longer flights become more frequent at higher population densities. More males were caught at the beginning of the season and the number of males flying increased as the population density rose. Insects were flight mature after about 3 h, but flew readily only after 2 days. Longer flights were observed from younger females at a time when they would move from old to young leaves. Landing site preference was not recorded, which contrasts with the behaviour of the cabbage whitefly. Flight in the Viburnum whitefly appears to redistribute the population within the immediate habitat, but migration did not appear to be a significant demographic factor in the isolated populations studied.

Notes: Abstract Evidence from direct observations in the oatfield and from catches in various traps shows that Oscinella frit adults of the panicle generation, emerging in the oatfield, have a high level of migratory activity.

Notes: Abstract The occurrence of an additional generation in oats of the frit fly (Oscinella frit L.) is reported. The partial emergence of the generation and the high rate of larval mortality are discussed.
