Notes: Abstract The areal distribution of organic C contents, δ13C values, total N and P and biogenic Si contents in surficial sediments were used to study the distribution, origin and diagenetic transformations of sedimented biogenic debris in the eutrophic subalpine Lake Bled (Slovenia), which for most of the yearhas an anoxic hypolimnion. The influence of an allochthonous input, restricted to the western basin, was clearly traced by higher organic C and total N and P contents, higher δ13C values, and higher sedimentation rate in comparison to the eastern basin. The low δ13C values of sedimentary organic matter in the major part of the lake, lower than the δ13C values of different types of organic matter, suggest that this sedimentary organic matter is most probably the product of a microbial community and not a residue of primary production. The temporal variation of benthic diffusive fluxes of NH4, Si and PO4, derived from modelling the pore water profiles, was related to sedimentation of phytoplanktonic blooms, while the PO4 fluxes were also dependent on changing redox conditions at the sediment-water interface in the period of the winter-spring overtum. The removal of PO4 in pore waters is probably due to the adsorption of phosphate and precipitation of apatite and vivianite. The budget of C, N and P at the sediment-water interface revealed a high recycling efficiency (〉70%), also confirmed by the rather uniform (or only slightly decreasing) vertical profiles of organic C, total N and P in sediment cores and C/N and C/P ratios. The percentage of biogenic Si recycling is low (〈10%), suggesting its removal in sediments.

Notes: Abstract The nonideality of the epithermal neutron flux distribution at a reactor site can be described by a 1/E1+α spectrum representation, with parameter α being a measure of the nonideality. α-values were determined in 3 typical irradiation positions of the TRIGA MARK II reactor of the “Jozef Stefan” Institute, Ljubljana, Yugoslavia, using the “Cd-ratio for multi-monitor” method. The simpler “Cd-ratio for dual monitor” method (monitors:197Au−94Zr) also yielded reliable results. This characterisation is of use in the k0-method of NAA, which is recently introduced at the Institute.

Notes: Abstract Neutron-flux behaviour during irradiation should be known when applying the ko-method of neutron activation analysis /NAA/. During two 100-hour operating periods of the TRIGA MARK II reactor, Ljubljana, the flux was measured by means of a197Au/n,γ/198Au monitor /Eγ=411.8 keV/. Cadmium-covered irradiations were also performed to obtain the epithermal flux and thermal-to-epithermal flux ratio variations. Consistency was found between these results and the reactor operators' logbook record.

Notes: Abstract The k0-standardization method of neutron activation analysis was applied for the multielement analysis of the NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) proposed Standard Reference Material (SRM) No. 1547 Peach Leaves. At the moment, 50 elements can be determined from a one day irradiation, using the TRIGA Mark II reactor of the “Jožef Stefan” Institute, Ljubljana. Among them, 28 elements were determined quantitatively, and for the remaining 22 elements, “less than” values were obtained.

Notes: Abstract This paper reports on the contribution made by some cooperating laboratories to the further development of the k0-method. As to the extensions and improvements, emphasis is put on the availability of an Al−0.1% Au reference material for the k0-standardization of NAA, on the counting of large-diameter samples, on the use of a low-energy photon detector, and on the introduction of the Westcott formalism for the handling of “non-1/v” (n, γ) reactions. A survey is given of a large variety of scientific and industrial applications, including the analysis of biological, geological and geochronological samples, various kinds of reference materials, high-purity products and ceramics, and a number of environmental pollution indicators. As shown, the advantage of the k0-standardization will be fully exploited with an increasing level of automation in NAA laboratories. Eventually, new measurements and evaluations of k0-factors and related nuclear data are given in an Appendix.

Notes: Abstract The computer program SOLANG, originally developed by MOENS et al. for the efficiency conversion via effective solid angles (Ω), is extended in this work to cylindrical sources with a diameter larger than that of the Ge-detector. New program, named EXTSANGLE, is experimentally checked in our three laboratories. For the most unfavourable case from the standpoint of the accuracy of $$\bar \Omega $$ (bulky source counted at the top of detector), discrepancies were below 7% in the whole range of gamma-energies considered (88–1115 keV), with an average of 3–4%. EXTSANGLE is extensive and flexible with respect to the data input, storage and output, thus contributing to the automation of a gamma-spectrometry laboratory dealing, for instance, with the k0-NAA and/or environmental radioactivity monitoring.

Notes: Abstract In this work the use of the reagents 4-NDP and Na-DDTC in the radiochemical separation of Cd, Co, Cu, Se and Zn from a single aliquot of sample shortly after the end of irradiation in a flux of thermal neutrons is described. The performance of the proposed separation method was tested by means of analyses of these elements in a series of SRMs and good agreement with certified values was obtained.

Notes: Abstract Although k0-factors and related nuclear data for 122 radionuclides of interest in (n,γ) reactor neutron activation analysis have been tabulated, there are still some reactions attracting interest with respect to the accuracy of the literature data. The present paper deals with the reaction130Ba(n,γ)131Ba, for which a more accurate half-life is proposed, together with re-evaluated Q0 and k0 factors. The new values are 11.53 days for T, 21.3 for Q0, and for the k0's 3.90×10−5, 2.75×10−5, 1.92×10−5 and 6.48×10−5 for the γ-rays at 123.8 keV, 216.1 keV, 373.2 keV and 496.3 keV, respectively.

Notes: Abstract Three watersheds were studied by sampling bulk precipitation deposition, seepage water at 50 cm soil depth and spring water. As the main analytical method for determination of trace elements and heavy metals in water samples, thek 0-based method of INAA was used. The results showed an increased content and concentration range of trace elements in precipitation, soil water and spring water in the vicinity of the Šoštanj Thermal Power Plant. We demonstrated that thek 0-based method of INAA as a multielement nondestructive technique is a highly suitable approach to determining some toxic trace elements in environmental studies of the water cycle.
