Abstract An equivalent resonance radius is introduced, which plays the role of a general geometrical parameter, on the basis of coupled TS-TT vibration theory in AT-cut quartz crystals. It is further used in analyzing some of the basic characteristics of contoured quartz crystals, such as motion inductance, resonance interval, amplitude of mechanical displacement, post-metallization resonance-frequency change, degree of suppression of unwanted anharmonic vibration modes. The relationship between motion inductance and postmetallization resonance frequency change, on one hand, and electrode dimensions and spherical contour radius of the piezoelement, on the other, is experimentally examined.
