    Abstract: This book discusses one of the biggest challenges of the food industry, which is waste management. Food industries generate high amounts of waste, both solid and liquid, resulting from the production, processing and consumption of food. Stringent environmental legislators have made the task of waste management more challenging. Through the three sections of this book, the readers are introduced to the different types of wastes generated, utilization of waste through food processing industry and sustainable waste management technologies. The different chapters describe how the biomass and the valuable nutrients from food industry wastes could be used to develop value-added products. The book reiterates that food wastes and their by-products are an excellent source of sugars, minerals, dietary fiber, organic acids, bio active compounds such as polyphenols, carotenoids and phytochemicals etc. This book is an excellent resource for industry experts, researchers and students in the field of food science, food processing and food waste management.

    Abstract: This book presents a comprehensive view on mycotoxins of agricultural as well as non-agricultural environments and their health effects in humans and animals. Mycotoxins have immunosuppressive effects; but some of them can cause cancers, mutagenicity, neurotoxicity, liver and kidney damage, birth defects, DNA damage and respiratory disorders. The problem of mycotoxins is long-lasting and their direct or indirect exposures to humans and animals must be further discussed. The first chapter will cover the historical perspective of mycotoxins along with timeline while the second one will provide overview including classification of mycotoxins and mycotoxicoses.     Description: Phyllanthus fraternus is an important medicinal plant, popularly known for its hepatoprotective and antiviral activities since ancient times. Various physiological factors like carbon sources, concentration of agar, pH of the media and effect of season of explants collection were optimized for high frequency regeneration of P. fraternus. The frequency of regeneration, average number and length of shoots were highly influenced by the type and concentration of carbon sources (monosaccharides and disaccharides, 1 to 4%), agar concentration (0.2 to 1%) and pH (4.5 to 6.8) of the media. Media containing 3% sucrose, 0.6% agar at pH 5.8 was best for regeneration. Seasonal variation of explants collection significantly affected the axillary shoots proliferation from explants and best proliferation was observed from explants collected during April to June. Genetic fidelity of regenerated plants was assessed by random amplified polymorphic DNA markers. No polymorphism was detected in micropropagated plants and the mother plant, revealing the genetic homogeneity of the in vitro raised plantlets. This is the first report regarding establishment of genetic fidelity of micropropagated P. fraternus plants, which could be successfully applied for the mass multiplication, germplasm conservation and further genetic transformation assays to meet the ever increasing demand of this medicinally potent plant for industrial and pharmaceutical uses.

    Description: Intrinsic resistance to ionizing radiation is the major impediment in the treatment and clinical management of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), leading to tumor relapse and poor prognosis. Although several biological and molecular mechanisms are responsible for resistance to radiotherapy in ESCC, the molecule(s) involved in predicting radiotherapy response and prognosis are still lacking, thus requiring a detailed understanding. Recent studies have demonstrated an imperative correlation amongst several long non-coding RNAs and their involvement in complex cellular networks like DNA damage and repair, cell cycle, apoptosis, proliferation, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition. Additionally, accumulating evidence has suggested abnormal expression of lncRNAs in malignant tumor cells before and after radiotherapy effects in tumor cells’ sensitivity. Thus, lncRNAs indeed represent unique molecules that can influence tumor cell susceptibility for various clinical interventions. On this note, herein, we have summarized the current status of lncRNAs in augmenting resistance/sensitivity in ESCC against radiotherapy. In addition, we have also discussed various strategies to increase the radiosensitivity in ESCC cells under clinical settings.

    Description: In present study free radical scavenging potential of aerial parts and root ofPhyllanthus fraternuswas investigated. Extraction was done in water and ethanol. Total antioxidant capacity was measured by DPPH free radical scavenging method; ethanolic extract of aerial part was most potent in activity with 50% inhibition at 258 μg/mL concentration. Lipid peroxidation (LPO) was measured in terms of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) by using egg-yolk homogenates as lipid-rich media with EC50of aerial part (ethanolic) 1522 μg/mL which was found to be most active. Superoxide (SO) radical scavenging activity was measured using riboflavin-light-nitroblue tetrazolium assay. Ethanolic and aqueous extract of both aerial part and root was almost similar in superoxide radical scavenging activity. Reducing power was determined on the basis ofFe3+-Fe2+transformation in the presence of extract. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents were also measured by spectroscopic method. Results showed that the ethanolic fraction of aerial part is most active towards antioxidant potential and this activity is related to its polyphenolic content and reducing potential. Thus,P. fraternusextract can be used as potent natural antioxidant.
