    Notes: : The antioxidant, antifungal, and antibacterial potentials of essential oil and acetone extract of Anethum graveolens L. were investigated in the present study. The extract has shown excellent activity for the inhibition of primary and secondary oxidation products for rapeseed oil in comparision with butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), which were evaluated using peroxide, thiobarbituric acid, p-anisidine, and carbonyl values. The activity of extract was further confirmed using other antioxidant properties such as ferric thiocyanate method inlinoleic acid system, which reducing power and scavenging effect (%) on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical. Using inverted Petri plate method, the volatile oil completely inhibited the growth of Fusarium graminearum at 6 μL dose. Moreover, using poison food technique, the essential oil was found to be highly effective for controlling the growth of Penicillium citrinum and Aspergillus niger. In antibacterial investigations, using agar well diffusion method, the extract has shown better activity for Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus in comparison with commercial bactericide. However, essential oil has shown better activity for Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Gas chromatographic-mass spectroscopy studies on essential oil resulted in the identification of 35 components, which account for the 98.9% of the total amount. The major component was carvone (55.2%) followed bylimonene (16.6%), dillapiole (14.4%), andlinalool (3.7%). The analysis of acetone extract showed the presence of 25 components, which account for 94.5% of the total amount. The major components were dill apiole (43.2%), linoleic acid (23.1%), trans-anethole (11.0%), 2-propanone, 1-(4-methoxyphenyl) (4.6%), carvone (3.1%), p-anisaldehyde (2.7%), and myristicin (1.5%). In conclusion, the results presented here show that dill essential oil could be considered as a source for natural antimicrobial, whereas its extract could be considered as an alternative source of natural antioxidant.

    Notes: Summary.  This paper presents a protocol for leader election in complete networks with a sense of direction. Sense of direction provides nodes the capability of distinguishing between their incident links according to a global scheme. We propose a protocol for leader election which requires O(N) messages and O(log N) time. The protocol is message optimal and the time complexity is a significant improvement over currently known protocols for this problem.

    Notes: Summary In this paper, we present an efficient distributed protocol for constructing a minimum-weight spanning tree (MST). Gallager, Humblet and Spira [5] proposed a protocol for this problem with time and message complexitiesO(N logN) andO(E+NlogN) respectively. A protocol withO(N) time complexity was proposed by Awerbuch [1]. We show that the time complexity of the protocol in [5] can also be expressed asO((D+d) logN), whereD is the maximum degree of a node andd is a diameter of the MST and therefore this protocol performs better than the protocol in [1] wheneverD+d〈N/logN. We give a protocol which requiresO(min(N, (D+d)logN)) time andO(E+NlogNlogN/loglogN) messages. The protocol constructs a minimum spanning tree by growing disjoint subtrees of the MST (which are referred to asfragments). Fragments having the same minimum-weight outgoing edge are combined until a single fragment which spans the entire network remains. The protocols in [5] and [1] enforce a balanced growth of fragments. We relax the requirement of balanced growth and obtain a highly asynchronous protocol. In this protocol, fast growing fragments combine more often and there-fore speed up the execution.

    Notes: Summary. The complexity of designing protocols has led to compositional techniques for designing and verifying protocols. We propose a technique based on the notion of parallel composition of protocols. We view a composite protocol as an interleaved execution of the component protocols subject to a set of constraints. Using the constraints as building blocks, we define several constraint-based structures with each structure combining the properties of the component protocols in a different way. For instance, the component protocols of a multifunction protocol can be structured so that the composite protocol performs all the individual functions concurrently or performs only one of them depending on the order of initiation of the component protocols. We provide inference rules to infer safety and liveness properties of the composite protocol. Some properties are derived from those of the component protocols while others are derived from the structuring mechanism (the set of constraints) used to combine the component protocols.

    Notes: Summary Genetic regulation of host resistance in chickpea-Ascochyta rabiei interaction system is governed by two dominant complementary genes each in the genotypes GLG 84038 and GL 84099, whereas the resistance in a black seeded genotype ICC 1468 was controlled by one dominant and one recessive independent gene. In all the genotypes, resistance is operated by inter-allelic interactions. The genes conferring resistance in GLG 84038 were found to be different to those operating in GL 84099 and ICC 1468. Among the five dominant genes dispersed in 3 genotypes under study, at least one has been reported for the first time, as to date, only three dominant genes have been reported in the literature. The four identified dominant genes in GLG 84038 and GL 84099 have been named as Arc1, Arc2 (in GLG 84038) and Arc3, Arc4 (in GL 84099). The undistinguished dominant gene in ICC 1468 has been named as Arc5(3,4) as it could not be equated or differentiated from Arc3 or Arc4. The recessive gene in ICC 1468 has been named as Arc1. Generation mean analysis of the 6 resistant × susceptible crosses involving the same genotypes, revealed that the genes conferring resistance in any of the 3 genotypes did not follow simple Mendelian inheritance but were influenced by inter allelic interactions. Additive gene effect along with dominance were operative in all the 3 genotypes under study in conferring resistance. However, the mechanism of resistance in GLG 84038 and GL 84099 were primarily additive in nature while that in ICC 1468, dominance as well as dominance × dominance interactions were more important than additive gene action.

    Notes: Abstract We provide a formalism for comparing the average execution time of distributed protocols in a manner independent of the properties of the network on which the protocols are executed. The formalism takes into account computation time, the time to transfer information, the time spent by a site waiting to synchronize and the overlap among them. We define transformations on protocols which may change the synchronization structure, the information transferred or the amount of local computation. We show that if a sequence of such transformations can be applied to a protocol to obtain another protocol, then the final protocol runs at least as fast as the initial protocol. Different sets of tranformations give rise to different notions of comparison. We develop two such notions and explore their properties. We also give results which relate our notion of protocol transformation to transformational techniques for protocol design.
