Notes: Abstract The sensitization of a SnO2-liquid junction cell with highly concentrated dyes was investigated. The dyes used were Crystal Violet, Methyl Violet B, Malachite Green, Pararosaniline, and Rhodamine B. Anomalous or positive photovoltages were obtained in the system when Fe(CN) 6 3− was added. The performance of the photovoltaic cells showed an open-circuit photovoltage,V oc, of 175 mV, a short-circuit photocurrent,I sc, of 12 μA, and a fill factor of 0.42. The action spectra resembled the absorption spectra of the aggregated dyes. A D-D mechanism is introduced to explain the anomaly of the photovoltage of the SnO2 electrode sensitized with the dyes. This behaviour is relevant to the practical usage of such photo-electrochemical cells and merits further investigation.

Notes: Three polystyrene (PS)-polyoxyethylene (POE) block copolymers were synthesized: S-114 and S-123 as copolymers of POE-PS-POE type, and S-61-10 as that of type. Although the copolymers themselves did not remove nonionic surfactant, polyethylene glycol mono-p-nonylphenyl ether (NP, n = 10), in water, the copolymers, which were supported on activated alumina, removed the surfactant. The removal rates of NP by the copolymers supported on the alumina were compared. The effect of initial concentration of NP and the effect of the amount of supported copolymer on the amount of NP removed were studied. The Freuindlich adsorption isotherm was observed between the residual concentration of NP and the amount of NP removed. In the three copolymers supported on the alumina, the amount of removal per unit mass was the greatest for the S-61-10.

Notes: Copolymers with a quaternary ammonium salt side group have been prepared from vinylbenzyl-cetyldimethylammonium chloride and acrylonitrile and their antibacterial activity has been examined with Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli. Growth inhibitory effect has been found to increase with the increase in the quaternary ammonium salt concentration in the copolymer. The effect is small on gram-negative bacteria and large on gram-positive bacteria.

Notes: Styrene-methyl vinyl ketone copolymers, methyl methacrylate-methyl vinyl ketone copolymers, and styrene-methyl vinyl ketone-2,6-di-t-butyl-4-acroylaminomethylphenol terpolymers as well as polystyrene and polypropylene have been weathered either by artificial irradiation or by outdoor exposure. The weathered products were analyzed using GC mass spectrometry, liquid chromatography, IR, UV, NMR, and wet analytical methods. Most of the weathered products proved to be low molecular weight polymers with various functional groups, and many low molecular weight compounds were identified. From the degradates of styrene copolymers, acetone, acetic acid, acetophenone, benzoic acid, formic acid, phenol, benzaldehyde, etc., were identified; from the degradates of methyl methacrylate copolymers, acetone, acetic acid, methanol, methyl methacrylate, methyl vinyl ketone, etc., were identified; and from the degradates of polypropylene, aliphatic acids up to propionic were analyzed. In many cases, the most abundant species was acetic acid. From polypropylene weathered outdoors for two years, 1.2 μl/g acetic acid was obtained. The degradates of styrene copolymers were found to contain fluorescent substances.

Notes: Copolymerization of sodium vinyl benzyl sulfonate (VBS) or vinyl benzyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (VBQ) with acrylonitrile (AN) gave polyelectrolytes of preferable solution viscosities. The blending of these two copolymers in N,N-dimethyl formamide (DMF) produced polymer complexes with ionic linkages, of which the following properties were examined. The maximum in the tan δ temperature was increased by complex formation. Freundlich-type dye adsorption and much better dyeability than on polyacrylonitrile was observed. Electric resistivity decreased with the introduction of ionic moiety. Permeability of water increased with the number of ionic sites. Homogeneous films could be cast from DMF and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solutions.

Notes: A few cellulose derivatives were prepared by the reaction of chlorodeoxycellulose (CDC) with ethylenediamine (ED), thiourea, thiosemicarbazide, thioacetamide, and others. These derivatives were found to be able to remove mercuric ions to an extent greater than 99% from a 10 ppm aqueous solution of mercuric chloride. For example, thiocellulose obtained by reacting CDC with thiourea and subsequently hydrolyzing it showed such good removal in the batch and continuous removal tests which involved passing the solution through a column packed with this cellulose derivatives.

Notes: Photopolymerization of styrene and methyl methacrylate has been examined for twelve metal β-diketonates. Mn(acac)3 and Co(acac)3 have a large sensitizing effect. In the photopolymerization of styrene sensitized by Co(acac)3, conversion increases linearly with time up to 10% conversion. Since sensitization is high in the wavelength region of charge transfer absorption and low in ligand field region, photoreduction of Co(III) to Co(II) is suggested during the formation of initiating radical. With the use of Mn(acac)3, photopolymerization rate of styrene was very high. The reduction of Mn(III) to Mn(II) was ascertained by ESR if 1-methylstyrene was added as a radical scavenger. Without any radical scavenger, however, Mn(III) did not undergo reduction in benzene solution. In both cases of Co(acac)3 and Mn(acac)3, the initiation is by acetylacetonyl radical dissociated from the chelate. The central metal ion is simultaneously reduced. The initiation process is exactly the same as the thermal initiation.
