    Description: Soil bacteria are key to ecosystem function and maintenance of soil fertility. Leveraging associations of current geographic distributions of bacteria with historic climate, we predict that soil bacterial diversity will increase across the majority (∼75%) of the Tibetan Plateau and northern North America if bacterial communities equilibrate with existing climatic conditions. This prediction is possible because the current distributions of soil bacteria have stronger correlations with climate from ∼50 years ago than with current climate. This lag is likely associated with the time it takes for soil properties to adjust to changes in climate. The predicted changes are location specific and differ across bacterial taxa, including some bacteria that are predicted to have reductions in their distributions. These findings illuminate the widespread potential of climate change to influence belowground diversity and the importance of considering bacterial communities when assessing climate impacts on terrestrial ecosystems.

    Notes: We present a critical theoretical study of electronic properties of silicon nanoclusters, in particular the roles played by symmetry, relaxation, and hydrogen passivation on the stability, the gap states and the energy gap of the system using the order N [O(N)] nonorthogonal tight-binding molecular dynamics and the local analysis of electronic structure. We find that for an unrelaxed cluster with its atoms occupying the regular tetrahedral network, the presence of undistorted local bonding configuration is sufficient for the appearance of a small clean energy gap. However, the energy gap of the unrelaxed cluster does not start at the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO). In fact, between the HOMO and the lower edge of the energy gap, localized dangling bond states are found. With hydrogen passivation, the localized dangling bond states are eliminated, resulting in a wider and clean energy gap. Relaxation of these hydrogen passivated clusters does not alter either the structure or the energy gap appreciably. However, if the silicon clusters are allowed to relax first, the majority of the dangling bonds are eliminated but additional defect states due to bond distortion appear, making the energy gap dirty. Hydrogen passivation of these relaxed clusters will further eliminate most of the remnant dangling bonds but no appreciable effect on the defect states associated with bond distortions will take place, thus still resulting in a dirty gap. For the hydrogen-passivated SiN nanoclusters with no bond distortion and no overall symmetry, we have studied the variation of the energy gap as a function of size of the cluster for N in the range of 80〈N〈6000. The dependence of the energy gap on the size shows similar behavior to that for silicon nanoclusters with no bond distortion but possessing overall symmetry. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Pleurotus sajor-caju, strain Pl-27, produces manganese-dependent peroxidase (MnP) and laccase, but not lignin peroxidase, when grown on a defined medium with glucose as sole carbon source. MnP activity was detected in fungal cultures supplemented with both high (26 mM-N) and low (2.6 mM-N) nutrient nitrogen although higher specific activity values were recorded under the latter conditions. Conversely, laccase production was not influenced by nutrient nitrogen levels under the growth conditions adopted. Both the titre and time of appearence of MnP were also affected by the concentration of Mn in the culture medium with highest enzyme levels recorded in cultures supplemented with 15 ppm Mn. Two MnP and five laccase isoforms were identified by FPLC and gel electrophoresis.

    Notes: Abstract We present a vacation model which can be used as a component of the type of polling system encountered in a fair share scheduler. Consider two queues in tandem attended by one server. The primary queue Q p, which has an infinite buffer, has a preemptive priority over the secondary queue Q s which has a finite buffer. Jobs which complete service at the primary queue will go into the secondary queue for another service with a probability p. The server visits Q s for a maximum of T units of time. After visiting for T units of time or after Q s becomes empty, whichever occurs first, the server goes on a vacation. The duration of this vacation has a phase type distribution. The vacation can also be interrupted in order to attend to the jobs in Q p. The resulting Markov chain describing this system is of the QBD type. We show that the resulting R matrix associated with this Markov chain has a very special structure which reduces to the solution of a smaller dimension matrix. We then show how to obtain the key performance measures for this system. Of interest is the approach used for obtaining the waiting time distribution. Some numerical examples are also presented.

    Notes: The microstructures, mechanical properties and oxidation resistance of the refractory Nb-silicide-based composites have been investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), compression tests and high-temperature oxidation experiments. The results showed that 1773K/100h heat-treatment was an optimum processing for acquiring equilibrium Nb solid solution and silicides microstructure. In the binary Nb-Si system, the microstructure consisted ofcontinuous Nb5Si3 equilibrium matrix and dispersed Nb particles, while in the theNb-Ti-Cr-Al-Si-(Hf) multicomponent system, there are two typical microstructures, i.e., a two-phase structure of β (Nb solid solution)+D81 Nb5Si3-type silicide in the alloys with the Si+Al content (15at.% and 6at.%, respectively), and a three-phase structure of β+D81 Nb5Si3-type + D88 Ti5Si3-type silicides in the alloys with lower Si+Al content (10at.% and 8at.%, respectively). The results of compression tests showed that all alloys display high strength at both room and high temperatures, only a slight decrease in compression properties occured for Nb-Ti-Cr-Al-Si alloys, comparing to the binary Nb-Si in-situ composites. This type of alloys possesses good high temperature strengths up to at least 1473K. The results of high-temperature oxidation experiments showed that the oxidation rates of the alloys with Ti, Cr, Al and Hf addition were at least one order of magnitude lower than those of the Nb-Si binary alloys

    Notes: The mechanical properties of B/Al composite were measured at room temperature before and after thermal-mechanical cycling (TMC) in the temperature interval from –125℃ to 125℃ under constant stress of 30 MPa. The effects of TMC on microstructure and tensile fracture behavior of B/Al composite were studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The fiber / matrix interfaces were degraded during TMC, the extent ofwhich was enhanced with increasing the cycles, causing a measurable decrease of stageⅠmodulus of the B/Al composite. The TMC induced the dislocation generation in the aluminum matrix and the dislocation density increased with increasing the cycles. The tensile strength of the composites increased with the cycles in the early stage of TMC, but subsequently decreased after further TMC. The interfaces in the B/Al composite changed from the strongly-bonded toward the appropriately-bonded, and then to the weakly–bonded ones with increasing the cycles
