    Notes: With a newly-developed technique, pulsed high energy density plasma (PHEDP), TiN, TiCN, and (Ti,Al)N coatings were deposited onto silicon nitride and cemented carbide cutting tools. The structures of these coatings were systematically investigated in this paper. The average surface roughness(Ra) of the coated tools were ranged in 20~150 nm. The smooth surface of coated tools means that the coatings are promising candidate for cutting tools of high precision and it is in favor of reducing the fiction coefficients and flank wear of tools. The coating thickness varied, in the range of 3~20 µm, with the deposition conditions of the shot number of pulsed plasma, and the voltages between the inner and outer electrodes of the coaxial gun. The coating has a densified structure compared to the substrate structure and almost no pores and cracks exist in the coating surface. The grain sizes of the coating were small (〈100nm), much finer than those of the substrate (〉2 µm). Except for TiN-Si3N4 system, no apparent columnar grain structure as presented predominantly in typical vapor deposited coatings was observed. In fact, an equiaxed structure was presented, due to the pulsed mode of plasma bombardment and solid solution strengthening of C or Al into TiN lattices, resulting in disruption, through renucleation, of epitaxy on individual columns. A continuous and densified interface was observed. All thesecharacteristics in structures promised an excellent performance of the coated tools

    Notes: ZTA (alumina toughened by 20 wt.% zirconia), hot-pressed silicon nitride (with totally 10 wt.% Y2O3 and Al2O3 as additives) and TZP (pressureless-sintered yttria stabilized zirconia) ceramics were implanted by various doses (5 × 1016 ions/cm2 ~ 1 × 1018 ions/cm2) of Ti, Zr, and Cr ions with a MEVVA (metal vapor vacuum arc) source implanter. The bending strength of these ceramics was investigated. It was discovered that, for different ceramics, different behaviors were presented with the same doses of implantation ions. For alumina and zirconia ceramics, the bending strength increased with increasing implantation doses of Ti and Zr ions, but decreased with high dose of Cr ions. For silicon nitrideceramics, however, the bending strength originally increased with smaller doses of metals implanted, and decreased with higher doses of metals of Ti, Zr, and Cr ions. The different behaviors are correlated to the different variations in compositions and microstructures of ceramics after ion implantation

    Notes: 0-3 cement based piezoelectric composites were fabricated using sulphoaluminate cement as matrix by compressing technique method. The effects of strontium ferrite content on the piezoelectric properties, dielectric properties and acoustic impedance of the composites were studied. The results show that the piezoelectric strain constant d33 and piezoelectric voltage constant g33 of the composites increase gradually with increaing strontium ferrite content. When the strontium ferrite mass fraction is 0.4%, both of the piezoelectric strain constant d33 and piezoelectric voltage constant g33 of the composite have the maximum value, and the values are 16.6pC•N-1 and 31.4mV•m•N-1, which are 35% and 19% larger than that of the composite without strontium ferrite doped, respectively. With the strontium ferrite content increase, both of the dielectric constant εr and the dielectric loss tanδ of the composites increase. With the addition of strontium ferrite the acoustic impedance Z increases, but there is no obvious relation between the strontium ferrite content and Z

    Notes: HIP (hot isostatic pressed) high-purity alumina was modified by Ti-ion implantation in aMEVVA (Metal Vapor Vacuum Arc) implanter. The samples were implanted by Ti ions with nominaldoses 5×1016 to 1×1018 ions/cm2 under ambient temperature. The effects of titanium implantation and theion dose implanted on the microstructures and mechanical properties of the ceramics were studied. Afterimplanted by Ti ions, the maximum nanohardness of the as-implanted ceramics were increased about20%; the bending strength were increased about 22%; the life of the alumina cutting tools were about 2times longer than before. The result showed that all the factors of the improvement of the ceramic surfacestates played an important role on the mechanical properties after implantation

    Notes: The phase composition of (1-x)BaO·xSrO·0.7TiO2·0.3Nb2O5 (BSTN) composite ceramics wasanalyzed by XRD, and the effect of Sr/Ba ratio on the dielectric properties of BSTN was investigated byimpedance analyzer. The results showed that any sample with different x value contained two phases-theperovskite phase and the tungsten bronze phase. The dielectric constants of BSTN basically decreasedwhile the tanδ increased with the increase in x value. Both dielectric constant and tanδ decreased with theapplied frequency increased for the same x value. There were two Curie points for BSTN compositeceramics. The first one belonging to the perovskite phase decreased with the increase in x value, but thesecond one belonging to the tungsten bronze phase kept almost constant at about 300˚C

    Notes: Equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) is one of the most promising processes tofabricate ultra-fine grained materials. The material deformation is affected by die geometry, materialbehavior, friction and back pressure. The optimum back pressure for 1100Al during ECAP wasstudied. The effect of back pressure on deformation behavior, effective strain and deformation loadwere analyzed by using finite element software. The results show that the corner gap between thebillet and the die in the external part of the deformation zone decreases and even disappears withthe increase of back pressure, which can produce more uniform and larger strain in the billet. Thedeformation load enhances with the increase of back pressure. From the simulation results, it can befound out that the optimum back pressure for 1100Al pressed in the die of Φ=90° is about 30MPa

    Notes: Abstract The wind speed distribution with height is analysed by using hourly data for a full year recorded at 6 levels of a 164 m tower at Nanjing. A statistical error analysis shows that power law and logarithmic law are best applicable when the wind is strong. For the height range from 16 to 164 m, the power law represents the actual speed distribution better than does the logarithmic law.

    Notes: Peptides representing both loop and the sixth transmembrane regions of the α-factor receptor of Saccharomyces cerevisiae were synthesized by solid-phase procedures and purified to near homogeneity. CD, nmr, and modeling analysis indicated that in aqueous media the first extracellular loop peptide E1(107-125), the third intracellular loop peptide I3(231-243), and the carboxyl terminus peptide I4(350-372) were mostly disordered. In contrast, the second extracellular loop peptide E2(191-206) assumed a well-defined structure in aqueous medium and the sixth transmembrane domain peptide receptor M6(252-269, C252A) was highly helical in trifluoroethanol/water (4:1), exhibiting a kink at Pro258. A synthetic peptide containing a sequence similar to that of the sixth transmembrane domain of a constitutively active α-factor receptor M6(252-269, C252A, P258L) in which Leu replaces Pro258 exhibited significantly different biophysical properties than the wild-type sequence. In particular, this peptide had very low solubility and gave CD resembling that of a β-sheet structure in hexafluoroacetone/water (1:1) whereas the wild-type peptide was partially helical under identical conditions. These results would be consistent with the hypothesis that the constitutive activity of the mutant receptor is linked to a conformational change in the sixth transmembrane domain. The study of the receptor segments also indicate that peptides corresponding to loops of the α-factor receptor do not appear to assume turn structures. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Description: Past global climate changes had strong regional expression. To elucidate their spatio-temporal pattern, we reconstructed past temperatures for seven continental-scale regions during the past one to two millennia. The most coherent feature in nearly all of the regional temperature reconstructions is a long-term cooling trend, which ended late in the nineteenth century. At multi-decadal to centennial scales, temperature variability shows distinctly different regional patterns, with more similarity within each hemisphere than between them. There were no globally synchronous multi-decadal warm or cold intervals that define a worldwide Medieval Warm Period or Little Ice Age, but all reconstructions show generally cold conditions between ad 1580 and 1880, punctuated in some regions by warm decades during the eighteenth century. The transition to these colder conditions occurred earlier in the Arctic, Europe and Asia than in North America or the Southern Hemisphere regions. Recent warming reversed the long-term cooling; during the period ad 1971–2000, the area-weighted average reconstructed temperature was higher than any other time in nearly 1,400 years.
