Notes: Abstract Some real and interval algorithms for the numerical solution of a class of nonlinear algebraic equations are described. These algorithms are based upon the symmetric single-step [2] and Newton [10], [11], [8] methods. Convergence theorems and numerical results which illustrate the effectiveness of the algorithms are given.

Notes: Abstract In autumn, aphids reared on the opposite side of a sycamore leaf from an aggregation ofPeriphyllus acericola nymphs are heavier than aphids reared on uninfested leaves. Groups ofP. testudinaceus nymphs do not enhance the growth of aphids reared opposite.

Notes: Abstract Sipha kurdjumovi Mordwilko prefers to settle on the concave upper surfaces of the leaves of barley seedlings, and inserts its stylets mainly through stomata to gain access to and pierce the phloem elements. Stomata are absent from the stems of barley seedlings but are present on the leaf, more abundantly on the upper surface. Phloem elements are closer to the lower than to the upper leaf surface. Reversing the curvature of a leaf results in significantly more aphids settling on the undersurface of the leaf. However, the aphid still does not show a preference for the lower surface even though this is now the concave surface. Offered flattened leaves of barley, the aphid prefers to settle on the upper surface, which is more prominently ridged than the lower surface. However, when allowed to settle on flattened leaves of Poa annua L., where there are no pronounced ridges, S. kurdjumovi settles in equal numbers on both surfaces of the leaf.

Notes: Abstract Relationships between sedimentary diatom assemblages and lakewater pH values from 36 lakes and experimentally acidified Lake 223, in the Experimental Lakes Area, were analyzed. The relationships were used to assign diatoms in the 36 lakes into pH preference groupings. Based on their regional distribution Cyclotella stelligera and Tabellaria flocculosa strain IIIp were categorized as pH indifferent, in comparison to other areas were they have been categorized as acidophilic. Two models were then applied to calculate transfer coefficients which were used to calculate diatom-inferred pH values for Lake 223. Index B and a multiple linear regression of the pH groupings yielded similar correlations (r2 0.82 and 0.84 respectively, p=0.0001). The multiple linear regression inferred a pH of 5.36 for acidified Lake 223 compared to a measured pH of 5.46.

Notes: [Auszug] IT is well known from the work of Compton and others that X-rays can be reflected at glancing angles up to about 40′, and Holweck claims to have observed reflection at 16°.2. We have obtained evidence of reflection of X-rays of about 50 A. from glass and quartz up to glancing angles of ...

Notes: Summary A female infant with multiple congenital anomalies is presented. Cytogenetic study revealed the presence of a de novo, supernumerary, small telocentric chromosome exhibiting the banding pattern of the short arm of chromosome no. 10 [47,XX,+10p(pter→cen)]. Her clinical features were compatible with the 10p trisomy syndrome. Hexokinase (HK-1) activity was elevated in the patient's erythrocytes, which is consistent with an assignment of HK-1 to 10pter→cen10. The absence of a gene dosage effect for inorganic pyrophosphatase (PP) in this study indicates exclusion of PP from 10pter →cen10, and therefore implies a regional assignment of cen10→10q24 for PP. Adenosine kinase (ADK) activity was within control limits, which is consistent with exclusion of ADK from 10pter→cen10.
