Notes: Summary A direct colorimetric method for the determination of the trivalent chromium ion is described. This utilises the coloured complex formed with Complexone IV (“Chenta Acid”). There is no interference from dichromate, and trivalent chromium can therefore be determined in the presence of the latter ion. The complex obeys Beer's Law over the range 4–80 μg/ml, and the colour is stable for one week.

Notes: Abstract Immunoblot detection of antibody against 47 KD cytoplasmic antigen ofCandida albicans was evaluated in diagnosis of invasive candidiasis and compared to whole cell agglutination and gel diffusion tests for detection of anticandidal antibody in 64 patients. The patients included 17 with culture proved candidemia, 34 with significant candiduria (more than 10,000 colony forming units per ml of urine) and 13 with nonsignificant candiduria. Antibody against 47 KD antigen was found to be the best indicator for diagnosis of invasive candidiasis even in patients with malignancy. The sensitivity of this procedure was 82.4%, specificity 86.7%, positive predictive value 77.8%, negative predictive value 89.7% and efficacy 85.1%. The gel diffusion procedure lacked in sensitivity whereas whole cell agglutination lacked in specificity. Detection of antibody against 47 KD antigen proved to be a valuable adjunct in the diagnosis of invasive candidiasis.

Notes: Abstract A computation of the life time of positrons as well as the angular distribution of the resulting gamma pair for polycrystalline krypton and xenon has been made. The calculations are based on the technique employed by Salvadori and Carbotte for the case of solid argon. The field seen by the positrons is constructed from the charge densities derived from Herman-Skillman wave functions. The positron wave functions are obtained using the Wigner-Seitz approximation. For electrons Herman-Skillman wave functions have been used. The computed distributions, when the effects of correlation are ignored, are wider than the experimental ones. The calculated values for the mean lives of positrons for krypton and xenon are 2.2×10−9 sec and 2.7×10−9 sec, respectively, and that for xenon is, as usual, longer than the measured value of 0.43×10−9 sec. Effects of electronpositron correlations on the angular distribution and the life time have been calculated for the case of krypton. When these corrections are taken into account, the life time of positrons in krypton is reduced by a factor of about eight and the angular distribution shows a slight narrowing.

Notes: Abstract Hydrocarbon group type analysis is important in all conversion processes and in preparation of feed for these conversion processes so as to learn the selectivity of the different type of catalysts for product yield and quality. The use of the Mark 5 Iatroscan detector and the method reported here allowed for a rapid and quantitative hydrocarbon group type analysis of petroleum residues without prior separation of asphaltenes. SARA type analyses of petroleum residues have been performed by a three stage development using n-hexane, toluene and DCM (95%):MeOH (5%). The standard deviation and coefficient of variation in repeated measurements by this method were as low as 0.65 wt% or less and 3.5 wt% or less, respectively. The time required for analysis of 10 samples could be as short as 90 min.

Notes: Abstract Intracellular free Ca2+ concentration has been shown to be elevated in platelets of patients with essential hypertension. This study was designed to characterize Ca2+-pump activity of the platelet membranes (surface and intracellular) in these patients. A double-blind study was carried out. Untreated and treated (on R-blockers) essential hypertensives were studied in comparison with normotensive control subjects. First degree blood relatives of essential hypertensives were also studied. The Ca2+-activation kinetics of the enzyme showed a significant decrease in the Vmax. (for the plasma- and intracellular membranes) and Km (for the intracellular membranes) in the essential hypertensive patients. Increased platelet membrane cholesterol content was observed in these patients. Lowered Ca2+-efflux by Ca2+-ATPase may lead to elevated intracellular free Ca2+-levels in platelets of essential hypertensives. A lowered Ca2+-ATPase activity may emerge as a marker for essential hypertension.

Notes: Abstract Membrane abnormalities in essential hypertensives (EH) are well known. The respiratory burst enzyme, NADPH oxidase is located in the cell membrane of the neutrophil (PMNLs) and its activity is important in generation of oxygen derived free radical (OFR). Recently OFR have been implicated in vascular changes in variety of conditions. An attempt was made to delineate the status of OFR and antioxidants in EH. Ten, age and sex-matched, healthy controls (GpI) and 26 untreated EH (Gp IIA mild-8, Gp IIB Moderate-8, Gp IIC Severe-10) were studied. After clinical examination and basic laboratory evaluation of subjects, neutrophils isolated from their blood were studied. Chemiluminescence (CL) emitted by PMNLs after stimulation was measured (counts/min) in a luminometer and was taken as measure of OFR production and thereby of NADPH oxidase activity. The levels of antioxidants, super oxide dismutase (SOD) and reduced glutathione (GSH), were also estimated. Chemiluminescence was increased significantly (p 〈 0.01) in Gp IIC (243.04 ± 24.9 × 103 counts per minute) as compared to Gp IIA (2.80 ± 1.87), Gp IIB (34.54 ± 30.24) and Gp I (0.52 ± 0.15) and SOD was reduced significantly (p 〈 0.05) in all EH (Gp IIA 3.9 ± 0.3 units per mg protein, Gp IIB 3.5 ± 0.3 and Gp IIC 3.12 ± 0.3) as compared to controls (4.1 ± 0.2). Similarly GSH was reduced (p 〈 0.05) in EH (Gp IIA 11.2 ± 1.7 mg per gm protein, Gp IIB 8.5 ± 1.1 and Gp IIC 6.6 ± 0.3) as compared to Gp I (13.5 ± 2.5). In essential hypertensives a curvilinear positive correlation was obtained between CL and both systolic (r = 0.7077, p 〈 0.01) and diastolic (r = 0.7965, p 〈 0.01) blood pressure. A significant inverse correlation (p 〈 0.05) was obtained between systolic and diastolic blood pressure on one hand and GSH and SOD on the other. Thus PMNLs of EH have increased emission of CL and depletion of antioxidants. The results indicate that in essential hypertension increased membrane NADPH oxidase activity is present.

Notes: Abstract Iron Mössbauer spectroscopy has been performed on 38 residues of hydroliquefaction of the French bituminous Freyming coal, without and with added iron based catalysts. 56 to 94 % of the area of each spectrum was occupied by 2, 3, 4 or 5 sextets of Fe1−xS, either at 295 K or at 78 K or at 4 K. Values of H at 295 K are proposed: 299, 283, 268, 254, 242 and 228 kOe, ±3 kOe, associated with δ(α-Fe)=0.72±0.02 mm/s. The vacancies responsible for the values of H are likely to be randomly distributed. The best accuracy on the relative intensities cannot ensure a precise determination of the overall stoichiometry, so that a better knowledge of the samples is given by the distribution of the Fe sites.

Notes: Abstract A foremost general contraction condition is introduced to prove the existence of fixed points for a self-mapping in a complete metric space whose orbital diametral functions are closed. This condition covers not only the Kannan type but also covers Reich, and Hardy and Roger's type contractive conditions. An example is given in its support.
