Description / Table of Contents:
Notes:
The reaction of phenol, o-, m-, and p-cresol with formaldehyde was studied by means of differential scanning calorimetry in alkaline medium within the temperature range of 340 to 373 K. The reaction products were separated by means of high-performance liquid chromatography and subsequently analyzed by infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The number of addition products appearing in the reaction mixture is five for phenol, three for o-cresol, seven for m-cresol, and two for p-cresol. During the reaction, some high-molecular products are also formed: they have not been identified. On the basis of these data, it was possible to set up tentative reaction schemes. Furthermore, the concentrations of addition products were determined as functions of time which allowed kinetic analysis of individual reaction systems.
