Abstract The study deals with the different kinds of the configuration of the front slopes of cuestas in the Leine-Weser hills. There are differences as to the profile of the front slope, the maximum slope inclination, the distribution and extent of the concave, convex and maximum segment in particular, as well as to the shape and distribution of the constituent elements of the slopes. In addition to field research an orometrical-statistical analysis of slope profiles is applied in order to find out characteristic types of cuesta slopes. These different types are associated with distinct cliff-makers. The alteration of the front slopes of cuestas caused by climatic change is-among other things-pointed out. The following types have to be discerned: very smooth, almost straight front slopes representing Tertiary periods of planation, so-called “ramp-slopes”, and very steep concave front slopes which owe their present shape to steepening processes during Pleistocene periglacial conditions. The Holocene shaping tends towards a flattening of the front slope of cuestas.
