    Abstract: This book gives an overall analysis of the current knowledge status about structures, functions, utilization for German Baltic coast ecosystems. The main focus of this book is on the aquatic area, but land/sea interactions as well as river outfalls are included as well. Characteristic for this book is the inclusion of social science aspects. Approximately one third of its extent will be about the ecosystem services. In this segment the results of the last 6 years are presented in which a comprehensive quantification of the social relevance of ecosystems was carried out covering the entire area of the German Baltic Sea. This part builds directly on the results of scientific investigations and are in relation to social ideals. The assessment will not only be economically and ethically but also the mechanisms that are used for the valorisation of the ecosystem services will be evaluated. Both sub-areas, the classic natural science part as well as the part of social science aspects, deal with the changes caused by increasing anthropogenic influence and social (including demographic) changes. This will be among others in the sense of an exemplary historical outline. The final chapter of the synthesis therefore not only presents a summary of the level of knowledge gained and a deduction of the research needs. It further contains a presentation of the application aspects resulting from the analysis of the social relevance gained from basic scientific research. The book is aimed at scientists (and students) of natural, life and social sciences, analysing functioning and structures of coastal ecosystems with regard to sustainable use and nature protection, including aspects of coastal protection. Besides, it is thought to become a reference for all levels of decision makers and stakeholders in coastal and marine management of the Baltic and North Sea region, providing also a blueprint for system analysis respecting for societal as well as biological aspects world-wide.

    Description / Table of Contents: This is the first comprehensive science-based textbook on the biology and ecology of the Baltic Sea, one of the world’s largest brackish water bodies. The aim of this book is to provide students and other readers with knowledge about the conditions for life in brackish water, the functioning of the Baltic Sea ecosystem and its environmental problems and management. It highlights biological variation along the unique environmental gradients of the brackish Baltic Sea Area (the Baltic Sea, Belt Sea and Kattegat), especially those in salinity and climate. The first part of the book presents the challenges for life processes and ecosystem dynamics that result from the Baltic Sea’s highly variable recent geological history and geographical isolation. The second part explains interactions between organisms and their environment, including biogeochemical cycles, patterns of biodiversity, genetic diversity and evolution, biological invasions and physiological adaptations. In the third part, the subsystems of the Baltic Sea ecosystem - the pelagic zone, the sea ice, the deep soft sea beds, the phytobenthic zone, the sandy coasts, and estuaries and coastal lagoons - are treated in detail with respect to the structure and function of communities and habitats and consequences of natural and anthropogenic constraints, such as climate change, discharges of nutrients and hazardous substances. Finally, the fourth part of the book discusses monitoring and ecosystem-based management to deal with contemporary and emerging threats to the ecosystem’s health.

    Notes: The photosynthetic performance of the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 exposed to intermittent light was studied by measuring oxygen evolution, respiration and the fluorescence parameters for maximum efficiency of excitation energy capture by photosystem II (PSII) reaction centres (Fv/Fm), PSII quantum yield (ΔF/Fm1) and non-photochemical quenching (NPQ). Cultures were pre-acclimated to constant light conditions. Block and sinusoidal light regimes were tested using four photon-flux densities (PFDs) applied in light/dark intervals of 1:1, 5:5 and 10:10 min. Light use was higher under the sinusoidal light regime compared with the block regime. The accumulated gross photosynthesis of the cyanobacterium was lower under intermittent light conditions compared with predictions from the photosynthesis-irradiance curve (PI curve). The respiration rates were similar for all light/dark intervals tested. However, the respiration slightly increased with increasing oxygen production for both block and sinusoidal light regime. NPQ, ΔF/Fm′ and Fv/Fm depended on the PFD rather than on the duration of the light/dark intervals tested, and there was no detected influence of the two applied light regimes.

The unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas acidophila accumulates in a thin phytoplankton layer in the hypolimnion (deep chlorophyll maximum, DCM) of an extremely acidic lake (Lake 111, pH 2.6, Lusatia, Germany), in which the underwater light spectrum is distorted and red-shifted.2. Chlamydomonas acidophila exhibited a significantly higher absorption efficiency and a higher cellular chlorophyll b content when incubated in the red shifted underwater light of Lake 111 than in a typical, blue-green dominated, light spectrum.3. Chlamydomonas acidophila has excellent low light acclimation properties (increased chlorophyll b content, increased oxygen yield and a low light saturation point for photosynthesis) that support survival of the species in the low light climate of the DCM.4. In situ acclimation to the DCM under low light and temperature decreased maximum photosynthetic rate in autotrophic C. acidophila cultures, whereas the presence of glucose under these conditions enhanced photosynthetic efficiency and capacity.5. The adaptive abilities of C. acidophila to light and temperature shown in this study, in combination with the absence of potent competitors because of low lake pH, most probably enable the unusual dominance of the green alga in the DCM of Lake 111.

    Notes: Abstract: The influence of intermittent high-light dosage on Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 with respect to oxygen evolution capacity, fluorescence yield and carotenoid pigment pattern was investigated, using high-light- and low-light-adapted cultures. The results showed that this cyanobacterium was able to survive high light stress for a full day if this stress was applied on and off with intermittently presented recovery periods in darkness. Enhanced respiratory activity in the high-light adapted cells was detected and this may be an important factor in preventing photodamage under high light stress. Cyanobacterial photosynthetic and respiratory electron transfer pathways are both present within the same membrane, and share common electron carriers. The role of respiratory activity in preventing overexcitation of photosystem 2 is discussed with regard to cyanobacterial ecology.

    Notes: Abstract Salt loading of 314 mmol l−1 NaCl led to optimal growth and photosynthesis in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803. In 77K fluorescence emission spectroscopy a new peak was found at 660 nm in salt adapted cells, in addition to the peaks of chlorophyll-a at fluorescence levels (F) 685 and 725 nm. Futhermore the ratios of F685/F725 and of photosystem 2/photosystem 1 are reduced in salt loaded cells in comparison to control cells.

    Notes: Abstract To determine longitudinal changes in phytoplankton composition and biomass in the Warnow River (Germany), single water parcels were followed during their downstream transport in August and October 1996 and April 1997. In summer, the phytoplankton assemblage was dominated by centric diatom and cyanobacteria species. Stephanodiscus hantzschii, Pseudanabaena limnetica, Planktothrix agardhii and Aulacoseira granulata var. angustissima were the most frequent species. In autumn, small centric diatoms dominated the whole river course. Irrespective of the season, in the fluvial lakes of the upper river, a substantial increase of phytoplankton biomass was observed. Shallow upstream river stretches were associated with large biomass losses. In the deep, slow flowing lower regions, total biomass remained constant. Longitudinal changes in biomass reflected downstream variations in flow velocity and river morphology. Cyanobacteria, cryptophytes and diatom species were subjected to large biomass losses along fast flowing, shallow river sections, whereas chlorophytes were favoured. Diatoms and cryptophytes benefited from low flow velocity and increased water depth in the downstream river. Changes in water depth and flow velocity have been found as key factors that cause the longitudinal differences in phytoplankton composition and biomass in small rivers.

    Notes: Abstract Ultrastructural evidence is presented for the presence of plastid-like organelles inToxoplasma gondii, Sarcocystis muris, Babesia ovis, andPlasmodium falciparum. In addition, it was shown that merozoites ofT. gondii contain protochlorophyllidaea and traces of chlorophylla bound to the photosynthetic reaction centers I PS I and PS II. ApsbA gene was isolated from merozoites ofS. muris by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Partial sequencing of the PCR product revealed that the herbicide-binding region is highly conserved. Therefore, it is likely that the sensitivity of apicomplexans to the herbicide toltrazuril depends on the interaction of the herbicide with the D1 protein of the photosynthetic reaction center of the parasite's organelles.

    Notes: Abstract A salt shock of 684mm NaCl reduced RNA and DNA synthesis to about 30% of the control level inSynechocystis. DNA synthesis recovered to the initial level within 4 h, while for recovery of RNA synthesis about 8 h were necessary. In cells completely adapted to different salt concentrations (from 171 to 1026mm NaCl), a continuous decrease in the RNA content with increasing salt concentrations up to 684mm NaCl was found, whereas the lowest DNA content was measured around 342mm NaCl, i.e., the salinity at which maximal growth occurred. With the uracil and thymidien incorporation technique, maxima in DNA and RNA synthesis were detected in control cells. Comparing these rates with nucleic acid synthesis rates calculated from the contents of DNA and RNA and the growth rates indicated that adaptation to 1026mm NaCl seemed to lead to an increased RNA turnover inSynechocystis. Analysis of protein synthesis with35S-methionine labeling showed alterations in salt-adapated cells ofSynechocystis. At least three proteins (20.5, 25.8, and 35.8 kDa) were synthesized with highest rates at salinities leading to maximal growth, the synthesis of nine proteins (12.5, 16.9, 19.2, 22.2, 24.7, 28.5, 30.5, 50.3, and 63.5 kDa) increased and that of several other proteins decreased with increasing salinity; but only three proteins (12.5, 22.2, and 30.5 kDa) accumulated under these conditions. The adaptation ofSynechocystis to enhanced salt concentrations led also to increased contents of glucosylglycerol, glycogen, and significant amounts of K+ as well as Na+ ions.
