Abstract: This book investigates the added value that satellite technologies and remote sensing could provide for a more sustainable mapping, monitoring and management of heritage sites, be it for purposes of regular maintenance or for risk mitigation in case of natural or man-caused hazards. One of the major goals of this book is to provide a clear overview on policy perspectives, regarding both space policy as well as heritage policy, and to provide possible suggestions for common ground of these two fields, in Europe and around the world. Readers will develop a good understanding of cutting-edge applications of remote sensing and geographic information science, and the challenges that affect heritage maintenance and protection. Particular attention is given to Earth observation and remote sensing techniques applied in different locations. This book brings together innovative technologies, concrete applications and policy perspectives that can lead to a more complete vision of cultural heritage as a resource for future development of our society as a whole. .

Description / Table of Contents: This book gives an overview of the principles of SAR processing, geometrix effects of SAR and parametric geocoding of SAR, both ellipsoid and terrain corrected. The new geocoded data sets and the systems and anciliary information to generate these data are described in detail. Basic applications and analysis procedures with the data are described in order to help to understand the content of the geocoded SAR images. Several authors from the German Processing and Archiving Facility (D-PAF) of DLR in Oberpfaffenhofen and other research groups, who actively contributed to algorithms and system aspects of SAR geocoding, contributed chapters of this reference book. An overview of current on-going activities in Europe in this domain concludes the chapters. This volume is intended to introduce new SAR data users as well as those starting with SAR data and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to the principles of SAR data geocoding and to give experts a detailed overview of used references and algorithms.

Notes: Purpose - It is in the interest of any gas company to maintain the value of its pipelines and to protect them effectively against damage caused by third parties. Aims to address this issue. Design/methodology/approach - As a result of global progress in high-resolution remote sensing and image processing technology, it is now possible to design natural gas pipeline monitoring systems with remote sensors and context-oriented image processing software. Findings - Recent developments in UAV technology show that UAVs provide the appropriate platforms for a remote sensing-based inspection system: appropriate small and medium size UAV have been developed, their operation is technically feasible in an controlled as well as in uncontrolled airspace. Research limitations/implications - The data and information processing system still has to be developed to an operational standard. A total operational system consisting of UAV platform, sensors, data processing and alarm detection has to be demonstrated in a complete mission. The certification and operation standards for a safe and efficient operation of UAVs do not yet exist. Originality/value - Two different scenarios for a UAV-based gas pipeline monitoring system are discussed.
