Notes: A possible phase transition is evident in the field dependent behavior of the ultrasonic attenuation in UPt3. In the low field region the behavior is linear and in the high field region close in Hc2 the behavior is quadratic in h'=(Hc2−H)/Hc2. At the crossover there is a small peak in the ultrasonic attenuation. The temperature dependence of the coefficients a(T), for the linear behavior, and b(T), for the quadratic behavior are obtained.

Notes: We describe modifications to an Oxford Model TLE 400 dilution refrigerator permitting measurements of microwave response at X-band. Coupling to the cavity is accomplished with a Gordon coupler involving a 1/4-in. access hole and a 1/4-in. dielectric rod running coaxial with the circular waveguide which feeds the microwave cavity. The rod extends through a vacuum load lock and may be removed. A stainless-steel sample insertion rod may then be inserted allowing top loading of specimens directly into the cavity; the samples themselves are attached to a copper fixture, involving a combination of left- and right-hand threads which may be reversibly screwed into and out of the bottom of the cavity. Preliminary surface impedance studies of s-wave superconductors (Sn, Zn, and In) and the heavy fermion UPt3 superconductor have been performed with this spectrometer.

Notes: A model of the vaporization and mass transport of mixed organometallics from a single source for thin film metalorganic chemical vapor deposition is presented. A stoichiometric gas phase can be obtained from a mixture of the organometallics in the desired mole ratios, in spite of differences in the volatilities of the individual compounds. Proper film composition and growth rates are obtained by controlling the velocity of a carriage containing the organometallics through the heating zone of a vaporizer.

Notes: Abstract We report measurements of the positions of theJ=2 collective modes in zero field using a new technique involving alternate pressure and temperature sweeps. Extensive measurements over a wide range of pressure, temperature, and frequency have been performed and are compared with previous data.

Notes: Abstract A review of ultrasonic measurements on the three heavy fermion compounds UPt 3 , URu 2 Si 2 and CeCu 6 is given. These compounds show one or more of the three types of co-operative behavior; Kondo-like effect, antiferromagnetism and superconductivity; all these features are observed as ultrasonic anomalies. Both UPt 3 and CeCu 6 show a strong coherence effect which is akin to a Kondo-like transition in the electronic system. Velocity anomalies are found at the antiferromagnetic transition for URu 2 Si 2 . UPt 3 also has an antiferromagnetic transition which is believed to influence the subsequent superconducting ordering. For UPt 3 , the superconductivity is of an unconventional nature; multiple superconducting phases have been observed and a complete phase diagram has been obtained from high resolution velocity measurements.

Notes: Abstract We have performed longitudinal sound velocity and attenuation measurements on a single crystal of UPt3 between 5 mK and 700 mK. The very low temperatures reached in this experiment allow a better comparison to the theoretical predictions of the longitudinal sound attenuation for different gap states. We have also observed for the first time a significant dispersion of sound associated with the superconducting transition. Within the resolution of our ultrasonic measurements on this sample, we did not observe any manifestation of the recently reported specific heat anomaly around 18 mK1.

Notes: Abstract A high-resolution, ultrasonic (12–89 MHz) acoustic impedance technique has been used to investigate the order parameter collective modes in superfluid3He-B over a pressure range of 0–15 bar and in magnetic fields up to 180 mT. In agreement with earlier experiments, theJ=2 real squashing mode has been observed to split into five components in small magnetic fields. However, contrary to earlier theoretical estimates, the Zeeman shifts have been found to become extremely nonlinear as the magnetic field is increased. The extent of this nonlinearity is largest at low pressures and at temperatures close toT c. In comparison with recent theoretical work, the nonlinear Zeeman shifts may be explained as a result of two effects. First, there is a significant distortion of the B-phase energy gap in large magnetic fields. Second, there is an important coupling between the sameJ zsubstates of the differentJ modes. In this sense the nonlinear evolution of the real squashing mode constitutes the observation of the Paschen-Back effect in3He-B. A comparison of the observed Zeeman shifts with theoretical expressions has yielded information about particle-particle and particle-hole interaction effects in the superfluid. In the limitT → 0 and above a threshold field, the real squashing mode has been found to possess additional structure. TheJ z=0 substate has been observed to split into a doublet. The separation between the two components of the doublet is of the order of 100–200 kHz and remains independent of the magnetic field. The origin of the doublet may be understood in terms of a recent theory which postulates a texture-dependent collective mode frequency. Further, at extremely small fields the effects due to dispersion of the real squashing modes have been found to be important. The magnitude of the dispersion-induced mode splitting in zero field is found to be consistent with theoretical predictions. TheJ=2 squashing mode has also been studied in the presence of a magnetic field. TheJ z=0 state of the squashing mode is observed to shift to lower temperatures in a magnetic field. An additional field dependence of the observed acoustic impedance is interpreted as the evolution of theJ z=−1, −2 states, but appears to be inconsistent with theoretical predictions.

Notes: Abstract The complex microwave impedance at ∼11.5 GHz was measured in the superconducting state of two well characterized heavy fermion single crystals, UPt 3 and UBe 13 . This microwave photon energy is about 30% and 20% of the zero-temperature energy gap, respectively, and is higher than previous measurements. The results for UBe 13 seem to be well described by the Mattis-Bardeen theory in the dirty-limit for a conventional superconductor. However, the behavior in UPt 3 deviates from this conventional theory even when paramagnetic impurity scattering effects are taken into account.

Notes: Abstract The longitudinal ultrasonic attenuation and velocity were measured on a single crystal of UPt3 in a high magnetic field of up to 23T. Earlier ultrasonic measurements had seen a softening of the lattice as evidenced by a huge drop in the velocity at a field of 20T. Both the attenuation and velocity have been measured in field sweeps. Accompanying the large dip in the velocity is a large attenuation peak at this metamagnetic transition. Measurements were also done at several frequencies.
