Notes: Summary Spatial pattern was analyzed in seventeen stands of oak-dominated forest to address the hypothesis that species tended to be aggregated under favorable conditions and widely spaced in xeric, nutrient poor conditions. Trees were sampled at 80–100 points in each stand with the distance-to-nearest neighbor method. Soil samples were collected in each stand for analysis of total nitrogen, total phosphorus, total potassium, soil pH, soil texture, and soil organic matter. Growing season precipitation was also recorded from climate stations near each stand. Quercus stellata (Wang.) dominated 10 stands, Q. marilandica (Muenchh.) dominated three stands and these species were codominant in four stands. Principal components analysis identified a soil texture/fertility gradient across the study area. Quercus stellata and all species combined were aggregated in most stands, whereas Q. marilandica was mostly randomly distributed within a stand. Small trees of all species combined tended to be aggregated and large trees were randomly dispersed in all but two stands, suggesting competition. Mean distance between large-large pairs was always greater than mean distance between small-small pairs in all stands, but this difference was only significant in one stand. Correlations between nearest neighbor distance and combined size of nearest neighbors were significant and positive in 12 of 17 stands. In all cases, however, slopes were shallow suggesting that competition is weak in these communities and has a limited effect on spacing of neighboring trees. Contrary to our hypothesis, trees were more aggregated on coarse-textured soils with low organic matter content. For all species combined, degree of aggregation was unrelated to growing season precipitation. Aggregation appears to be common in these forests because environmental stress in many stands reduces growth rates. Trees have not yet reached a size at which competition or other interactions can greatly increase interplant distances and reduce the degree of aggregation. A simple graphical model is developed to describe the relationship between patterns, stress and competition in plant communities.

Notes: Summary The iaaL gene of Pseudomonas syringae subsp. savastanoi encodes an indoleacetic acid-lysine synthetase that conjugates lysine to indoleacetic acid. A chimaeric gene consisting of the iaaL coding region under the control of the 35S RNA promoter from cauliflower mosaic virus (35SiaaL) has been used to test if iaaL gene expression leads to morphological alterations in tobacco and potato. Transgenic tobacco plantlets bearing this construct have been shown to synthesize IAA-[14C]lysine when fed with [14C]lysine. In late stages of development, their leaves show an increased nastic curvature (epinasty) of the petiole and midvein, a finding suggestive of an abnormal auxin metabolism. The alteration is transmitted to progeny as a dominant Mendelian trait cosegregating with the kanamycin resistance marker. Transgenic potato plants harbouring the construct are also characterised by petiole epinasty. Moreover, 35SiaaL transgenic plants have an increased internode length in potato and decreased root growth in both tobacco and potato. An increased content of IAA-conjugates in leaf blade was found to correlate with the epinastic alterations caused by iaaL gene expression in tobacco leaves. These data provide evidence that IAA conjugation is able to modulate hormone action, suggesting that the widespread endogenous auxin-conjugating activities are of physiological importance.

Notes: Hyperplastic lesions of the oral mucosa such as leukoplakia and oral lichan planus can eventually develop into squamous cell carcinomas. In the clinical treatment of these lesions it would be very important tobe able to predict the biological behaviour of an individual lesion. In 64 hyperplastic lesions and 85 squamous cell carcinomas of the oral mucosa, the expression of the mutant tumor suppressor gene p53and the grade of dysplasia of the lesions.

Description: In an attempt to cease from reducing the world and its phenomena to linear modeling and analytic dissection, Dynamic Systems Theories (DST) and Embodiment theories and methods aim to account for the complex, dynamic, and non-linear phenomena that we constantly deal with in psychology. For instance, a DST and Embodiment perspective can enrich psychology’s understanding of communicative processes both in clinical and non-clinical settings. In psychotherapy, research has shown that there are a number of common factors contributing to psychotherapy outcome, of which the therapeutic relationship is the most important one. These findings give communication a central role in the psychotherapy process. In the traditional view, the underlying model of understanding psychotherapy processes is that of a number of components summatively coming together enabling us to make a linear causal prediction. Yet, communication is inherently dynamic. A shift to viewing the communication process in psychotherapy as a field dynamic phenomenon helps us to take into account nonlinear phenomena, such as feedback processes within and between persons. We thus propose an embodied enactive dynamic systems view as a new theoretical and methodological perspective that can more realistically capture what happens among and between two persons in psychotherapy. This view is broader than that of most current models in psychotherapy research. DST and Embodied Enactive Approaches can offer solutions to the prevailing neglect of non-linear phenomena in Western science, to better account for the complex dynamics of reality, and to move to a more holistic level of analysis. DST and Embodied Enactive Approaches have developed not in a single discipline but in a joined movement based on various fields such as physics, biology, robotics, anthropology, philosophy, linguistics, neuroscience, and psychology, and have only recently entered clinical theorizing. The two new paradigms are presently triggering a rethinking of the therapeutic process by recognizing the embodied nature of psychological and communicative phenomena. Their integration opens up a promising scenario in the field of psychotherapy research, developing new, profoundly transdisciplinary, theoretical concepts, methodologies, and standards of knowledge. The notion of field dynamics enables us to account for the role of the communicational context in the regulation of intra-psychological processes, while at the same time avoiding the pitfalls of an ontologization of the hierarchy of systemic organization. Moreover, the new approach implements methodological strategies that can transcend the conventional opposition between idiographic and nomothetic sciences.

Description: The DNA-binding sites of estrogen receptor α (ERα) show great plasticity under the control of hormones and endocrine therapy. Tamoxifen is a widely applied therapy in breast cancer that affects ERα interactions with coregulators and shifts the DNA-binding signature of ERα upon prolonged exposure in breast cancer. Although tamoxifen inhibits the progression of breast cancer, it increases the risk of endometrial cancer in postmenopausal women. We therefore asked whether the DNA-binding signature of ERα differs between endometrial tumors that arise in the presence or absence of tamoxifen, indicating divergent enhancer activity for tumors that develop in different endocrine milieus. Using ChIP sequencing (ChIP-seq), we compared the ERα profiles of 10 endometrial tumors from tamoxifen users with those of six endometrial tumors from nonusers and integrated these results with the transcriptomic data of 47 endometrial tumors from tamoxifen users and 64 endometrial tumors from nonusers. The ERα-binding sites in tamoxifen-associated endometrial tumors differed from those in the tumors from nonusers and had distinct underlying DNA sequences and divergent enhancer activity as marked by histone 3 containing the acetylated lysine 27 (H3K27ac). Because tamoxifen acts as an agonist in the postmenopausal endometrium, similar to estrogen in the breast, we compared ERα sites in tamoxifen-associated endometrial cancers with publicly available ERα ChIP-seq data in breast tumors and found a striking resemblance in the ERα patterns of the two tissue types. Our study highlights the divergence between endometrial tumors that arise in different hormonal conditions and shows that ERα enhancer use in human cancer differs in the presence of nonphysiological endocrine stimuli.
