    Description: Skutterudites CoSb 3 are considered interesting candidates for thermoelectric applications, because the filling of guest atoms into the cage-like structure has the potential to improve its thermoelectric properties by an increased phonon scattering, which reduces the thermal conductivity. This, however, requires that a high electrical conductivity is maintained. In this study, we performed resistivity, Hall effect, and fluctuation spectroscopy measurements on polycrystalline thin films of semiconducting Yb z Co 4 Sb 12 with 0 〈 z 〈 0.27 . Our aim is to better understand the conventional dc electronic transport but also the low-frequency dynamical properties of the charge carriers. The electronic properties are highly sensitive to the filling factor z as well as other parameters, e.g., the Sb content. The resistivity can be described by Mott variable range hopping at low temperatures. A large 1/ f noise level suggests an influence of the granularity of the polycrystalline thin films. By analyzing the 1/ f -noise and two-level fluctuations, which are abundant for filled samples annealed at 500 °C, we are able to determine the energy distribution of the relevant electronic switching processes. A likely explanation for the observed low-frequency dynamics is capture/emission processes of impurities with a broad distribution within the energy gap.

    Description: Starburst galaxies exhibit in their central regions a highly increased rate of supernovae, the remnants of which are thought to accelerate energetic cosmic rays up to energies of approximately 10(15) electron volts. We report the detection of gamma rays--tracers of such cosmic rays--from the starburst galaxy NGC 253 using the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) array of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. The gamma-ray flux above 220 billion electron volts is F = (5.5 +/- 1.0(stat) +/- 2.8(sys)) x 10(-13) cm(-2) s(-1), implying a cosmic-ray density about three orders of magnitude larger than that in the center of the Milky Way.     Description: The accretion of matter onto a massive black hole is believed to feed the relativistic plasma jets found in many active galactic nuclei (AGN). Although some AGN accelerate particles to energies exceeding 10(12) electron volts and are bright sources of very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission, it is not yet known where the VHE emission originates. Here we report on radio and VHE observations of the radio galaxy Messier 87, revealing a period of extremely strong VHE gamma-ray flares accompanied by a strong increase of the radio flux from its nucleus.     Description: Rev-Erb-alpha and Rev-Erb-beta are nuclear receptors that regulate the expression of genes involved in the control of circadian rhythm, metabolism and inflammatory responses. Rev-Erbs function as transcriptional repressors by recruiting nuclear receptor co-repressor (NCoR)-HDAC3 complexes to Rev-Erb response elements in enhancers and promoters of target genes, but the molecular basis for cell-specific programs of repression is not known. Here we present evidence that in mouse macrophages Rev-Erbs regulate target gene expression by inhibiting the functions of distal enhancers that are selected by macrophage-lineage-determining factors, thereby establishing a macrophage-specific program of repression. Remarkably, the repressive functions of Rev-Erbs are associated with their ability to inhibit the transcription of enhancer-derived RNAs (eRNAs). Furthermore, targeted degradation of eRNAs at two enhancers subject to negative regulation by Rev-Erbs resulted in reduced expression of nearby messenger RNAs, suggesting a direct role of these eRNAs in enhancer function. By precisely defining eRNA start sites using a modified form of global run-on sequencing that quantifies nascent 5' ends, we show that transfer of full enhancer activity to a target promoter requires both the sequences mediating transcription-factor binding and the specific sequences encoding the eRNA transcript. Here we use natural genetic variation as an in vivo mutagenesis screen to assess the genome-wide effects of sequence variation on lineage-determining and signal-specific transcription factor binding, epigenomics and transcriptional outcomes in primary macrophages from different mouse strains. We find substantial genetic evidence to support the concept that lineage-determining transcription factors define epigenetic and transcriptomic states by selecting enhancer-like regions in the genome in a collaborative fashion and facilitating binding of signal-dependent factors.     Description: The host innate immune response is the first line of defense against pathogens and is orchestrated by the concerted expression of genes induced by microbial stimuli. Deregulated expression of these genes is linked to the initiation and progression of diseases associated with exacerbated inflammation. Here, we identify Topoisomerase 1 (Top1) as a positive regulator of RNA polymerase II (RNAPII) transcriptional activity at pathogen-induced genes. Depletion or chemical inhibition of Top1 suppresses the host response against Influenza and Ebola viruses as well as bacterial products. As a result, therapeutic pharmacological inhibition of Top1 protects mice from death in experimental models of lethal inflammation.
