    Description: Chloride (Cl – ), stable isotope ratios of water (δ 18 O and δ 2 H), sulfur hexafluoride (SF 6 ), tritium ( 3 H), carbon-14 ( 14 C), noble gases ( 4 He, Ne and Ar) and hydrometry were used to characterise groundwater-surface water interactions, in particular infiltration rates, for the Lower Namoi River (New South Wales, Australia). The study period (four sampling campaigns between November 2009 and November 2011) represented the end of a decade-long drought followed by several high-flow events. The hydrometry showed that the river was generally losing to the alluvium, except when storm-derived floodwaves in the river channel generated bank recharge – discharge cycles. Using 3 H/ 14 C-derived estimates of groundwater mean residence times along the transect, infiltration rates ranged from 0.6 – 5 m year −1 . However, when using the peak transition age (a more realistic estimate of travel time in highly dispersive environments), the range in infiltration rate was larger (4 – 270 m year −1 ). Both river water (highest δ 2 H, δ 18 O, SF 6 , 3 H and 14 C) and an older groundwater source (lowest δ 2 H, δ 18 O, SF 6 , 3 H, 14 C and highest 4 He) were found in the riparian zone. This old groundwater end-member may represent leakage from an underlying confined aquifer (Great Artesian Basin). Environmental tracers may be used to estimate infiltration rates in this riparian environment but the presence of multiple sources of water and a high dispersion induced by frequent variations in the water table complicates their interpretation.     Description: The gene (E2A) that codes for proteins with the properties of immunoglobulin enhancer binding factors E12/E47 was mapped to chromosome region 19p13.2-p13.3, a site associated with nonrandom translocations in acute lymphoblastic leukemias. The majority of t(1;19)(q23;p13)-carrying leukemias and cell lines studied contained rearrangements of E2A as determined by DNA blot analyses. The rearrangements altered the E2A transcriptional unit, resulting in the synthesis of a transcript larger than the normal-sized E2A mRNAs in one of the cell lines with this translocation.     Description: In the news article "Can risky mergers save hospital-based research?" by Wade Roush (19 May, p. 968), the statement that University Hospitals of Cleveland rose from 20th in the rankings of teaching hospitals funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 1991 to 12th at present was incorrect. In fact, it was Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), with which University Hospitals of Cleveland is affiliated, that received $69 million in NIH grants in 1993, making it the 20th largest recipient of such grants among medical centers; the university then received $97 million in 1994, raising its rank to 12th. About $15 million of the increase, or 53%, was attributable to CWRU's 1992 affiliation with Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.     Description: Interval mapping of data from two independent samples of sib pairs, at least one member of whom was reading disabled, revealed evidence for a quantitative trait locus (QTL) on chromosome 6. Results obtained from analyses of reading performance from 114 sib pairs genotyped for DNA markers localized the QTL to 6p21.3. Analyses of corresponding data from an independent sample of 50 dizygotic twin pairs provided evidence for linkage to the same region. In combination, the replicate samples yielded a chi 2 value of 16.73 (P = 0.0002). Examination of twin and kindred siblings with more extreme deficits in reading performance yielded even stronger evidence for a QTL (chi 2 = 27.35, P 〈 0.00001).     Description: A t(17;19) chromosomal translocation in early B-lineage acute leukemia was shown to result in chimeric transcripts that contain sequences from the E2A basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor gene on chromosome 19, fused to sequences from a previously unidentified gene (HLF) on chromosome 17 that encodes a hepatic leukemia factor. The chimeric protein consisted of the amino-terminal transactivation domain of E2A linked to the carboxyl-terminal basic region-leucine zipper domain of HLF.     Description: The identification of neural stem and progenitor cells (NPCs) by in vivo brain imaging could have important implications for diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic purposes. We describe a metabolic biomarker for the detection and quantification of NPCs in the human brain in vivo. We used proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to identify and characterize a biomarker in which NPCs are enriched and demonstrated its use as a reference for monitoring neurogenesis. To detect low concentrations of NPCs in vivo, we developed a signal processing method that enabled the use of magnetic resonance spectroscopy for the analysis of the NPC biomarker in both the rodent brain and the hippocampus of live humans.
