    Notes: This paper describes the application of a linear programming model to project selection and resource allocation problems in two industrial R & D laboratories. Mathematical models have not been widely used in practice because of the inherent uncertainty of research. The model discussed here yields information about the outcome of decisions under conditions of uncertainty. The elements of the model are developed, using simple examples, and the form of the complete model outlined. Benefit evaluation is carried out using probabilistic networks and uncertainty in benefits included by utilizing the concept of certainty equivalence. The use of the model in practical situations is discussed, with examples of the information obtained from the solution, and sensitivity studies to investigate the uncertain environment are described. The result is a flexible model, which produces information necessary for planning purposes and which is acceptable to practising R & D Managers.

    Notes: Blood chemistry values were measured from 31 harbor porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) released from herring weirs in the Bay of Fundy, Canada. Sodium, phosphorus, calcium, chloride, magnesium, total protein, albumin, globulin, urea, cholesterol, serum osmolality, and alanine aminotransferase levels fell within ranges reported for captive harbor porpoises and other odontocetes. Glucose, potassium, creatine kinase, aspartate aminotransferase, hemoglobin, thyroxine, bilirubin, and alkaline phosphatase levels were generally higher than those reported for captive odontocetes. Cortisol and creatinine levels were significantly higher (P= 0.0356 and 0.0174, respectively) in porpoises that were handled for longer periods and fitted with electronic tags (mean cortisol value = 314 ± 107 nmol/L, mean creatinine value = 94 ± 14 μmol/L) than those receiving roto-tags (mean cortisol value = 222 ± 82 nmol/L, mean creatinine value = 75 ± 15 μmol/L). A more controlled study of duration of handling, time spent out of water, degree of manipulation, and method of tag attachment is required to identify which factors are responsible for the stress response.

    Notes: Abstract The ionization constant of benzoic acid has been determined by conductivity measurements of dilute aqueous solutions and found to vary from 6.27×10−5 at 25°C to 0.39×10−5 at 250°C. The pressure effect to 2000 bar has been measured, and the ratio of ionization constants K2000/K1 is 2.26 at 25°C and 7.3 at 250°C. ΔV°1, the standard partial molar volume change for the ionization at 1 bar, varies from −11.7 cm3-mol−1 at 25°C to −60 cm3-mol−1 at 250°C. The volume changes are smaller at higher pressures.

The standard partial molar volume change for the ionization at 1 bar, $$\Delta \bar V_1^0$$ , increases from −27.6 cm3-mole−1 at 25°C to −88 cm3-mole−1 at 250°C. The volume changes are smaller at higher pressures. A linear correlation between $$\Delta \bar V_1^0$$ and the partial molar compressibility for the ionization reaction has been noted. A similar correlation exists between the partial molar entropy and volume changes for the reaction.
