Abstract In order to find information on the dependence of the circulation pattern in the extremities of men on the external temperature, a water-air displacement plethysmograph has been built that allows measurements of the rate of heat loss from the extremities as well as the rate of blood flow in these extremities. Experiments can be performed at different temperatures of the water in which the extremity is immersed. The experimental accuracy for volume changes greater than 102 mm3 is better than 1%, while the accuracy for heat exchanges is 0·2 W.
