Description: We investigate the magnetoelectric effect in Sr 2 CoGe 2 O 7 , which has a two-dimensional magnetic interaction between Co ions in the ab plane. This compound shows a weak magnetism and field-induced magnetic transition below the temperature of 7 K. It does not exhibit electric polarization under zero magnetic field. However, by applying an external magnetic field, the electric polarization is induced around its Néel temperature and increases with increasing magnetic field. The induced electric polarization in Sr 2 CoGe 2 O 7 is almost two orders of magnitude smaller than that of Ba 2 CoGe 2 O 7 . This result suggests that the different ionic radius of the strontium and the barium anion plays a key role in determining the property of electric polarization. The origins of electric polarization and magnetoelectric effect are discussed.

Description: Engineered tumor-targeted anthrax lethal toxin proteins have been shown to strongly suppress growth of solid tumors in mice. These toxins work through the native toxin receptors tumor endothelium marker-8 and capillary morphogenesis protein-2 (CMG2), which, in other contexts, have been described as markers of tumor endothelium. We found that neither...

Description: Dicer participates in heterochromatin formation in fission yeast and plants. However, whether it has a similar role in mammals remains controversial. Here we showed that the human Dicer protein interacts with SIRT7, an NAD + -dependent H3K18Ac (acetylated lysine 18 of histone H3) deacetylase, and holds a proportion of SIRT7 in the cytoplasm. Dicer knockdown led to an increase of chromatin-associated SIRT7 and simultaneously a decrease of cytoplasmic SIRT7, while its overexpression induced SIRT7 reduction in the chromatin-associated fraction and increment in the cytoplasm. Furthermore, DNA damaging agents promoted Dicer expression, leading to decreased level of chromatin-associated SIRT7 and increased level of H3K18Ac, which can be alleviated by Dicer knockdown. Taken together with that H3K18Ac was exclusively associated with the chromatin, our findings suggest that Dicer induction by DNA damaging treatments prevents H3K18Ac deacetylation, probably by trapping more SIRT7 in the cytoplasm.

Description: A complete marine uppermost Permian to Lower Triassic succession is well exposed at the Daxiakou section of the Three Gorges area, western Hubei Province, South China. A total of 12 conodont zones are recognized from the uppermost Changhsingian (upper Permian) to Olenekian (Lower Triassic). Of these, the Clarkina yini, Clarkina meishanensis , and Clarkina taylorae Zones characterize the uppermost Changhsingian, whereas the Hindeodus parvus , Isarcicella staeschei , Isarcicella isarcica , Neoclarkina krystyni , Neoclarkina discreta , Sweetospathodus kummeli , and Neospathodus dieneri Zones define the Induan. Early Olenekian conodonts are assignable to the Novispathodus waageni and Nv. pingdingshanensis Zones. Conodont zones across the Permian-Triassic boundary (PTB) beds at Daxiakou correlate well with those established from the Meishan section, the Global Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) for the PTB. The PTB is placed at the base of Bed 11c at Daxiakou. The Ns. dieneri M1, Ns. dieneri M2, and Ns. dieneri M3 subzones are distinguished from the Ns. dieneri Zone. Both Nv. waageni eowaageni and Nv. waageni waageni subzones are also recognized within the Nv. waageni Zone. The first occurrence of Nv. waageni eowaageni is an ideal marker defining the Induan–Olenekian boundary (IOB), which is calibrated to the base of Bed 86a at Daxiakou and is clearly beneath the ammonoid Flemingites - Euflemingites Zone.

Description: 〈p〉Although nuclear type 2C protein phosphatase (PP2C) has been demonstrated to be pro-oncogenic with an important role in tumorigenesis, the underlying mechanisms that link aberrant PP2C levels with cancer development remain elusive. Here, we found that aberrant PP2C activity decreases p53 acetylation and its transcriptional activity and suppresses doxorubicin-induced cell apoptosis. Mechanistically, we show that BRCA1 facilitates p300-mediated p53 acetylation by complexing with these two proteins and that S1423/1524 phosphorylation is indispensable for this regulatory process. PP2C, via dephosphorylation of ATM, suppresses DNA damage–induced BRCA1 phosphorylation, leading to inhibition of p300-mediated p53 acetylation. Furthermore, PP2C levels correlate with histological grade and are inversely associated with BRCA1 phosphorylation and p53 acetylation in breast cancer specimens. C23, our newly developed PP2C inhibitor, promotes the anticancer effect of doxorubicin in MCF-7 xenograft–bearing nude mice. Together, our data indicate that PP2C impairs p53 acetylation and DNA damage response by compromising BRCA1 function.〈/p〉

Description: In this study, based on a comprehensive numerical simulation of self-consistent charging, we investigate the formation, evolution and influencing factors of space charge distributions for a grounded insulating thin film of SiO 2 negatively charged by a keV non-penetrating focused electron beam. The simulated space charge presents first positive distributions and then negative ones along both the radial and depth directions because of the difference between electron and hole transports. The variations in distribution occur within a range of the minimum potential acting as a potential barrier for carrier transport. The negative space charge is distributed more widely and deeply, though its peak value in density is usually lower than that of the positive one. Electrons trapped outside the minimum potential range dominate the strength of negative charging. With the increase in potential barrier and the occurrence of leakage current, the space charge eventually reaches equilibrium and exhibits an approximately one-dimensional axial distribution outside the minimum potential range. Distribution features of the space charge density in the equilibrium state correlate with the film and beam parameters via transients of the leakage current. These results and analyses provide new insights into the negative charging effects involved in various electron-beam-based surface microscopic methods, analyses and fabrication techniques.

Description: We report a power efficient non-volatile magnetoelectric memory in the CoPt/(011)PMN-PT heterostructure. Two reversible and stable electric field induced coercivity states (i.e., high- H C or low- H C ) are obtained due to the strain mediated converse magnetoelectric effect. The reading process of the different coercive field information written by electric fields is demonstrated by using a magnetoresistance read head. This result shows good prospects in the application of novel multiferroic devices.

Description: SUMMARY Full waveform inversion (FWI) of surface seismic data requires low-frequency and long-offset data, namely diving waves or post-critical reflections, to update the long wavelength features of the parameters. In most geological settings, short and long offsets cannot be interpreted simultaneously without accounting for anisotropy. FWI therefore may require anisotropic modelling, which leads to the question of the parametrization of the inversion, since it is not possible to retrieve all the earth models from pressure (or vertical displacement) data, even in the simple vertical transversely isotropic (VTI) case. With a change of variables in the acoustic VTI wave equations, it can be shown that, in the context of macromodel building, namely background estimation, acoustic VTI FWI mainly depends on the normal moveout (NMO) velocity and the horizontal velocity (or equivalently a combination of these two velocities). An analysis of the eigenvalue/eigenvector decomposition of the Hessian confirms the relevance of the parametrization of the VTI wave equations with the NMO and horizontal velocities. It also points out a possible ambiguity when one inverts for two parameters. This ambiguity is further illustrated in synthetic examples. The trade-off between velocity heterogeneities and anisotropy also complicates the recovery of the second anisotropic parameter η. Nevertheless, FWI successfully interprets the kinematics of the data.

Description: A series of FePt films with different magnetic structures are deposited on Pb(Mg 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 –PbTiO 3 substrates. By applying an electric field across the piezoelectric single crystal substrate, an magnetoelectric effect is observed in FePt/Pb(Mg 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 –PbTiO 3 heterostructure due to the phase transformation between face-centered cubic and face-centered tetragonal phases in the film. Taking advantage of the different coercivity caused by the electric field, the sign of magnetization can be manipulated reversibly at room temperature with the electric field switching on or off. Based on this experimental result, we demonstrate a model for the technology of information storage, in which data can be written electrically without false writing.
