    Notes: It is proposed that the fringing field of the Faraday screen of an ion–Bernstein wave antenna can couple to a short wavelength electrostatic mode and cause significant parasitic loading. The mixed boundary value problem is solved analytically and numerically. The characteristics of the resulting parasitic loading are described and relevance to experiments is described.

    Notes: Abstract. Keating (1982) used a lumped parameter model to explain an unusual chalk aquifer consisting of a thin zone of high storage and transmissivity whose response of small annual fluctuations and high stream flows were considered to be anomalous. A similar model has been further developed and used in a preliminary desk study of possible river augmentation schemes. The model developments incorporate stream bed leakage to the aquifer and saturated depth varying transmissivity. As a result the model is versatile in its ability to test a variety of control rules for ground-water abstraction. The newly incorporated factors are significant for assessment of the degree of success of augmentation proposals. This lumped model gave valuable guidance for future field investigations.

    Notes: Transboundary aquifers are as important a component of global water resource systems as are transboundary rivers; yet, their recognition in international water policy and legislation is very limited. Existing international conventions and agreements barely address aquifers and their resources. To rectify this deficiency, the International Association of Hydrogeologists and UNESCO's International Hydrological Programme have established the Internationally Shared (transboundary) Aquifer Resource Management (ISARM) Programme. This multiagency cooperative program has launched a number of global and regional initiatives. These are designed to delineate and analyze transboundary aquifer systems and to encourage riparian states to work cooperatively toward mutually beneficial and sustainable aquifer development. The agencies participating in ISARM include international and regional organizations (e.g., Organization of American States, United Nations Environment Programme, United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, Food and Agriculture Organization, and South African Development Community). Using outputs of case studies, the ISARM Programme is building scientific, legal, environmental, socioeconomic, and institutional guidelines and recommendations to aid sharing nations in the management of their transboundary aquifers. Since its start in 2000, the program has completed inventories of transboundary aquifers in the Americas and Africa, and several ISARM case studies have commenced.

    Notes: Flow simulations supplemented resource evaluation studies of the Lower Greensand aquifer. The annual recharge has hitherto been considered to be the resource available for development although a large confined storage exists. Pumping is principally in urban areas but recent monitoring suggests that the aquifer may have suffered excessive drawdowns. Therefore, simulation studies were carried out to refine the annual recharge estimate, to define the past effects of pumping and to obtain an indication of future trends. Catchment water balance indicates average annual recharge of 28 × 106 m3. One-dimensional (ID) ground-water flow simulation suggests that regional abstractions affect outcrop-water levels. The study showed that the aquifer reached a new equilibrium with the current pumping regime. An improved insight to the aquifer has permitted the formulation of strategies for future resource development.

    Notes: A cell dynamical system (CDS) is defined by a map which takes a configuration on a lattice at a time t to a configuration at time t + 1. Phase-ordering dynamics, block copolymers etc. have been modeled in terms of CDS. With the phase-ordering dynamics model, the scaling exponent (and the universal function) for the form factor in the scaling regime and the effect of noise on these have been studied. It is clearly observed that, for the ordering process in the (critically quenched) conserved order parameter case, the scaling exponent crosses over from ̃0.28 to ̃0.33. This crossover is delayed with the introduction of noise, with larger amplitudes of noise causing a greater delay.
