Notes: The effects of magnetic alignment, heat treatment, and substrate interactions on the microstructural development and properties of YBa2Cu3O7−x (Y123) thick films were studied. Aligned films were formed by vacuum filtrating a particulate suspension in a 7 T applied field. These films and nonaligned control films were fired on either platinum (Pt) foil or magnesium oxide (MgO) substrates to various maximum temperatures between 930 and 1040 °C. Optical microscopy revealed large differences in microstructural development between the various films. Aligned Y123 films fired on Pt foil exhibited the best microstructural properties. Via plasma emission spectroscopy and secondary ion mass spectroscopy, approximately 0.1 wt % Pt was found distributed throughout the films fired on platinum, while negligible amounts of Mg were detected in the films fired on MgO substrates. Differential thermal analysis revealed that, in the presence of Pt, the peritectic temperature (1030 °C for pure Y123 in O2) is reduced 70 °C, thereby opening a substantial thermal processing window for partial melt assisted growth of textured Y123. SQUID measurements of magnetic hysteresis and Tc provided quantitative evidence that, relative to the films fired on MgO, those fired on Pt exhibited enhanced texture development [ΔM(Happ(parallel)c axis)/ΔM(Happ⊥c axis)=2.6 at 5 K, 1 T] and properties (Bean model Jc,m=5×104 A/cm2 at 5 K, 4 T) without degradation of the Tc characteristics.

Notes: We have developed a technique which permits high-yield fabrication of microbridges and low noise YBa2Cu3O7 superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) in epitaxial thin films. These SQUIDs operate over a wide temperature range extending from 4 K to close to the superconducting transition temperature. Measurements of an rf SQUID operating at 77 K give a peak-to-peak flux sensitivity of 36 μV/Φ0 and a flux noise at 10 Hz of 1.5× 10−4 Φ0/(square root of)Hz. Device yields over 80% have been obtained.

Notes: We have grown crystalline thin films of LaAlO3 using off-axis rf sputtering from a single stoichiometric target. The films grow epitaxially on SrTiO3 and LaAlO3 (100) substrates as well as on YBa2Cu3O7 thin films. We report on the growth conditions used to make these films, the properties of the films, and the properties of bilayer and trilayer structures containing both LaAlO3 and YBa2Cu3O7 films. Transmission electron microscopy cross-sectional and x-ray diffraction analyses indicate that all the constituent films in the multilayers grow epitaxially and that the interfaces between the films are sharply defined. Preliminary transport measurements on these multilayers show that LaAlO3 can be used for dielectric layers in a variety of high-temperature superconductor electronic circuits.

Notes: A perovskite-like single-crystal substrate material has been investigated that simultaneously permits epitaxial growth of 1-2-3 superconductor films and possesses desirable rf properties of low dielectric constant and loss tangent. The lattice constant of 3.792 A(ring) provides a lattice match to within 1% of the a axis of 1-2-3. Sputtered films of erbium-barium-copper-oxide have been produced on (100) LaAlO3 substrates that exhibit sharp resistive transitions at 90 K (ΔT=1K), bulk superconductivity as determined by ac susceptibility measurements, and nearly single-crystal growth as evidenced by x-ray diffraction and high-resolution scanning electron microscopy. The high-frequency dielectric properties of LaAlO3 were experimentally investigated at several temperatures. The low-frequency dielectric constant was measured to be 15 and the microwave loss tangent ranged from 6×10−4 at room temperature to 5×10−6 at 4 K.

Notes: The surface impedance of superconducting YBa2Cu3O7 films as a function of temperature at 10 GHz has been measured in a parallel plate resonator geometry. The penetration depth λ(T), complex microwave conductivity σ(T), and quasiparticle scattering rate 1/τ(T) were also determined. After a rapid fall as T is lowered below Tc, the surface resistance Rs exhibits a linear dependence from 65 K down to 6 K. As T drops below Tc, the real part of the conductivity σ1 has a rapid rise, which is attributed to the observed dramatic increase in τ. The normal-fluid density shows a linear behavior at low temperatures, which is inconsistent with s-wave BCS superconductivity.

Notes: Grain-aligned YBa2Cu3O7−x films were fabricated by vacuum filtration in an applied magnetic field (7 T). Platinum (Pt) was shown to lower the peritectic temperature of YBa2Cu3O7−x by almost 75 °C, leading to dramatic microstructural differences between films densified on MgO (single crystal) substrates and those densified on Pt foil to a maximum temperature of 1020 °C in oxygen. Superconducting quantum-interference device hysteresis loops measured at 0–5.5 T at 5 K showed that films fired on Pt had ΔM (Happ(parallel)c axis) values 15–60 times larger than those fired on MgO.

Notes: We report measurements of the electrical and magnetic transport properties of high-quality superconducting Ba1−xKxBiO3 (BKBO) thin films grown by in situ pulsed laser deposition. The best films exhibit sharp resistance and magnetic transitions with zero resistance above 28 K and widths of 0.3 K, and nearly linear normal state resistance extending from the transition to above room temperature. Critical current densities obtained by transport in patterned BKBO lines are greater than 3×106 A/cm2 at 4 K. The transverse magnetoresistance exhibits predominantly BCS-like behavior with an upper critical field slope of −0.78 T/K near Tc, giving Hc2(0)=15.2 T and a BCS coherence length ξ=46 A(ring). We also observe substantial field broadening suggestive of flux flow dissipation.

Notes: We have grown superconducting thin films of Ba1−xKxBiO3 by in situ pulsed laser deposition from a stoichiometric (x=0.4) target. The best films exhibit an onset transition temperature of 28 K and have zero resistance as high as 26 K. Films are single phase and highly oriented in the (100) or (110) direction on MgO, SrTiO3, LaAlO3, and Al2O3 substrates. We have observed high-quality normal-insulator-superconductor and superconductor-insulator-superconductor quasiparticle tunneling characteristics with the films.

Notes: Abstract High-quality superconducting films of erbium-barium-copper-oxide have been produced in a multisource sputtering system on a variety of substrates, including buffered sapphire and silicon wafers as well as various single-crystal materials. Fine-grained polycrystalline films with narrow (〈4 K) resistive transitions have been grown on a number of different substrates. The use of erbium in the 12–3 compound leads to improved film morphology and to more forgiving conditions for establishing of the superconducting phase. Sputtered neutral mass spectroscopy (SNMS) yields useful information about the compositional profile of the films.
