The precipitates formed by mixing Co2+ and CN- solutions at molar ratios of CN/Co 〈 5 dissolve in aqueous O2-free enthylenediamine yielding the binuclear complex [(CN)4Co-en-Co(CN)4]4-. This Co(II) complex is very instable, sensitive to oxygen, and is easily oxidised by water under H2 evolution to the Co(III) complex [Co(CN)4en]-. At molar ratios 〈 5, even in the presence of excess enthylene diamine, the well-known pentacyanocobaltate(II) is formed.

Die durch Mischen von Co2+- und CN--Lösungen bei einem Molverhältnis CN/Co 〈 5 erhaltenen Niederschläge lösen sich in wäßrigem Äthylendiamin in sauerstoffreier Atmosphäre unter Bildung eines zweikernigen Komplexes mit dem Anion [(CN)4Co-en-Co(CN)4]4-. Dieser Co(II)-Komplex ist sehr unstabil und sauerstoffempfindlich und wird schon bei 20 °C von Wasser unter H2-Entwicklung zum stabilen Tetracyanoäthylendiamincobaltat(III) oxydiert. Bei Molverhältnissen CN/Co ≥ 5 bildet sich auch in Anwesenheit eines großen Äthylendiaminüberschusses hauptsächlich das bekannte Pentacyanocobaltat(II).
