The reaction of chlorosulfonic acid with acetic anhydride yields acetylchloride and acetylsulfonic acid. The chloride may easily be isolated whereas acetylsulfonic acid is only obtainable as a mixture with acetic anhydride. Raise of temperature results in its rearrangement to the stable sulfoacetic acid. Salts of the acetylsulfonic acid could not be isolated because of their spontaneous decomposition into pyrosulfate and acetic anhydride. This reaction opened up another simple way for the synthesis of acetyl chloride according to the equation given above.

Chloroschwefelsäure reagiert mit Essigsäureanhydrid quantitativ unter Bildung von Acetylchlorid und Acetylschwefelsäure. Während sich das Säurechlorid sehr leicht isolieren läßt, wird die Acetylschwefelsäure nur bei tiefen Temperaturen im Gemisch mit Essigsäureanhydrid erhalten. Temperaturerhöhung führt zur Umlagerung in die stabile Sulfoessigsäure. Versuche zur Isolierung ihrer Salze scheiterten daran, daß diese spontan in Pyrosulfat und Essigsäureanhydrid zerfallen. Dieser Befund eröffnet einen weiteren einfachen Weg zur Synthese von Acetylchlorid nach (CH3CO)2O + 2 ClSO3Na → 2 CH3COCL + Na2S2O7.
