Notes: Conclusions What is it then that a participant reflects upon as he returns to the less heady realm of his own professional and scholarly activities? First of all, there is conflict. Once the threat of nuclear was rested chiefly in bipolar competition between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. We are now in a multipolar world: infinitely more unpredictable and dangerous, where a lunatic individual could cause as much terror as a whole nation. Institutional arrangements are essential permitting the ebb and flow of conflict. Political geography shows that modern nations are a composite of earlier tribalisms and regional loyalties. Perhaps the same process of increasing consciousness can be expanded to shared responsibility from megalopolitan to global scales. Directly related to this is the issue of population. Anthropos is increasing at the rate of 200,000 more births than deaths a day. Many answers are given by experts, but the main item of consensus appears to be that population will decrease when the lowest-income groups are lifted out of absolute proverty, the darkness of malnutrition, ignorance, and disease.

Notes: Abstract The majority of patients with DiGeorge syndrome (DGS) and velo-cardio-facial syndrome (VCFS) and a minority of patients with non-syndromic conotruncal heart defects are hemizygous for a region of chromosome 22q11. The chromosomal region that is commonly deleted is larger than 2 Mb. It has not been possible to narrow the smallest region of overlap (SRO) of the deletions to less than ca 500 kb, which suggests that DGS/VCFS might be a contiguous gene syndrome. The saturation cloning of the SRO is being carried out, and one gene (TUPLE1) has been identified. By using a cosmid probe (M51) and fluorescence in situ hybridization, we show here that the anonymous DNA marker locus D22S183 is within the SRO, between TUPLE1 and D22S75 (probe N25). A second locus with weak homology to D22S183, recognized by cosmid M56, lies immediately outside the common SRO of the DGS and VCFS deletions, but inside the SRO of the DGS deletions. D22S183 sequences are strongly conserved in primates and weaker hybridizing signals are found in DNA of other mammalian species; no transcripts are however detected in polyA+ RNA from various adult human organs. Probe M51 allows fast reliable screening for 22q11 deletions using fluorescence in situ hybridization. A deletion was found in 11 out of 12 DGS patients and in 3 out of 7 VCFS patients. Two patients inherited the deletion from a parent with mild (atypical) symptoms.

Notes: Abstract Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a frequent hereditary disorder. The disease is characterized by a very high mutation rate (up to 1/10000 gametes per generation). NF1-related loci in the human genome have been implicated in the high mutation rate by hypothesizing that these carry disease-causing mutations, which can be transferred to the functional NF1 gene on chromosome arm 17q by interchromosomal gene conversion. To test this hypothesis, we want to identify and characterize the NF1-related loci in the human genome. In this study, we have localized an NF1-related locus in the most centromeric region of the long arm of chromosome 22. We demonstrate that this locus contains sequences homologous to cDNAs that include the GAP-related domain of the functional NF1 gene. However, the GAP-related domain itself is not represented in this locus. In addition, cosmids specific to this locus reveal, by in situ hybridization, NF1-related loci in the pericentromeric region of chromosome arm 14q and in chromosomal band 2q21. These cosmids will enable us to determine whether identified disease-causing mutations are present at the chromosome 22-associated NF1-related locus.

Notes: Summary Single-stemmed potato plants, cv. Bintje, were grown on a nutrient solution under controlled conditions. They were exposed to a short drought stress, or remained untreated. Short-term changes in tuber volume and in specific leaf weight were measured non-destructively. Tubers from control plants increased rapidly in volume during the night and did not grow, or even shrivelled during the day. Tubers of stressed plants did not show a uniform response; some tubers markedly declined in volume during the day. The patterns of volume increase of stressed plants became erratic after the stress, mainly because some plants never fully recovered. Patterns of diurnal fluctuation in tuber volume were similar to diurnal changes in specific leaf weight; tubers within the same stressed plant sometimes reacted differently. In these cases the effects on the diurnal fluctuation partly reflected the long-term effects, reported in an earlier paper.

Notes: Summary Single-stemmed potato plants, cv. Bintje, were grown on a nutrient solution under controlled conditions. They were exposed to a short drought stress, or remained untreated. Long-term measurements of tuber volume were carried out with a non-destructive volume-meter. Specific leaf weight was monitored with a β-gauge. Tubers from the same plant varied in rate and duration of growth. The relative growth of stressed tubers was 43–54% less than that of the control tubers. The hierarchy of tubers from one stem changed over time in plants that were exposed to the stress. Specific leaf weight declined during the stress period but there was a prompt recovery after the relief from drought. This response was similar to the response of the average rate of volume increase of the tuber.

Notes: Summary Gold and silver ions can be precipitated in aqueous solutions by means of stannic hydroxide and after addition of 2-phenylethylene phosphonic acid and foaming agents be easily separated by flotation. After enrichment a quantitative analysis can be carried out by flame atomic-absorption spectroscopy. The disturbing influence of heavy metal ions in gold assaying is eliminated by the extraction of the substance to be analyzed by means of i-amyl alcohol. After flotation of 1 l solution contents of ng · ml−1 can be analyzed with sufficient accuracy and precision.

Notes: Summary In most cases investigations concerning the reproducibility of different analytical methods for the determination of tin in tin ores consist only in comparisons of means, i.e. detection of systematic errors. The fact that the methods use different calibrating procedures, on the one hand, and that their accuracy varies, on the other hand, makes it necessary, to look for more sensitive criteria. For this purpose, the degree of efficiency regarding the determination of the true mean of a reference method, the degree of (mutual) reproducibility, and the equivalence probability are defined and their meaning is statistically interpreted. The degree of efficiency ɛ of any two methods is defined as the ratio of their mean square errors in determining the true mean of a reference method. This quantity can be described by the ratio of the upper bounds for the probabilities of an error by the two methods. The degree of reproducibility P* of different analytical methods we understand as minimal probability of comparable measuring results. The equivalence probability Pe is defined as a-posteriori probability of the hypothesis that the two distribution functions considered are identical. The criteria ɛ, P* and Pe seem to be more suitable for statistical comparisons as compared to known statistical standard procedures, such as the t-test criterion. The applicability of these quantities was checked by the example of 6 different methods for the determination of tin in tin ores. For this purpose, it was necessary to evaluate objectively the efficiency of sample division in order to get reproducible final samples for analysis using the hierarchical two-way classification of variance analysis. General knowledge concerning the analytical methods used could be completed.

Description: The coprecipitation of U (VI) with iron corrosion products from aqueous solutions by zero valent iron was investigated. The evidence of coprecipitation was demonstrated by conducting experiments with well characterized scrap iron, pyrite and a mixture of both materials with experimental durations of up to four months. Results indicate that under anoxic conditions only less than one tenth of the immobilized U(VI) was associated with the surface of scrap iron, whereas theremaining amount is entrapped in aging corrosion products.
