Notes: A new formalism for solving general nonlinear equations is proposed. Given a nonlinear operator equation, a dual operator is constructed, canonically, similar to the adjoint operator in linear theory. By using this dual operator, advanced and retarded propagators (analogs of the Green's functions in linear theory) are generated. These propagators satisfy the customary reciprocity and semigroup properties and yield the formal solution of the original nonlinear problem. It is further shown that these propagators can be obtained either by solving a linear equation that still contains an implicit dependence on the problem's solution or by solving a closed-form nonlinear integral equation from which the problem's solution itself is completely eliminated. The formalism is canonical in the sense that its applicability is not affected by the particularities of the nonlinear operator, boundary conditions, and underlying phase space. All aspects of applying this formalism to nonlinear problems are illustrated analytically on the Riccati equation.

Notes: A versatile remotely controlled fast reciprocating Langmuir probe has been developed for the TJ-II stellarator. The main components of the system are a removable head, containing the measurement tips, and a displacement system that enables the probe to be displaced in vacuum. The probe displacement system has two different components: a slow one (course length≤0.8 m) to set the probe at the initial measurement position, and a fast one (run length=0.1 m) to obtain the desired measurements within an adjustable time interval during the plasma discharge. The radial movement of the probe is controlled remotely by means of a programmable logical control system, with a radial resolution of better than 1 mm. The fast displacement of the probe (up to 1.7 m/s) is achieved by using a pneumatic system. Its position as a function of time is monitored by means of the on-line response of a linear resistor attached to the fast displacement system. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A method for measuring the nonlinear coefficients of piezoceramic resonators with low signal excitation is presented. It consists of the intermodulation produced by two signals with variable amplitude and closely spaced in frequency at the neighborhood of the resonance, performing the measurement of the intermodulation distortion signals at frequencies near excitation. This method is highly sensitive and allows nonlinear measurements to be taken at relatively low levels, avoiding thermal effects. The module and argument of the nonlinear increase in the impedance can be determined by the analysis of these measurements. This method is compared with other previously used methods, and the advantages of the proposed method are analyzed. The described nonlinear coefficient allows us to understand and foresee the nonlinear behavior near the resonance: amplitude-frequency shift effect, decrease of mechanical quality factor Q, and the jump phenomenon observed in frequency sweeps. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Low-temperature photoluminescence spectroscopy was used to study AlxGa1−xAs intrinsic epitaxial layers in the range of aluminum content between 0.45〈x〈0.9 in the region where the band gap minimum is indirect. Nonintentionally doped samples were grown by liquid phase epitaxy very near the saturation temperature (∼800 °C). The heterostructures consisted of an AlxGa1−xAs layer grown on top of a GaAs Si-doped (n∼2×1018 cm−3) substrate with orientation (100) 2° toward the (110). There is little information on the zero phonon excitonic lines for Al compositions x(approximately-greater-than)0.6, because the appearance of these lines depends on several factors such as internal strength, crystalline defects, and impurities. In our samples the excitonic lines were observable up to x=0.9. Transitions related to bound-to-free carrier as well as their phonon replicas were observable too. The data obtained from the spectra fitted with multigaussian lines allowed us to estimate the dependencies on the Al composition, x, of the bound exciton peak, the bound exciton binding energy, and the exciton localization energy. The acceptor ionization energy attributed to carbon residual impurities in As sites and its dependence on x was also obtained. Fitting by Gaussian lines the phonon region, the PL spectra fitted better with the TO(X) AlAs-type branch rather than the LO(X) AlAs-type, with a linear dependence with x in the studied range. The phonon energies of the GaAs type seem to behave almost constant and it was difficult to assign them to the LO(X) GaAs type or to TO(X) GaAs type due to the scatter of the data for high values of x. Other phonon replicas from the bound exciton and the electron-to-acceptor carbon transition (e-A°) coincide with the LO(X) AlAs type and TA(X), TA(X)+LA(X) and two LA(X) phonon energies. All the dependencies we present here are valid for aluminum compositions in the range 0.48〈x〈0.90. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Gold particles embedded in a polymer are studied using high resolution electron microscopy, nanodiffraction, and image processing. These particles have interesting properties such as nonlinear optical susceptibility. It is found that most of the nanoparticles are single crystals, and twins and planar defects are scarcely observed. On the other hand, it is found that nanoparticles do not show smooth facets but they are instead very rough. The effects of this extended roughness in the optical properties are discussed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Highly piezoelectric films of poly (α-isobutyl-L-aspartate) have been prepared from a solution in chloroform which was allowed to evaporate in a 2600-V/cm electric field, with the field direction parallel to the casting surface. The resulting oriented film has a macroscopic symmetry ∞2 (D∞), as revealed by x-ray diffraction, with a C∞ axis along the direction of the applied electric field. The shear piezoelectric constant d14 has a value of 11.2 pC/N measured at a frequency of 4 Hz.

Notes: Abstract— The objective of this paper is to report fatigue crack growth and closure behavior for corner cracked holes. An optical interference technique is employed with transparent polymer specimens to determine the three-dimensional crack surface displacement field. The local crack closure behavior is examined along the crack front under remote tension and pure bending conditions. It was observed that the crack opening loads along the hole and the free surface were significantly higher than the opening values at interior crack locations.
