    Description: This study focused on the assessment of Terminalia suparba (bark, leave and root) based diet to improve the ovulation of Clarias gariepinus brood stocks. Ten female and ten male brood stocks were obtained from a reputable fishfarm in Ogun State, Nigeria and were fed with the diets for four weeks before the breeding exercise. The latency period observed in treatments 1 to 4 was 4hours 30minutes while the ovulation period in treatment 5 was 8 hours. There was no significant different (P〉0.05) among the means. The brood stocks in Treatment 2 (Root) has the highest fecundity count (2001) while those in Treatment 5 (control) has the least fecundity count (1496). The phytochemical analysis of the plant materials showed the presence of Alkaloids, Tannin, Phenol, Glycoside, Flavonoids, Steroids, Phlobatannin, Saponin, Anthraquinones. The physical and chemical parameters of water observed showed that dissolved oxygen value ranges from 3.28 -4.60, pH 6.5 - 8.5, temperature 28.0 - 28.8 and conductivity 8.9 - 9.20. It is therefore concluded that the inclusion of Terminalia suparba in the feed of Clarias gariepinus broodstock will not only improve ovulation but also reduce the latency period.

    Description: An investigation of the socio-economic potential of the inhabitants living around Oyan lake (40km2 surface area) was carried out between January 2001 and August 2002. Five hundred (500) copies of the questionnaires were distributed among the people living around the entire stretch of the lake and 283 people responded. The commercial fish landing estimates showed that the total landing for the entire period of study was 4,628 (number) weighing 1,856.6kg. Mean catch per boat per sampling day (number and weight) was estimated to be 113 and 4.28kg respectively. Therefore the estimated annual fish landing (number and weight) per boat from 317 fishing days were 35,821 and 1,356.7kg respectively. The potential annual fish yield from commercial fishery for the lake was 147.5 tonnes while the total number of active boats recorded for the entire lake was 43,241.

    Description: The suitability of Oyan Lake (South West Nigeria) as a tourist centre was investigated between January 2001 and August 2002. The natural resources around the lake area were highlighted and their potentiality for ecotourism were noted. The trend of tourists to the lake for the past years was highlighted. The highest number of tourists was observed during the year 1995 while the lowest number was recorded in 2003. A total of 293 Industrial Attachment students from the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, within a ten-year period have visited the lake while an additional 811 students visited the lake on field trips only between 1994 and 2006. A total of four different nationalities were recorded as visitors. 87.5 percent of these were citizens of Nigeria while 12.5 percent were international tourists. Infrastructural development needed to be put in place to enhance the visit of tourists to this lake have been recommended. Conservation of flora, fauna and cultural resources were suggested so as to enhance foreign exchange earnings. The relationship between climatic, faunal, floral, biodiversity, human and political environment for effective and productive tourism and national development were highlighted.

    Description: Tilapia once termed "poor man's" fish, still remains as the highly-priced food fish in many developing countries. The good attributes of this fish prompt its use in intensive aquaculture vertically integrated systems (VIS) which embrace broodstock development, hatchery/nursery and growout phase. Based on the series of studies carried out at Kainji Lake Research Institute, in New Bussa, Nigeria using Oreochromis (Tilapia niloticus) in floating bamboo hapas/cages, the recommended intensive modular systems were estimated to be capable of producing 4 million Tilapia fingerlings and 729 tons fish (Market-size) annually. Cost-benefit analysis showed the venture to have high prospects. It is recommended that priority be given to Tilapia cage culture at the national level in order to contribute immensely towards increased fish production

    Description: The utilization of waste waters in aquaculture were briefly reviewed. At the National Institute for Freshwater Fisheries Research (NIFFR), stocking density (20 to 160 fish/m super(3)) experiments using Sarotherodon galilaeus (without supplementary feeding) in floating cages were carried out in a sewage pond (0.4ha surface area). Cage culture of S. galilaeus was observed to have potentials in waste waters aquaculture. Recommendations were made on the execution of an intergrated waste water management and utilization.

    Description: The inadequate supply of tilapia seed is considered as one of the major present constraints to the development of the culture industry in Nigeria. The floating bamboo net-hapa hatchery/nursery system was observed to be very efficient in the mass production of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fry and fingerlings at Kainji Lake Research Institute. This system was therefore, recommended for small-scale (artisanal) commercial operators consisting of fishermen families in order to increase their productivity and hasten development of rural communities. The economic analysis of this system showed that loan obtained for the recommended scale of operation can be amortized within 2 years of the project. It was emphasized that the operational and managerial skills of the fish farm operators account largely to the production cost and profitability of the enterprise
