Notes: : The spatial distribution of suspended particulatematter (SPM) was estimated in Mayagüez Bay on the west coast of Puerto Rico by using traditional ship board measurements and remotely sensed data acquired over four days during January 1990. This effort was part of a joint project between NASA and the University of Puerto Rico to develop techniques to monitor the water quality of a Caribbean coastal zone. This paper presents the methods and algorithms developed to map and analyze short term changes in the source and spatial distribution of SPM in Mayagüez Bay by using remotely sensed data acquired by the Calibrated Airborne Multispectral Scanner (CAMS). A PC-based data acquisition system was developed to record continuous ship measurements of select in- water variables. Spectral reflectances derived from CAMS red and near-IR data were corrected for atmospheric effects and then used to generate maps of SPM. These maps displayed SPM plumes associated with the mouths of the bay's three river systems. Significant day-to-day differences in the spatial characteristics were observed, suggesting that changes in river discharge occurred. However, an analysis of estimated river discharge, sediment yield, local wind field, and thermal river plume indicates that observed sediment plumes result primarily from wind-driven resuspension events.

Notes: Abstract The oxidation behavior in air at 973 K of theaustenitic stainless steels 18Cr8Ni and17Cr-2.5Ni-10.5Mn-2Cu-0.17N (low-nickel content), wasstudied in a thermobalance. The steels were heated fromroom temperature up to 973K at 10 K min-1, oxidizedfor 80 hr and then cooled to room temperature at 80 Kmin-1. The two steels had the same weightgains, 0.18 mg cm-2, which is equivalent tooxidation layers about 1.15 μm theoretical thickness. In both cases, thegeneral shapes of the ΔWS-1 (mgcm-2) curves vs. t (hours) were parabolic, but X-ray diffraction of the oxidized surfaces, surfaceand crosssection optical microscopy and SEM observations and EDSmicroanalysis show important differences betweenthem.

Notes: Abstract The corrosion resistance of a 12CrMoV alloy incontact with a molten mixture of (52-48)mol.%PbCl2-KCl, similar to that found inwaste incineration plants, has been studied. Thecorrosion kinetics have been analyzed using continuous-currentelectrochemical techniques and electrochemical impedancespectroscopy (EIS). Studies were performed to determinethe influence that temperature and the presence of carbon in the salt have on the corrosion rate.Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron-probemicroanalysis (EPMA) were used as additional analyticaltechniques to analyze the corrosion products in order to elucidate the corrosionmechanism.

Notes: Abstract EIS in the 100 kHz–1 mHz frequency range was applied to the study of changes in cold sealed aluminium oxide films exposed to highly wet and extremely dry atmospheres. Information about these changes was obtained from evolution of the impedance diagrams and, in particular, from film resistance and capacitance values determined from them. Results show that sealing quality, assessed from EIS, increases over months and years as ageing proceeds in a natural atmosphere. The analysis was completed with the aid of XPS and EDX techniques and standard quality control tests. Measurements show that specimens aged very rapidly in wet atmospheres, so that they passed all sealing quality tests within 72h. The sealing quality improves with ageing even in highly dry atmospheres despite the fact that pores lose part of their initial filling water. XPS analysis revealed that fluorine and nickel concentrate in the outer layers of cold sealed anodic films; on the other hand, films obtained by the traditional HTS procedure exhibit a uniform composition throughout their thickness.

Notes: Abstract An equivalent circuit (EC) that reproduces the a.c. impedance of porous aluminium oxide films in a highly approximate manner is proposed. The results reveal that electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is a powerful tool for obtaining detailed information on the electrochemical properties of both the porous and barrier layer on which the corrosion resistance of aluminium depends. The impedance at a given frequency can be used for accurate calculation of the electrochemical parameter for the oxide film represented by each element of the EC. In this way, the effects of any factor on sealing and ageing of anodized aluminium oxide films can be precisely analysed. The EIS technique provides an effective, advantageous alternative to existing seal quality control tests.

Notes: Laboratory weight loss and cyclic potentiodynamic polarization corrosion tests were performed on two types of corrosion resistant alloys, a duplex alloy (ferritic-austenitic stainless steel) and two austenitic stainless steels, in mixtures of chloride (3000, 9000 and 15000 ppm) and fluoride (4800 and 15000 ppm) ions at pH 3. Two temperatures were tested, 60 and 70°C. The electrochemical results indicate that the duplex stainless steel presents high corrosion resistance. Weight loss results show low corrosion rates of the two types of stainless steels after 60 days exposure. Sonic pits-crevices were found under the corrosion crust deposits on the duplex stainless steel.
