    Description: Over a period of a year, a study was carried out to determine the morphology of the Genus Hydrocynus which comprises of carnivorous fishes known as Tiger fishes. Determination of the morphology was carried out using both quantitative (morphometric and meristic) characteristics and qualitative characters such as colour and shape of the fish. It was discovered that some of the species that were available in large numbers in the lake in past years have decreased in number. The paper looks into the possible reasons for the reduction of these commercially important species.

    Description: This paper reviews accounts of social and economic features of HIV/AIDS epidemics in the fisheries sector focussing on Africa with particular reference to Nigeria. Fishing communities are often among the highest-risk group, with high overall rates of HIV/ AIDS prevalence. It is more important to use the information made available from these efforts in more effective way of targeting the appropriate interventions and measures that can be designed and instituted. This information could also serve useful purposes and the efficient mobilization of needed resources from all possible sources in order to achieve the Millennium Development Goals in the Fisheries sector in Nigeria.

    Description: Microfinance refers to loans, savings, insurance, transfer services and other financial products targeted at low-income people. Artisanal fishing is a crucial source of livelihoods in developing nations, particularly for low-income families in rural areas where job options are limited. Nigeria depends heavily on revenues from natural resources, especially oil hence income from fishing is particularly important to Nigeria. Aquaculture is also being practiced with a growth rate that has increased over the years. Sources of funding for the operators of these sectors of the economy who are mostly poor peasants will ensure sustainable production and income generation. Informal microfinance groups have existed before the advent of formal microfinance. Microfinance institutions in Nigeria operate in an environment that is dominated by commercial banks. However, their high deposit rate makes them attractive to the low income group. This paper examines the emergence of microfinance institutions, their contributions to fisheries and aquaculture and constraints to be overcome to enable them serve the fisheries and aquaculture sector better.

    Description: In the study and understanding of fish biology, characterization and morphology, the length-weight relationship is of great importance. The genus Hydrocynus, is of high economic importance to the fisheries of Lake Kainji. This study investigated their length-weight relationship to establish the growth pattern of species within this genus. The ‘b’ values of the length-weight relationship for these species are less than 3. There was negative allometric growth (b〈3) for all samples of the Hydrocynus species. The correlation coefficients (r) are 0.9713 and 0.9888, for Hydrocynus forskali and H.brevis respectively. Condition factors ranged from 1.313 for H. forskali to 1.431 for H. brevis.

    Description: The survey of the fish fauna in Lake Kainji, Niger State and Kebbi state was carried out for a period of three months from August to October 2003 using fishermen’s catches. Forty two species of fish were identified and these were from the families Osteoglossidae, Gymnarchidae, Mormyridae, Characidae, Citharinidae, Distichodontidae, Cyprinidae Bagridae, Schilbeidae, Clariidae, Malapteruridae, Mochokidae, Channidae, Centropomidae, Cichlidae and Clupeidae. In terms of relative abundance, the family Bagridae has the highest species diversity of 20%, while Osteoglossidae, Citharinidae, Malapteruridae, Mochokidae, Centropomidae and Gymnarcidae had lowest species diversity of 2.5%.The study provides a biogenic history of fish species diversity within this period of the year in the last two decades. The significance of the study is to provide information towards a sustainable exploitation strategy in the community based management of the fisheries of the lake.

    Description: This paper reviews fisheries as an important economic sector in terms of employment, food security, enterprise development, and foreign exchange earning. The fisheries sub sector of agriculture if developed will enhance employment opportunities for rural fisher folks vis a vis the harnessing of less culturable surface area for aquaculture purpose, also homestead pond if fully encouraged and utilized has potential for increasing the fish yield of the nation. The role of women in the artisanal fisheries sub sector was x-rayed as an area to be encouraged, as it has the potential of eradicating poverty from the grass root. The importance of fisheries development in sustainable livelihood and poverty alleviation is highlighted in this paper

    Description: The attributes of responsible fisheries in enhancing Poverty Alleviation of fishing Communities of Lake Kainji were appraised. After impoundment in 1968, the catch per unit effort of fish continued on a downward trend, which suggested a decline in the fish population as a result of improper fishing methods such as the use of small mesh size nets, fish poisoning, destructive fishing gears like beach seine nets. The Nigerian-German (GTZ) Kainji Lake Fisheries Promotion Project intervention brought an increase in yields for the lake in 1996. The estimated annual yield was put at 38.244 metric tones in 1996, an increase of 18 % from the yield recorded in 1995 due to improvement in fishing and conservation methods. The result of catch assessment study carried out in 2003 as a follow up to GTZ intervention is presented. This reveals 15 family and 40 species of fish recorded. Which shows that Lake Kainji still has very high diversity and abundance of fish species. The paper suggests ways to encourage fishing communities to adopt new innovation or strategies by the government and non-governmental organization, which will go a long way in alleviation poverty among the fisher folks
