    Notes: Abstract The effect of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) elastomer on the melting point and the percentage crystallinity of polyacetal (POM) is studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) scans of POM, TPU and their blends have been taken and the results indicate that the crystalline structure of POM remains unaffected even after the addition of amorphous TPU. The influence of defects like holes and notches on the ultimate tensile strength has been examined. The resistance to crack initiation (J c), the resistance to steady state crack propagation (R p) and the resistance to crack growth at maximum load (R max) are estimated. The POM/TPU blends display higher crack resistance values than pure POM. The hysteresis energy of blends is determined and is found to increase with TPU content.

    Notes: Abstract Physical blends of polycarbonate (PC) and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer (ABS) at two different weight fractions were made (PC35/ABS65 and P75/ABS25). Reactive blended similar compositions of PC with maleic anhydride grafted ABS (MABS) were also made at the same compositions. The crack resistance behaviour of these two types of blends and feedstocks (PC and ABS) were studied. The generalized locus method was used to investigate the invariance of crack resistance from any set of characteristic points. PC and PC/ABS blends failed immediately after crack initiation. The modified blends (PC/MABS) exhibited failure through crack propagation after crack initiation started. The resistance to crack initiation is determined in terms of critical J-integral value (Jc). The resistance to crack propagation at maximum load point is also determined from the locus of maximum load point on the load-displacement curves. The resistance to steady state crack growth (Rp) during extensive crack propagation is determined from the total essential energy for a complete fracture. The crack resistance values for modified blends are much high compared to unmodified blends and even feedstocks.

    Notes: This study describes an attempt to improve the impact resistance of polyacetal (POM)/ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM) blends by means of compatibilization and dynamic vulcanization. A commerical copolymer, poly(acrylic acid)-grafted polypropylene (PGP), has been used as a compatibilizer to control the phase morphology of the blend system. Dicumyl peroxide is used to dynamically vulcanize the EPDM elastomer in the blend. At temperatures higher than 185°C, the compatibilizer decreases the viscosity of compatibilized and dynamically vulcanized (cdv) POM/EPDM blends. Impact strength of the cdv blend system increases considerably with a marginal decrease in tensile yield stress and heat deflection temperature as the PGP content increases. The significant increase in impact strength seems to be due to the role of PGP as a linking agent for the binary blends rather than as a third component. Though dynamic mechanical studies do not indicate any compatibility in cdv-POM/EPDM blends, scanning electron microscopy reveals the strong interpenetrating interphase in the compatibilized blend system. Dynamic vulcanization raises elastic recovery and tensile modulus of the blends. Hysteresis energies of the blends increase consistently with the addition of PGP. The crystalline structure of POM is not affected by compatibilization and vulcanization. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: The yield stress of polyacetal (POM) decreases monotonically with the incorporation of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) elastomer in POM/TPU blends as would be anticipated. However, the impact strength of the resultant POM/TPU blends increases initially up to 30% TPU and thereafter decreases with the addition of TPU. Stress relaxation measurements in simple extension were carried out for POM and its blends with 10, 20, and 30% TPU at a constant temperature (30°C). Rate of loss of the relaxation modulus was found to be a nonlinear function of time. It has been demonstrated that the stress relaxation modulus values measured at different strains can be superimposed by a shift along the logarithmic time axis to yield master curves of modulus over an extended time period. It has also been found that while it is possible to determine, at any strain, relaxation curves covering an appreciable time range, the demarcation of linear and nonlinear behavior ranges of stress could not be done for these materials as all the strain values chosen in our experiments were in the region of linear behavior. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Data have been obtained on the operation of a deep-channel single-screw extruder, pumping a Newtonian liquid under isothermal, developed flow conditions. Flow rate, screw speed, and pressure gradient characteristics were measured, and a tracer particle technique was employed to determine channel velocity profiles. The data were required for the testing and development of a computer model for flow in the extruder, which takes into consideration channel curvature. Results confirm the correctness of the computer solutions previously reported.

    Notes: The effect of blend ratio and compatibilization on dynamic mechanical properties of PP/NBR blends was investigated at different temperatures. The storage modulus of the blend decreased with increase in rubber content and shows two Tg's indicating the incompatibility of the system. Various composite models have been used to predict the experimental viscoelastic data. The Takayanagi model fit well with the experimental values. The addition of phenolic modified polypropylene (Ph-PP) and maleic modified polypropylene (MA-PP) improved the storage modulus of the blend at lower temperatures. The enhancement in storage modulus was correlated with the change in domain size of dispersed NBR particles. The effect of dynamic vulcanization using sulfur, peroxide, and mixed system on viscoelastic behavior was also studied.
